IRS Identity Verification Process - What to Expect and Tips?

Hey everyone, I'm in the process of verifying my identity with the IRS. Has anyone gone through this recently? I'm wondering if I should expect any specific notices or letters from them. Any tips or experiences would be really helpful!

I found a way to solve IRS identity verification delays, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Wx55aUy-og

Ugh, been there done that. It's such a pain in the butt. I had to verify my identity last year and it took FOREVER. Make sure you have all your documents ready - they'll probably ask for your social security card, driver's license, and maybe even a utility bill. Good luck!

How long did it take for you? I've been waiting for like 2 months now 😩

It took me about 3 months from start to finish. The waiting is the worst part!

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/bDXD2SD0gGk

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

I was skeptical at first too, but it really worked for me. Saved me hours of hold time.

Pro tip: If you haven't already, create an account on the IRS website. Sometimes they'll send notices there instead of snail mail. Also, check your spam folder regularly - I almost missed an important letter cuz it went straight to spam 🤦‍♀️

I went thru this last month. They sent me a letter asking for additional info. Make sure u respond ASAP cuz they give u a deadline. If u miss it, u gotta start all over again 😫

Oh no, that sounds stressful. Do you remember how long they gave you to respond?

I think it was like 30 days? But don't quote me on that. Just keep an eye out for any mail from them and act fast!

Here's a comprehensive guide to the IRS identity verification process: 1. Initial Contact: The IRS will typically send you a 5071C, 5747C, or 5447C letter if they need to verify your identity. 2. Online Verification: You can often complete the process online through the Identity Verification Service at https://idverify.irs.gov/ 3. Phone Verification: If online isn't an option, you'll need to call the toll-free number provided in your letter. 4. Required Documents: Have ready your prior year tax return, your current year tax return (if you've filed), and the letter you received. 5. Additional Info: They may ask for your name, DOB, SSN, filing status, and mailing address from your most recent tax return. 6. Processing Time: After verification, it typically takes 9 weeks to process your return if no other issues are found. Remember, the IRS will NEVER initiate contact through email, text, or social media to request personal or financial information. Stay vigilant against scams! Hope this helps, OP! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Has anyone tried using a tax advocate service? I've heard they can sometimes help speed things up with the IRS.

I used one last year when I had issues with my refund. They were pretty helpful, but it still took a while. Worth a shot tho!
