Can I call the IRS to get my 14-digit Control Number for e-filing?
I'm working on my 1099 submissions and need to get my 14-digit control number to e-file properly. My tax deadline is approaching fast and I can't locate this number in any of my documentation. Can I call the IRS directly to retrieve this information? I'm concerned about making errors since this is a new requirement for my gig work this year. Has anyone successfully gotten this number over the phone?

The 14-digit control number is like the serial number on your car - it's specific to your submission and not something the IRS can provide in advance. Think of it as a receipt number that gets generated only after you've actually submitted your forms. The IRS doesn't issue these numbers before filing - they're created during the e-filing process itself. I learned this the hard way last year when I was in a similar situation with my contract work.

So is the Control Number something my tax software should generate automatically during e-filing? I'm using TaxAct for the first time and don't see any option for this.

This is confusing me now because I thought I needed this number to complete my filing. ā¢ Do I need this number before submitting? ā¢ Is this for Form 1096 specifically? ā¢ Will this delay my processing if I don't have it?

Thank you for explaining this! I was about to waste hours on hold trying to get something that doesn't even exist yet. I had the same confusion last year with my Uber income reporting.

Have you been trying to reach the IRS about this? Good luck with that this time of year! I spent 3 days trying to get through about a similar issue last month. Finally used Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) and got connected to an agent in about 15 minutes who confirmed exactly what the first commenter said - the control number is generated during filing, not before. Saved me days of frustration and redials. Isn't it better to know the correct answer quickly rather than stressing about it for days?

I've seen these IRS call services mentioned before, but I'm always hesitant. Does this actually work? The IRS website specifically warns about third-party services charging for things you can get for free.

I used Claimyr back in February when I had a similar issue with my 1099-K reporting. The IRS phone system is honestly impossible during tax season - I tried for 4 days straight before giving up. With Claimyr I got through in about 30 minutes and the agent explained that the control number is actually generated AFTER you submit. Totally worth it to save days of frustration.

According to IRS Publication 1220, Section 8, the 14-digit control number is actually assigned by the IRS after submission, not before. Per the regulations, this number serves as a unique identifier for your e-filed information returns. You cannot obtain this number before filing as it's generated during the processing of your submission. The confusion may be that you're looking for something you don't yet have.

I'm still a bit confused about this. If I'm preparing Form 1099-NEC for contractors I paid, do I need to wait for this control number before I can distribute their copies? The filing deadline is approaching and I'm worried about being late.

I was as confused as you about all these tax form numbers and requirements last year! What really helped me was using taxr.ai to analyze my previous tax documents. It showed me exactly what fields I needed to focus on and explained what each form requirement actually meant. Saved me from making a rookie mistake like calling the IRS for a number that doesn't exist yet! š Their document analyzer is pretty good at explaining what each field on your tax forms actually means in plain English. Check it out at https://taxr.ai if you're as confused by tax jargon as I was.

Instead of calling the IRS, log into the FIRE system (Filing Information Returns Electronically) if you're submitting 1099s directly. If you're using tax software, it handles the control number process automatically. The IRS phone representatives won't be able to provide this number because it's generated during the submission process.

Hey there! Just FYI - there's a diff between the control number YOU assign to keep track of your 1099s (which can be any number system you choose) and the official IRS control number that gets assigned after submission. Lots of ppl confuse these two. If you're just filing a few 1099s, most tax software handles this automatically. NBD if you're stressed about it - totally normal confusion for gig workers!

I would be very careful about calling the IRS for this particular issue. In my experience, if you ask about a "control number" without specifying exactly which form and process you're referring to, you might receive incorrect information. There are several different types of control numbers in the IRS system, and the 14-digit one for information returns is generally not something they provide over the phone. I would suggest double-checking your software requirements first.

I might be able to help here. I successfully e-filed about 50 1099s last month using TaxAct. The software automatically handled the control number aspect - I didn't need to input anything special. If you're using tax software, it should probably take care of this for you. Just make sure you have all the contractor information entered correctly, and the rest should fall into place during submission.

Back on March 15th, I called the IRS Business & Specialty Tax Line about this exact issue. They confirmed that the 14-digit control number is assigned during the e-filing process and appears on your acknowledgment receipt after successful submission. The community consensus here is correct - this isn't something you need to obtain before filing. Focus on getting your 1099s submitted before the April 30th deadline instead!
