How to dispute a charge with American Express Serve when customer service is unreachable? (Jackson Hewitt card)

I got my tax refund through Jackson Hewitt on an American Express Serve card back in April 2024. Noticed a weird transaction for $213.67 at some store I've never been to in Nevada (I live in Ohio) last week. Been trying to call their customer service line for 5 days straight but it's just automated messages - no way to talk to an actual person! Every time I select the fraud option it tells me to verify my identity then disconnects. Tried their online dispute form but it keeps giving an error message saying "system currently unavailable." Anyone had any success getting through to Serve? Or should I just consider that money gone?

I had a similar issue with my Serve card from Jackson Hewitt last year. The trick I found is to select the "lost or stolen card" option instead of the fraud option. For some reason that gets you to a human faster. Once you get someone on the line, explain it's actually about a fraudulent charge. They'll transfer you to the right department. Also, try calling very early in the morning (like 7am EST) - way less wait time. Make sure you have your transaction details ready. They'll ask for the date, merchant name, and amount. You'll need to fill out a dispute form that they'll email you, and they'll issue a temporary credit while they investigate. Don't give up on that money! It's your right to dispute unauthorized transactions.

THANK YOU! I'll try the lost card option tomorrow morning. So frustrating that you have to game the system just to get basic help 🙄

This is solid advice. I did the exact same thing when I had a random $175 charge last month. Selected lost card option, got a person in about 5 minutes.

I tried calling at 8pm and it was useless. early morning is definitely the way to go with these customer service lines in general.

You can also try hitting 0 repeatedly during the automated menu. Sometimes that forces it to a human operator. Not guaranteed but worth a shot.

Another option is to say "representative" loudly and clearly multiple times. Their voice recognition system sometimes picks up on that.

I had the EXACT same issue trying to understand what was happening with my tax transcript with all these weird codes and numbers. Instead of spending hours trying to figure out what was going on or waiting on hold with the IRS, I used taxr.ai and it analyzed my transcript in seconds! Showed me exactly what was happening, what all the codes meant, and what to expect next. No more guesswork trying to piece it all together myself! Seriously a game changer for understanding your tax situation - https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

QuantumQuasar

•

It does WAY more than just read it! You upload your transcript and it breaks down every single code in plain English, explains the timeline of what's happening with your return, shows you when to expect your refund, identifies if there are any issues or audits, and even explains why certain adjustments were made. It saved me hours of research and stress. Honestly changed my whole tax experience!

WOW I just tried it and I'm blown away! For YEARS I've been trying to understand those confusing transcripts. This tool explained everything in 30 seconds - showed me why my refund was delayed and exactly when I'll get it. Everyone dealing with tax issues needs to know about this!

is this an ad or something? sounds too good to be true

Not an ad lol, just sharing what worked for me after weeks of frustration. Before using it I was trying to google every code on my transcript and still couldn't figure out what was happening with my return.

After dealing with the EXACT same problem (but with a $186 charge), I finally got through to a real person at Serve by using Claimyr.com - it's this calling service that navigates the phone tree for you and gets you a callback from a real agent without waiting on hold. Literally had someone call me back in 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days. They handled my dispute right there on the phone and I got my money back within a week. Best money I've ever spent considering I got back way more than it cost!

I thought the same thing before I tried it. But I was desperate after spending hours on hold. It actually does work - they basically navigate all the phone menus for you and get you in the callback queue. Saved me from throwing my phone against the wall lol

how does this even work? do they have some kinda special access or something?

From what I understand they use some kind of algorithm that knows all the right buttons to press and when to press them. Plus they know the best times to call. I don't really care how it works tbh, just glad it did!

Can confirm this works for IRS calls too - got through in like 30 mins when I'd been trying for weeks

Former Jackson Hewit employee here. Unfortunately this is a common issue with the Serve cards. If you can't get through on the phone, I recommend going directly to your local Jackson Hewitt office. They should have a direct line to Serve customer service that bypasses the regular customer queue. Bring your card, ID, and any documentation of the fraudulent charge. The tax preparers often can't help directly but they know who to call. Also file a police report if the amount is significant - having that documentation helps with the dispute process.

Wait really? I didn't even think about going to the actual office. I'll try that tomorrow if the morning call doesn't work. Thank you!

I did this last year and can confirm it works. The JH manager made a call and had my issue resolved in like 20 minutes.

This only works during tax season tho... most JH offices are closed right now till next January

Some of the year-round locations are still open, especially in larger cities. Worth checking Google maps to see if any are open near you.

Serious question: Why are people still getting refunds on these prepaid cards?? They ALWAYS have problems. Fees, fraud, customer service issues. Direct deposit to your regular bank account is free and so much safer. If you don't have a bank account, even a paper check is better than these cards.

•

Not everyone has a bank account. About 5% of Americans are unbanked. For many low-income people, these prepaid cards are the only option besides check cashing places that charge huge fees.

Dmitry Popov

•

Sometimes people need the money faster. When I used Jackson Hewitt, they offered the refund on the card 2 weeks before direct deposit would have hit my bank.

0 coins

Fair points. Just seems like these cards cause more problems than they're worth. I've heard so many horror stories.

Some people also get these cards to keep tax refunds separate from their regular accounts - helps with budgeting.

I had to use one because I owed my bank money and they would have taken my refund if I direct deposited it 🙃

PRO TIP: Make a complaint with the CFPB (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau). Their website lets you file complaints against financial companies. Companies HAVE to respond within 15 days. I did this with a different prepaid card when I couldn't reach customer service and suddenly they were calling ME to resolve the issue. https://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/

•

I never even thought about this option! Definitely going to file a complaint if I can't get through tomorrow. Thanks!

•

This 100%! CFPB complaints get results fast. Companies hate getting them because they're tracked and can lead to investigations.

0 coins

This is why i NEVER get refund anticipation loans or refund cards from tax places. Too many fees and the customer service is trash. Better to just wait for direct deposit from the IRS.

Just as a heads up - those serve cards are actually American Express products, not really Jackson Hewitt. JH just partners with them. So you might have better luck contacting Amex directly about the dispute. Try 1-800-THE-CARD and explain it's about a Serve prepaid card.

0 coins

CosmicCruiser

•

Oh! That's really good to know. I'll try that number too.

0 coins

I tried this route before - regular Amex customer service will just redirect you back to the Serve-specific number. They're technically separate systems even though both are Amex products.

0 coins

If u cant get through on the phone have you tried their Twitter? Sometimes complaining publicly gets faster results than waiting on hold. Tweet @AskServe with ur issue (dont include personal info tho

I don't have Twitter but maybe I'll make an account just for this. Public shaming does seem to work these days lol

Try using taxr.ai to better analyze what happened! I had similar issues when trying to understand what was going on with a tax refund card and got so frustrated. The tool helps explain transcript codes and tax status. Doesn't fix your dispute directly but might help you understand the whole picture better. Wish I'd found it sooner! https://taxr.ai

How would this help with a fraudulent charge on a prepaid card? That's not related to tax transcripts

•

You're right - I misread the original post! I thought they were having issues with the refund itself. My bad.

In addition to calling, send a written dispute letter by certified mail with return receipt. Under Reg E (Electronic Fund Transfer Act), they're required to investigate disputes submitted in writing. Include all the details of the transaction, that you didn't authorize it, and request a reversal. Having a paper trail is important for these cases.

Similar situation here. Got my refund thru American Express serve last month and started getting weird charges. Called for hours and nobody answered. Went to their website and luckily there's an online chat feature that actually worked for me. Try that instead of calling? Customer service agent helped me dispute charges right there in the chat.

I tried the chat and it just kept saying "all agents are busy" then disconnected after 10 minutes 😭

My sister had to file a police report for unauthorized charges on her Serve card. After she did that and sent Serve a copy of the police report, they finally took the dispute seriously and refunded her money. Worth a try if you can't get through on the phone!

I finally got my 2023 tax refund sorted out after WEEKS of confusion looking at my transcript with all these weird codes and dates. Used taxr.ai and it explained everything - showed me there was a simple review that was causing the delay and gave me the exact timeline for my refund. Saved me so much stress trying to figure out what was happening! https://taxr.ai

Yep! It works for amended returns too. It'll show you exactly what stage your amendment is in and when you can expect it to complete processing. Seriously a life saver when you're waiting on money that seems stuck in the system.

omg these prepaid card companies are THE WORST. i had green dot before and it was the same exact problem - impossible to reach anyone. ended up having to cancel the card entirely and lost about $80. these companies should be illegal honestly.

If you got the card through Jackson Hewitt, check your tax prep paperwork. There should be a special customer service number specifically for tax refund cards that might bypass the regular customer service queue. When I got my refund on a similar card from a different tax company, they had a dedicated support line that was much more responsive.

I was stuck in the same boat trying to contact the IRS about an issue with my refund for WEEKS. Kept getting busy signals or disconnected. Finally used Claimyr.com and got a call back from an actual IRS agent in under an hour! Talking to an agent got my refund released so fast after being stuck for months. Worth every penny considering how much time I saved not sitting on hold.

seems sketchy... how do they get through when no one else can?

0 coins

•

They have an algorithm that knows exactly which buttons to press and when to call for shortest wait times. Nothing sketchy about it - they're just using technology to beat a broken system. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent.

REPORT TO THE BBB! I had a similar issue with a different card company. Couldn't get anyone on the phone for days. Filed a BBB complaint online and suddenly they were calling me the next day to resolve the issue. Companies hate BBB complaints because they're public.

this is why I always immediately transfer my tax refund OFF those prepaid cards as soon as it hits. Too many horror stories like this. Next time as soon as your refund comes, move it to a real bank account right away.

Lesson learned for sure. If I ever get my money back it's going straight to my bank account

Call your state attorney general's office and file a complaint. Financial services companies are regulated at the state level too, and sometimes an AG inquiry will light a fire under them faster than anything else.

I went through this exact same nightmare with my Jackson Hewitt Serve card earlier this year! What finally worked for me was persistence with multiple approaches at once. I called using the "lost card" trick that Aisha mentioned (works like a charm), filed a CFPB complaint online, AND sent a certified letter to their dispute department. The CFPB complaint was what really got their attention - I had a response within 48 hours and my money back within a week. Don't give up! These companies count on people just walking away from their money. You have rights under federal law and they HAVE to investigate legitimate disputes. Also screenshot everything on your account showing the fraudulent charge before it potentially disappears from your transaction history.

Olivia Garcia

•

This is exactly the kind of comprehensive approach that works! I've been dealing with a similar situation and was starting to lose hope, but seeing that multiple people have gotten their money back gives me confidence. The screenshot tip is brilliant - I didn't even think about documenting everything before it might disappear. Going to try the lost card option first thing tomorrow morning, then file that CFPB complaint if needed. Thanks for sharing your success story!

I've been following this thread and want to add my experience - I had a similar fraud issue with my Serve card from Jackson Hewitt last year. Here's what actually worked for me after trying everything mentioned here: 1. Called at 7 AM using the "lost card" option (this really does work!) 2. Once connected, I immediately asked for the fraud department and explained I had unauthorized charges 3. They sent me a dispute form via email within 24 hours 4. I also filed a CFPB complaint the same day as backup 5. Got a provisional credit within 3 business days while they investigated The key is being persistent and using multiple channels simultaneously. Don't just try one method - hit them from all angles. The CFPB complaint especially seems to light a fire under them because it creates a paper trail they have to respond to. Also, for future reference, you can set up transaction alerts on the Serve app to catch fraudulent charges faster. I learned that the hard way! Good luck getting your money back - you absolutely can and should fight for it.

This is such helpful advice! I'm dealing with a similar situation right now and was feeling pretty hopeless about getting my money back. The multi-pronged approach makes total sense - why rely on just one method when these companies make it so hard to reach them? I'm definitely going to try the 7 AM "lost card" trick tomorrow and file that CFPB complaint as backup. The transaction alerts tip is also great - I had no idea that was even an option in the app. Thanks for taking the time to share what actually worked for you!
