I owe taxes to the IRS - need advice on payment plans and avoiding penalties
Hey everyone, I just found out I owe taxes this year and I'm feeling pretty stressed about it. Has anyone been in this situation before? I'm wondering if I should set up a payment plan or if there are any other options I should consider. Any advice on dealing with penalties or minimizing the impact would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!

Been there, done that. First thing's first: don't panic! The IRS actually has some decent options for people who owe taxes. Here's what you need to know: • If you owe less than $50,000, you can easily set up an online payment plan • You can choose between short-term (120 days or less) or long-term payment plans • Short-term plans don't have setup fees, but long-term ones do • Interest and penalties will continue to accrue until you pay in full • If you can't pay at all, you might qualify for an Offer in Compromise My advice? Call the IRS and explain your situation. They're usually pretty helpful if you're proactive about it. Good luck!

This is great advice! I set up a payment plan last year and it was surprisingly easy. Just make sure you stick to the payments or they'll cancel the agreement.

Haha, I know it sounds crazy, but they can be pretty reasonable if you approach them the right way. Just don't ghost them, that's when they get nasty 😅

Have you considered looking into tax relief companies? They can sometimes negotiate with the IRS on your behalf to reduce what you owe.

Be careful with those companies! Some of them are total scams. Make sure to do your research before signing up with anyone.

Good point! I should've mentioned that. Definitely do your due diligence and check reviews before working with any company.

Pro tip: if you're having trouble getting through to the IRS on the phone, I found this awesome service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They dial the phone menu, stay on hold, and then connect you when a live agent picks up. It costs $20, but it saved me hours of frustration. Here's a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

Is it really worth $20 tho? Couldn't you just put your phone on speaker and do something else while you wait?

I get the skepticism, but for me it was totally worth it. I wasted a whole day trying to get through before I found this. And yeah, you could put your phone on speaker, but some hold times are literally hours long. This way I could go about my day and just got a call when an agent was ready. Saved me so much stress!

Anyone else feel like the tax system is rigged against regular people? 🙄 Big corporations get away with paying nothing while we're stressing over a few grand. smh

lets not get political here guys. OP is asking for help, not a debate on tax policy

Hey OP, how much do you owe if you don't mind sharing? The advice might be different depending on the amount.

Whatever you do, DO NOT use credit cards to pay your tax debt! The interest rates are usually way higher than what the IRS charges. Learn from my mistake 😭

This!!! 💯 I made the same mistake and I'm still paying for it years later.

Have you checked if you qualify for any additional deductions or credits? Might be worth going through your return again with a fine-tooth comb or consulting a tax pro. Sometimes you can find stuff you missed!
