IRS Refund Delayed: How to Handle a Referral on Your Tax Account?
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle with my tax refund. I filed my taxes a while back and was expecting my refund, but now I've found out there's some kind of referral on my account. I'm not really sure what that means or why it happened. Has anyone else dealt with this before? I'm trying to figure out what steps I need to take next and if I need to provide any additional information. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Have you checked the "Where's My Refund" tool on the IRS website? Sometimes that can give you more info than you'd expect.

I did, but it just says "Your refund is being processed." Not very helpful 😕

Ah, classic IRS. Clear as mud, as always. Hang in there!

The tool isn't always updated in real-time, but it's still worth checking periodically in case there are any changes.

Update: Finally got through to someone at the IRS! Turns out there was a discrepancy between my reported income and what my employer submitted. Gotta get that sorted out now. Thanks everyone for your advice and support!

Pro tip: always double-check your W-2 against your last paystub of the year. Catches errors like this before they become problems!

Hey guys, I found a method to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit? Anyone else tried it?

Yep, 100% legit. I was skeptical too, but it saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo.

$20 just to talk to someone? That's ridiculous. The system is so broken 😡

I get it, but think about how much your time is worth. For me, not sitting on hold for 3 hours was totally worth it.

Claimyr is a useful tool but consider the fact that some people might not find the cost justified, especially if finances are tight.

It might be worth getting in touch with the Taxpayer Advocate Service; they can be helpful in expediting cases like yours.

Plot twist: what if the IRS is just a front for a massive game of keep-away with our money? 🤔💸

Haha, it definitely feels that way sometimes. But seriously, the IRS isn't out to get us; it's just a slow system.

If you're considering using Claimyr or similar services, look at the reviews and weigh the cost against your time and frustration levels. Some find it invaluable, while others might prefer traditional methods.

Just a heads up, if your refund is delayed for more than 45 days after the due date (or the date you filed, if later), you might be entitled to interest on your refund. Silver lining, I guess? 🤷♂️

It's not much, but getting some interest is better than nothing if you have to wait that long.

I've been thru this before. Here's what you need to do: 1. Don't panic! A referral doesn't always mean bad news. 2. Call the IRS asap. Use the number on your last notice. 3. Have your tax return and any related docs ready when you call. 4. Ask specifically why your return was referred and what they need from you. 5. Take notes during the call - names, dates, and next steps. 6. If they request additional docs, send them ASAP via certified mail. 7. Follow up if you don't hear back within their stated timeframe. Remember, patience is key. The IRS is slow, but they'll get to your case eventually. Good luck!

It can vary wildly, unfortunately. Could be a few weeks, could be a few months. Just keep on top of it and don't be afraid to follow up regularly!

Ugh, I feel your pain. I had a similar issue last year. A referral usually means they need to review your return more closely. Could be for a number of reasons - did you claim any unusual deductions or credits?

Natalie Wang
Not that I know of? I mean, I did the usual stuff like mortgage interest and charitable donations, but nothing out of the ordinary. Should I be worried?

Nah, don't stress too much. It's probably just a random check. Best thing to do is call the IRS and ask for more details. Be prepared to wait on hold for ages tho 🙄

In my experience, most of them are overpriced and don't do anything you couldn't do yourself with a little research. Save your money!
