IRS Verification Notice: What to Expect and How to Prepare?

Hey everyone, I just got a notice from the IRS saying they need to verify my information. Has anyone gone through this process before? What should I expect? I'm a bit nervous about it and could use some advice.

I went through this last year. Don't worry too much, it's pretty standard. They'll probably ask for some additional documents to confirm your identity or income. Just make sure you respond promptly and provide everything they ask for.

Thanks for the reassurance! Do you remember what kind of documents they asked for? I want to be prepared.

For me, they wanted copies of my W-2s, a recent utility bill, and my driver's license. But it might be different for you depending on what they're verifying.

Sometimes they also ask for bank statements or 1099 forms if you have any freelance income. Just a heads up!

Ugh, the IRS is such a pain šŸ™„ I had to go thru this too and it took FOREVER. Good luck dealing with their bureaucracy!

Don't stress too much, OP. It's annoying but not the end of the world. Just make sure you keep copies of everything you send them and consider sending it via certified mail so you have proof of when you responded.

That's a great tip about certified mail, thanks! I'll definitely do that.

I found a method to get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

I was skeptical at first too, but I tried it and it actually worked. Saved me hours of hold time.

20 bucks tho? Idk if its worth it...

For me, it was totally worth it. Time is money, and I didn't want to waste a whole day on hold.

Just went thru this myself. Here's what you need to know: ā€¢ Respond ASAP. They give you a deadline, don't miss it. ā€¢ Gather all your tax docs from the year they're verifying ā€¢ They might ask for ID proof (driver's license, passport) ā€¢ If you filed jointly, your spouse might need to provide info too ā€¢ Double check everything before sending ā€¢ Keep copies of EVERYTHING you send ā€¢ If you can, use a trackable mailing method It's a hassle, but not the end of the world. Stay organized and you'll be fine!

It's to prevent fraud. But yeah, it can feel pretty frustrating.

Quick question - did they send you a specific form number or letter? Might help to know which exact verification process you're going through.

Good point! I'll have to double check when I get home. I remember it was a pretty official looking letter, but I don't recall the specific form number.

Pro tip: if you need to call them, do it first thing in the morning when they open. WAY shorter wait times. Also, be super nice to the agent, theyre usually trying their best to help.
