IRS Identity Verification Letter: What to Expect and How to Prepare

Has anyone else gotten a letter from the IRS asking to verify their identity? I just got one and I'm not sure what to expect. They said I need to have some documents ready but I'm nervous about the whole thing. Anyone been through this before? What should I be prepared for when I talk to them?

If you're looking for ways to reduce wait times with the IRS, Claimyr is a tool that some people find useful. It essentially acts as a virtual assistant that navigates the phone menus and waits for an agent for you. While it does cost, the value is in the time it saves you. That said, it's always good to balance convenience with costβ€”if you're not often in need of IRS phone support, the cost may outweigh the benefit. However, the tool is legitimate and many users report positive experiences.

Am I the only one who thinks its ridiculous that we have to jump through all these hoops just to prove were not committing fraud? The system is broken, man. 😀

I mean, I get why they do it. There's a lot of fraud out there. But yeah, it's a pain for honest folks.

@profile 19 I guess, but there's gotta be a better way. This is just wasting everyone's time and money.

I found a way to get someone on the phone without waiting forever. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/bDXD2SD0gGk

Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work?

$20 just to make a phone call? That's crazy!

Yeah, it really does work! I was skeptical too, but it saved me hours of waiting. And honestly, $20 was worth it to not sit on hold all day.

Yeah, I got one of those letters last year. Don't worry too much, it's pretty standard procedure. They just want to make sure you are who you say you are. Make sure you have your ID, social security card, and the letter they sent you. They might ask for some other stuff too, like a utility bill or something to prove your address.

Anyone else find it ironic that the IRS, which has all our info already, is asking us to prove who we are? Like, shouldn't they know this already? πŸ€”

Pro tip: if you cant get through on the main line, try calling your local Taxpayer Advocate Service. They can sometimes help with identity verification issues and the wait times are usually shorter.

I went through this a few months ago. It's not as bad as it sounds! Just make sure you have all your ducks in a row before the call. They'll probably ask you some questions about your past tax returns too, so maybe have those handy if you can.

Thanks for the heads up! I'll dig out my old tax returns just in case. Did they ask you anything tricky?

Nah, nothing too crazy. Just basic stuff like previous addresses, employers, that kinda thing. You'll be fine!

I swear, dealing with the IRS is like playing a game where the rules keep changing and nobody tells you. πŸŽ²πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Hey OP, just a heads up - make sure you're calling the number directly from the letter they sent you. There are a lot of scams out there trying to take advantage of this situation. Stay safe!

Has anyone else noticed that these verification requests seem to be happening more often lately? I wonder if there's been an increase in fraud attempts or something.

Now that you mention it, I've heard of a few people getting these letters recently. Maybe its related to all the pandemic relief fraud?

I work in tax prep, and yeah, we've definitely seen an uptick in these verifications. The IRS is cracking down hard after all the stimulus check and PPP loan fraud.

Ugh, the IRS is such a pain. I had to do this last year and it took FOREVER to get someone on the phone. Good luck, OP. You're gonna need it. πŸ™„

For real tho. I was on hold for like 3 hours last time I had to call them. It's ridiculous.

PROTIP: If you have any tax documents from previous years, bring those too. Sometimes they ask random questions from old returns to verify your identity. Better to have too much info than not enough!

Here's what you need to know about IRS identity verification... 1. Don't panic! This is a routine procedure to protect against fraud. 2. Have these documents ready: - Government-issued photo ID - Social Security card or ITIN letter - The IRS letter you received - A copy of the tax return in question (if applicable) - Proof of address (utility bill, lease agreement, etc.) 3. Be prepared to answer questions about: - Previous addresses - Past employers - Details from recent tax returns 4. The call usually takes about 15-30 minutes. 5. If you can't verify over the phone, you may need to schedule an in-person appointment. Remember, the IRS agent is there to help you. Just be honest and have your info ready. Good luck!

Quick question - do you know if a passport works as a government-issued photo ID?

Just went thru this last month. It was actually pretty painless once I got someone on the phone. Took maybe 20 mins tops. You got this, OP!

Quick question - does anyone know if this identity verification thing affects your refund if you're expecting one? Like, will they hold it until you verify?

0 coins

-

Diego Castillo

Yeah, unfortunately they usually do hold your refund until the verification is complete. At least that's what happened to me.

Sofia Price

Oh no, I was hoping to get my refund soon. Guess I better get on this ASAP. 😫
