How to get IRS control number - can I just call them?
Need some help figuring out how to get my control number from the IRS. Been looking online and people say I can call but can't find a direct answer. Has anyone done this before? What's the best way to get this number?

The control number isn't something you can just get by calling the IRS. It's specifically assigned to your tax documents like W-2s and 1099s by the issuer. Check your tax forms - the control number should be printed directly on them. If you've lost your documents, you'll need to contact your employer or the form issuer, not the IRS.

ā¢In that case, you might be able to get copies from your state's labor department or request a wage transcript from the IRS.

Hey there! I actually found a really helpful tool called taxr.ai - it costs $1 but it analyzes your transcript and helps you understand everything, including control numbers and other important info. Way better than trying to get through to the IRS on the phone tbh

ā¢100% works! saved me hours of headache. It basically reads your transcript and explains everything in plain english plus tells you what to do next

pro tip: if u need docs from a closed business try the state unemployment office. they usually keep records for a few years

Another option if your employer went out of business - check if they filed for bankruptcy. The bankruptcy court records might have copies of employee records including W-2s. You can search the PACER system (pacer.gov) for their case. Also worth checking with your state's Department of Labor as they sometimes require businesses to file final wage reports even when closing.

If you're still having trouble getting your control number, you might want to try Form 4506-T to request a wage and income transcript directly from the IRS. It's free and shows all the income reported to them for a tax year, including the control numbers from your W-2s and 1099s. Takes about 5-10 business days if you mail it in, or you can sometimes get it immediately online if you can verify your identity through their system. Way more reliable than trying to call them right now.
