ID Verification: Phone Verification Completed but Online Notice Appeared Days Later?

Just wanted to share a strange experience with the ID verification process and see if anyone else has had this happen. I verified my identity over the phone with the IRS on March 15th (they sent me a letter requesting verification). The agent confirmed everything was good to go and my return would continue processing. Then on March 19th, I logged into my IRS account and saw a notification to verify my identity online. Has anyone else experienced this disconnect between phone and online systems? Just trying to figure out if I need to verify again or if their systems just haven't synced up yet.

This is actually a fairly common issue with the IRS verification systems. Here's what's likely happening: 1. When you verified by phone on March 15th, that information went into one IRS database 2. The online portal pulls from a different database that may not sync immediately 3. The online notification was probably triggered before your phone verification, but only displayed when you logged in 4. It can take 7-10 business days for their different systems to reconcile I'd recommend calling again just to confirm your verification status. Ask specifically if you need to complete the online verification as well. Sometimes you do need to verify through both methods, frustrating as that is.

Thanks for explaining this! Makes sense. Been wondering about this too. Will call tomorrow. Appreciate the steps.

Quick question - did you happen to get a confirmation number or case ID when you verified by phone? The IRS is like a giant cruise ship... turning takes time and communication between decks isn't always smooth sailing! šŸ˜‚ Also, was the letter you received a 5071C, 6331C, or some other number? That might help figure out exactly what verification path you're on.

Not OP but had same issue last yr. Got a 5071C letter, verified by phone on 4/2, then got the online notif on 4/6. Called again & agent said ignore the online msg. Refund hit my acct 2 wks later. Weird system tbh.

The correlation between notification systems and actual verification status demonstrates significant latency in the IRS internal infrastructure. The taxpayer authentication protocol requires propagation through multiple databases which can create these temporal anomalies in notification delivery. I've witnessed similar discrepancies with clients.

This happened to me during last year's tax season! I verified by phone on February 8th and then got the online notification on February 12th. I was completely confused too. I ended up using https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript after all this confusion. It showed me exactly what was happening with my verification status and explained that the online notice was just a system lag. The transcript had codes showing my verification was already complete from the phone call. Saved me from making another frustrating call to the IRS and helped me understand exactly what stage my return was in. My refund showed up about 10 days later.

OMG I had EXACTLY this situation last month!!! šŸ˜± The phone verification went super smooth on March 3rd, agent was really nice and said everything was verified. Then BOOM - March 8th I log in and see that stupid "verify your identity" banner! I freaked out thinking I did something wrong or someone was trying to steal my identity!! I called again and waited TWO HOURS only to have the agent tell me "oh yeah, we see you're already verified, just ignore that online message, it's a system thing." I was like WHY DO YOU PUT PEOPLE THROUGH THIS STRESS?!? šŸ˜  But don't worry - my refund processed normally about 3 weeks after the phone verification. The online notification just disappeared one day.

How long exactly did it take from verification to refund? Did you: ā€¢ Get any interim notices? ā€¢ Have to call again? ā€¢ See transcript updates before the deposit? Dealing with this now and trying to plan my finances.

I experienced this discrepancy during the 2023 filing season. The IRS authentication protocols operate on segregated systems with asynchronous update schedules. My timeline was precisely 17 business days from telephone verification to direct deposit. The WMR tool updated 48 hours prior to deposit with a DDD. I never anticipated such complexity in what should be a straightforward verification process!

Per Internal Revenue Manual 21.1.3.3, verification acknowledgments should propagate across all IRS systems within 72 hours, but during peak season (Feb-April), this can extend to 14 business days. If verification status remains unresolved after this period, taxpayers should request a Taxpayer Advocate Service intervention under IRC 7803(c). My experience suggests patience is warranted, but document all communication attempts.

Think of the IRS systems like different branches of government that don't talk to each other very well. Your phone verification is like getting approval from the State Department while the online system is like the DMV still asking for your paperwork. If you want to get this resolved quickly instead of waiting for their systems to catch up, I'd recommend using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). It's like having a fast-pass at an amusement park - gets you through to an IRS agent without the hours of hold time. I was dealing with a similar verification issue last month and spent 3 days trying to get through on my own. Used Claimyr and was talking to someone in about 15 minutes who confirmed my verification was complete and flagged the online notification as erroneous in their system.

Isn't it amazing how the IRS can demand we submit everything correctly and on time, but their own systems can't communicate with each other properly? One alternative approach: log in to your IRS online account and check your account transcript rather than just the dashboard. Does your transcript show any TC 570 followed by a TC 571 code? That sequence typically indicates verification issues that were subsequently resolved. Also, have you checked your refund status through the Where's My Refund tool? Sometimes that will show processing even when the online account still shows verification needed. The IRS digital infrastructure was designed in the stone age and upgraded with duct tape and wishful thinking.
