ID Verified for 2023 Taxes - Transcript Shows DD Date but Getting Check Instead?

I finally got my ID verified for my 2023 taxes on March 25th. The IRS rep told me to wait 9 weeks for processing, but my transcripts already updated and show a direct deposit date of 4/9. Today is 4/11 and nothing has hit my bank account yet. I called the IRS again and they said my 2023 refund is actually being sent as a paper check instead of direct deposit. Should I just wait the full 9 weeks they originally told me before calling them again? I'm so confused why it changed from DD to check without any notification.

This is actually pretty common right now. The IRS systems sometimes flag accounts for additional verification, and when that happens, they default to sending paper checks instead of direct deposits - even if your transcript shows a DD date. The transcript system and the payment processing system don't always communicate perfectly. Typically, when this happens, you can expect the check within 7-10 business days after the DD date shown on your transcript. So you should see it by next week most likely.

The same thing happened to me in February! My transcript showed a DD date of 2/21, but nothing showed up in my account. Called the IRS after waiting 3 days and they told me it was being mailed as a check. Got it about 8 days after my original DD date. I was going crazy checking my bank account every hour before I called them. The most annoying part is they don't tell you when they make this switch.

I've been seeing this a lot on this sub lately. Have you checked the Where's My Refund tool? Sometimes that will update to show it's been mailed even when your transcript still shows DD.

WMR just says it's been approved and will be sent to my bank account. Hasn't updated to show it's being mailed. That's why I'm so confused!

Yeah, WMR is notoriously slow to update. I trust what the IRS rep told you on the phone more than what WMR shows. They can see the actual current status in their system.

I work with tax issues daily, and this is happening more frequently this year. The IRS has increased security measures that sometimes trigger a switch from direct deposit to paper check. Common reasons include: 1. Name/account verification issues 2. Multiple refunds to the same account 3. Random security checks 4. Bank rejecting the deposit attempt In your case, since you had to verify your ID, the system likely defaulted to a paper check as an additional security measure. The good news is that the check is almost certainly already in the mail if your transcript shows an April 9th date.

I was in a similar situation and was able to get clarity by using https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript. It explained that the codes on my transcript actually indicated a payment method change even though the DD date remained. It pointed out specific sequence codes that show when a direct deposit is converted to a check. Saved me a lot of confusion!

Does that service actually tell you anything you can't find out yourself? The IRS website explains all the codes.

The IRS site gives generic descriptions, but doesn't explain how the codes interact or what specific sequences mean for your situation. It's like having someone translate the codes into plain English and explain what's actually happening with your specific refund. Totally worth it for peace of mind.

If you need to know exactly where your check is, I'd recommend calling the IRS again. But use Claimyr.com (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to get through quickly. I wasted hours on hold before I found this service - they got me through to an agent in about 15 minutes who confirmed my check had been mailed and gave me the exact date. Saved me so much stress wondering where my money was.

This is a known issue for people who had to verify ID. The system often switches to paper checks as a security measure, but doesn't update all their systems accordingly. The check is probably already on its way to you. In my experience, paper checks typically arrive 5-14 days after the date shown on your transcript. So I'd give it until at least April 19th before calling again.

Just curious - did you have any offset conditions or did you owe any back taxes? Sometimes that can trigger a switch to paper check too.

Nope, no offsets or back taxes. Clean record as far as I know. That's why this is so weird to me.

Then it's definitely just the ID verification that triggered it. The IRS is being extra cautious this year with identity theft concerns. Your check is definitely coming!
