IRS Underreporting Issue: Can't Get Through, Need Advice ASAP!
Hey everyone, I'm dealing with an underreporting issue with the IRS and it's been a real headache. I've been trying to get through to them for days now but no luck. Anyone else in the same boat or have any advice on how to handle this? I'm starting to get worried about potential penalties or audits. Any tips on how to explain the situation to them once I finally get through?

Ugh, I feel your pain. I had a similar issue last year and it took FOREVER to get it sorted. Have you tried calling right when they open? That seemed to work for me eventually.

Thanks for the tip! I've tried a few times but no luck yet. What time did you call?

I think I got through around 7:05 AM their time. It's a pain to wake up that early but it beats waiting on hold all day!

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

20 bucks? Idk man, seems kinda steep for a phone call.

I get the skepticism, but it honestly saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imho.

How long did it take for them to actually connect you?

It took about 2 hours, but I just went about my day and they called me when an agent was on the line. Way better than being stuck on hold myself!

Listen up, cause I've been down this road before and I've got some advice that might help you out. First things first, gather ALL your documents. I'm talking W-2s, 1099s, receipts, everything. The more prepared you are, the smoother it'll go. Next, when you finally get through to someone, be polite but firm. Explain your situation clearly and ask for a specific timeline for resolution. Don't let them give you the runaround. If you're worried about penalties, ask about the First Time Abatement policy. If you've got a clean record, they might waive penalties. Lastly, consider getting a tax advocate if things get too complicated. They can be a lifesaver in dealing with the IRS. Good luck, and remember: stay calm, be prepared, and don't give up!

Wow, thank you so much for this detailed advice! I'll definitely start gathering all my documents ASAP. Have you ever used a tax advocate yourself?

Yep, I used one a few years back when I had a complex situation with some overseas income. They were super helpful in navigating the system and getting everything sorted out.

Have you tried reaching out to your local congressperson's office? Sometimes they can help expedite things with the IRS.

Underreporting issues can be tricky. Make sure you're keeping detailed records of all your attempts to contact them. It might help your case if you can show you've been proactive about resolving the issue.

That's a great idea, I'll start doing that. Do you think keeping a log of phone calls would be enough, or should I be doing more?

Phone logs are good, but also save any correspondence (emails, letters) and take notes during your calls if possible. The more detail, the better!

Has anyone tried using the IRS's online tools for this kind of thing? I've heard mixed things about their effectiveness.

I tried once. It was about as useful as a chocolate teapot 🍫☕

Actually, I had some success with their online payment agreement tool. But for anything more complicated, you're probably better off talking to a human.

Just a heads up, if you do get through, make sure to get the name and badge number of whoever you talk to. It can be helpful if you need to follow up later.

Anyone else feel like they need a degree in tax law just to file their taxes correctly? 🎓💼 This stuff is way too complicated for the average person imho

Seriously! I miss the days when you could just fill out a simple 1040EZ and be done with it.
