ID Verification Required - Transcript 'As Of' Date Keeps Changing
Need advice on my ID verification situation: • Filed: 2/1/2024, accepted same day • Current status: Waiting for ID verification letter in mail • Cannot verify over phone/in-person - IRS agents insist they need the # from my letter • Transcript status: Blank except for changing 'as of' dates - Originally 3/3/2024 - Changed to 3/10/2024 a week later - Changed to 3/17/2024 this morning - Now back to 3/3/2024 today Is this date change pattern a positive sign? I've never experienced this long delay before and I expect better service as a taxpayer. Any insights on what these date changes actually mean?

The "as of" date changes are actually pretty normal tbh. It's just the IRS comp systems doing their thing. What matters more is if you've got any actual codes showing up on the transcript. Have you checked both account and return transcripts? Sometimes ppl only look at one. Also - did you get any kinda notice about the ID verify requirement or just told by an agent? Cuz that makes a diff.

Those changing dates are like a bad game of IRS musical chairs... except nobody wins and the music never stops. 😂 But seriously, I'd be concerned about the blank transcript. Usually by now you'd see at least some processing codes. Were there any credits on your return that might've triggered extra scrutiny? Child Tax Credit? Earned Income?

I should point out that per Internal Revenue Manual 21.5.6, ID verification letters (Letter 5071C or 5747C) are typically generated when the Taxpayer Protection Program flags a return as potentially fraudulent. The system may hold processing until verification is complete, which explains the blank transcript. Average wait time for these letters is approximately 10-14 days from when the system flags the return.

I'm seeing this happen to so many people this season. When you get the letter, are you planning to verify online through ID.me or call the TPP hotline? The verification process can be stressful, and I completely understand your anxiety about this delay.

The changing "as of" dates might indicate the system is periodically checking your account for updates. This is generally a neutral sign - neither good nor bad. It simply means automated processes are running in the background. I wouldn't read too much into these specific date changes.

Did they tell you WHEN to expect the letter? I was in this exact situation on Feb 10th and still hadn't received anything by March 1st. Had to call again and they said they'd resend it! The first letter apparently got lost! You might need to follow up if it doesn't arrive this week!

I went through this exact ID verification nightmare last year. Here's what I learned: 1. These letters can take 2-3 weeks to arrive 2. Calling regular IRS lines is useless because regular agents can't help with ID verification 3. You need to reach the specific Taxpayer Protection Program agents I spent 4 days trying to get through to TPP. Finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got connected in about 15 minutes. The agent was able to confirm my letter was mailed on a specific date and gave me the verification options once it arrived. Saved me days of stress and redial attempts.

I've been through three different verification processes in the past two years (one for myself, one for my mother, one for my business). Your situation is actually better than my first experience when they didn't even tell me verification was needed - I just had a mysterious delay. Compared to audit verification, ID verification is much simpler. Once you get the letter, the process usually takes about 30 minutes online, and refunds typically process within 9-21 days after verification. Thank you all for sharing such helpful information here!

I had almost the exact same situation on February 8th this year. My "as of" date bounced between 2/26, 3/4, and back to 2/26 over a two-week period. Once I finally got my letter on March 2nd and verified, my transcript updated on March 6th with all the processing codes. I used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript - it explained every code and gave me a projected deposit date. It was spot on - refund hit my account on March 15th exactly as predicted.

The "as of" date changes are part of the IRS's weekly processing cycle. Here's what's happening: - The IRS runs major processing updates every 7 days - Your return is flagged for ID verification (TPP program) - The system checks your account every cycle (hence date changes) - The letter typically takes exactly 14-21 days to arrive - Once verified, most refunds process within 9 days If it's been more than 21 days since you were told about verification, call the TPP line at 800-830-5084 between 7am and 7pm. Average wait time is 74 minutes, but they can confirm if the letter was actually sent and when.
