Identity Verification Issues - Online Verification Never Went Through

Filed my taxes on 1/21 (accepted same day) and tried to verify my identity online on 2/4. It's like trying to fix a watch with oven mitts on - frustrating and seemingly impossible. After the online verification, I told myself I wouldn't check or call again for two weeks. But something in my gut was like an alarm clock that wouldn't stop buzzing. Finally decided to call yesterday, and turns out my online verification never actually went through! Like sending a letter but forgetting to put it in the mailbox. Thank goodness the representative asked if I wanted to verify over the phone right then. This retirement income isn't going to manage itself, and the whole process has me drowning in paperwork and confusion. Has anyone else had verification issues this filing season?

Been there, done that! The online ID verify system is super glitchy this yr. Same thing happened to me in Jan - thought I verified but nope! Called after 10 days & found out nothing went thru. Phone verification was way faster tbh. Took like 15 mins tops. Now my refund is scheduled for DD next Tues. Pro tip: always save your confirmation #s for everything IRS related. They're like gold when things get messed up!

Do you think the IRS is purposely making the online system difficult? It's like they've set up a maze where the cheese keeps moving. I've been waiting almost 3 weeks after my phone verification and still nothing on WMR or transcripts.

The Identity Verification System (IVS) has been experiencing significant backend integration failures this filing season. This is primarily due to the IRS transitioning to the new modernized authentication platform while simultaneously processing returns. The system is designed to flag approximately 18% of returns for verification as an anti-fraud measure.

Has anyone checked the IRS operational status page? I was reading there that they've been having scheduled maintenance on the ID verification portal every Tuesday from 1-3am EST. Maybe some verifications are getting caught in those maintenance windows? https://www.irs.gov/help/irs-operations-during-covid-19-mission-critical-functions-continue

Isn't it crazy how the system can just lose our verification like that? I wonder how many other people are sitting around waiting for refunds that are stuck because of failed verifications they don't even know about? Should we all just be calling instead of using the online system? I tried verifying online three times and kept getting error messages, but when I called they verified me in minutes.

I appreciate everyone sharing their experiences! This helps so much. From what I've gathered: ā€¢ Online verification fails silently for many people ā€¢ Phone verification seems more reliable ā€¢ The system doesn't notify you when verification fails ā€¢ Calling sooner rather than later is probably best I'm going to call tomorrow instead of waiting any longer!

There's a major disconnect between the IRS online verification system and their internal processing systems this year. I've seen this issue repeatedly in my professional capacity. The online system generates a confirmation number but fails to properly link that confirmation to your tax account. Last year, approximately 60% of my clients who verified online had to eventually call in. The system is particularly problematic for returns filed in January when the processing load is highest.

I think I might be experiencing this too... I got a confirmation code when I verified online about three weeks ago, but my refund status hasn't changed at all. Should I just go ahead and call even though I have a confirmation number? I'm worried about making things worse somehow.

I had the exact same issue on January 29th, 2024. Online verification showed completed but nothing happened for 14 days. Called on February 12th and found out it never registered in their system. If you're experiencing delays after online verification, don't wait - call the IRS directly. I wasted exactly 14 days thinking everything was fine. If you're having trouble getting through their phone lines, I used Claimyr.com to connect with an agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. The agent confirmed my verification never went through and completed it right away over the phone. Got my refund exactly 9 days later.

The online verification system is basically a digital version of a coin toss this year! šŸŽ² Sometimes it works, sometimes it's just pretending to work. The IRS backend systems are running on technology that's older than some of the agents using it. Their verification database synchronization protocols are experiencing significant latency issues, resulting in approximately 22-28% of all online verifications failing to properly register in the master file database. It's all part of the IRS's grand strategy to make filing taxes as enjoyable as a root canal without anesthesia.

I've been watching these verification issues closely all season. My sister had the exact same problem - verified online in January, got a confirmation number and everything, but when nothing happened for three weeks, she called. The agent told her there was no record of her verification! I'm starting to think the online system is just for show this year. Every person I know who's had to verify has ended up having to call eventually. The IRS knows this is happening but they're not fixing it or warning people. It's concerning how many taxpayers might be just sitting there waiting for refunds that will never come because they think they've verified when they haven't.

Check your tax transcript. Not WMR. Transcripts update first. Look for TC 570 code. This means verification needed. Then TC 971 with notice number. Wait 9 days after verification. Call if no update. Online system fails often. Phone is more reliable. Always get confirmation number. Write it down. Ask agent for expected timeframe. Follow up if needed.

Could this verification issue delay processing even if there's no explicit 570 code showing? I'm familiar with IRS Publication 1345 regarding e-file guidelines, but I'm not seeing clear guidance on verification delays when the transcript doesn't explicitly show verification holds.
