IRS Identity Verification Process - What to Expect and Tips?
Hey everyone, I just got my letter from the IRS and now I need to verify my identity. Has anyone gone through this process recently? What should I expect? Any tips or advice would be really appreciated!

Ugh, I went through this last month. It's a pain in the butt, but not impossible. You'll need to gather a bunch of documents like your ID, social security card, and some tax forms. Then you'll have to either do a video call or go to an IRS office in person. Good luck!

Video call? Is that new? When I did it last year, I had to mail in copies of everything 🙄

Yeah, they started offering video calls during covid. It's way faster than mailing stuff in!

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/bDXD2SD0gGk

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

I know it sounds sketchy, but I swear it worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imho

Can you give more details about how it works? Do they just keep calling until they get through?

Basically, yeah. They have some kind of automated system that navigates the phone tree and waits on hold. When a real person picks up, it calls your phone. Pretty slick tbh

Pro tip: make sure you have a STRONG internet connection for the video call. Mine kept freezing and I had to reschedule 🤦♂️

Anyone else feel like this whole process is just designed to make us give up? It's like they don't want us to get our refunds or something 🤔

Here's a comprehensive guide to verifying your identity with the IRS: 1. Gather required documents: - Government-issued photo ID - Social Security card or ITIN letter - Proof of address (utility bill, lease, etc.) - Prior year tax returns (if available) 2. Choose verification method: - Online: Use ID.me (faster but requires smartphone) - In-person: Schedule appointment at local IRS office - Video call: Available in some areas - Mail: Slowest option, last resort 3. Follow IRS instructions carefully 4. Be patient! Processing can take 2-6 weeks Remember: Never give personal info to unsolicited calls/emails claiming to be IRS. They'll always contact you by mail first. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.

Wow, thank you so much for this detailed breakdown! This is super helpful. Quick question - for the video call, do I need to have physical copies of all these documents or can I show digital versions?

Glad it's helpful! For the video call, they usually want to see the physical documents. They might make exceptions for some digital docs, but it's safest to have the real thing on hand. Better safe than sorry!

Has anyone tried using a tax advocate service? I've heard they can sometimes help speed things up.

I used one last year when I was having issues. They were pretty helpful, but it still took a couple months to resolve everything. Worth a shot tho!

PSA: Be careful with ID.me. I've heard some privacy concerns about how they store and use your data. Might be worth looking into before you use their service.

Anyone else find it ironic that we have to jump through all these hoops to prove who we are to the same government that's been tracking us since birth? 😂
