4-month delay on 2023 IRS tax refund due to identity verification - need advice for calling agent

Hey everyone, I'm dealing with a frustrating situation with my 2023 tax refund. It's been about 4 months since I got a notice from the IRS about some identity verification or missing documents. I've been waiting all this time and still haven't received my refund. Has anyone else experienced such a long delay? Any advice on what I should do or say when I finally get through to an agent?

Ugh, I feel your pain! I went through something similar last year. Have you tried checking the "Where's My Refund" tool on the IRS website? Sometimes that gives more info than what they tell you on the phone.

Yeah, I've been checking that tool almost daily. It just says my refund is still being processed. So frustrating! 😤

Pro tip: don't check it more than once a day. The IRS only updates it once every 24 hours, usually overnight.

Oh, I didn't know that. Thanks for the tip! I'll try to resist the urge to check it constantly lol

4 months is way too long! When you talk to an agent, make sure to emphasize how long its been since you got the notice. Ask them for a specific timeline and what exactly they need from you to move things along. Don't let them give you vague answers!

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Jc9x-gysK0

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit? Anyone else tried it?

Yep, it's legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo.

Wait, we have to PAY to talk to the IRS now? This country is going to hell in a handbasket 🤦‍♂️

I get the frustration, but think of it this way - how much is your time worth? For me, not sitting on hold for 3 hours was definitely worth $20.

Here's what you need to do: 1. Gather all your documents related to the notice you received. 2. Call the IRS early in the morning, right when they open. You're more likely to get through. 3. Be polite but firm. Explain that it's been 4 months since the notice and you need a resolution. 4. Ask for a specific timeline for when your refund will be processed. 5. Get the agent's name and ID number for your records. 6. If they can't help, ask to speak to a supervisor. 7. If all else fails, contact your local Taxpayer Advocate Service. They can often help when normal channels aren't working. Remember, persistence is key. Don't give up! Good luck!

This is solid advice. I'd add: keep a log of every call you make, including date, time, and what was discussed. It can help if you need to escalate later.

have u tried faxing them? I know it sounds old school but I've heard it can sometimes get faster results than calling or mailing

Faxing? What year is it, 1995? 😂 But seriously, I'll give it a shot if nothing else works. Thanks for the suggestion!

This is why I always tell people to adjust their W-4 so they don't get a big refund. It's YOUR money, don't give the government an interest-free loan!

Preach! 🙌 I learned this the hard way too. Now I aim for owing a small amount each year instead of getting a refund.

easier said than done for some of us. Some deductions are hard to predict year to year
