ID Verification Process - Online Docs But In-Person Appointments? IRS Planning Fail

Is this the first yr of this ID verification mess? SMH. The IRS clearly didn't think this thru AT ALL. Why on earth would they let you submit all your docs online but then force you to go in person anyway? Seems like a total waste of time for everyone involved. I make enough $ that I shouldn't have to deal w/ this kind of bureaucratic nonsense. I've already provided every possible piece of documentation they could want electronically. Now I have to take time off work to physically show up at some office? In 2024? Ridiculous. Has anyone else gone thru this process? I want to know exactly what to expect bc I'm not interested in making multiple trips if they're just going to be disorganized when I get there.

The ID verification process has actually been around since January 2022, but they expanded it significantly for the 2024 filing season. I had to go through this on March 15th this year, and was surprised by how convoluted the whole thing is. The IRS claims they're trying to prevent identity theft, but their implementation creates these weird gaps where you can submit documents online but still need to verify in person.

Wait, so even if you upload all your documents correctly through their portal, you STILL have to show up in person? 😂 That's like ordering food for delivery and then being told you have to go pick it up anyway!

So confusing. Do I need an appointment? Or just show up? How long does it take?

I went through something similar, I believe, back in February. The verification process itself wasn't too bad, but the scheduling system was, perhaps, the most frustrating part. It took me approximately 3-4 weeks to even get an appointment in my area.

I went through this last month. It's a complete waste of time. The online system collects all your info but can't actually verify it properly. I found taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) really helpful for understanding what was happening with my return during this mess. It analyzed my transcript and explained exactly why I was flagged for verification and what the timeline would likely be once I completed it. Saved me hours of confusion trying to decipher the IRS notices.

How does this service actually work? The IRS systems are notoriously complex and I'm skeptical anything can really interpret their codes better than just calling them directly.

I used taxr.ai after waiting exactly 47 days with no updates on my refund. It identified a verification hold I didn't even know about. The analysis showed I was missing exactly $4,200 because of an unprocessed credit that triggered the verification requirement.

Does taxr.ai need access to your actual transcript? I've been looking at resources like irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript and wondering if there's a better way to understand what's happening with these verification holds.

I was in the same boat last year with the verification nonsense. I uploaded my docs online, then had to wait 3 weeks for an in-person appointment, only to have them look at the EXACT SAME documents I already uploaded! I tried taxr.ai after someone here recommended it, and it at least helped me understand what was happening behind the scenes while I waited.

The verification process creates this strange procedural loop that doesn't make sense. Why collect documents digitally if they can't be verified the same way? Why not implement a secure video verification option like banks use? Why force taxpayers to take time off work for something that could be handled remotely? The IRS claims it's about security, but isn't it more about their outdated systems not being able to properly authenticate digital documents?

This verification process is like paying for express shipping and then being told you need to drive to the warehouse anyway. When I couldn't get answers from the IRS website, I tried calling their general line but was on hold forever. Then I found Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) which got me connected to an actual IRS agent in about 15 minutes. They confirmed I could bring alternative documents to my verification appointment if I was missing something specific. Saved me from making multiple trips!

I'm concerned that this verification process might be indicative of broader issues within the IRS modernization efforts. From what I understand, the best approach is to schedule your appointment as soon as possible, bring multiple forms of ID (passport, driver's license, social security card), plus physical copies of any documents you submitted online. It might seem redundant, but unfortunately, the electronic and in-person systems don't always communicate effectively with each other.

Successfully completed my ID verification last week after initially being very frustrated by the process. My appointment took exactly 22 minutes from check-in to completion. The IRS representative verified my Schedule C business income documentation, cross-referenced my 1099-NEC forms, and confirmed my identity using my passport and driver's license. Despite the inconvenience of going in person, the actual appointment was efficient and my return was processed within 48 hours afterward. My refund hit my account this morning!

According to IRS Procedural Notice 2023-56, the enhanced verification procedures were implemented to address the approximately $5.7 billion in fraudulent refund attempts during the previous tax year. While frustrating, these measures have reportedly reduced identity theft refund fraud by 58%. The disconnect between online submission and in-person verification stems from limitations in the IRS Identity Protection PIN system architecture, which currently cannot authenticate certain document types without physical inspection. For high-income filers, this primarily affects those with Schedule C income or claiming certain credits.
