Amended Tax Return Shows "Completed" Since August 4 - No Information If I'm Getting a Refund?
I have been looking at my transcript for hours and I'm completely lost. Can someone who knows these codes help me understand what's going on with my refund? Been waiting since February and these codes are like reading another language. I finally checked the "Where's My Amended Return" tool on the IRS website for my 2022 return, and here's what I'm seeing: Received: 04/13/2023 Adjusted: 07/14/2023 Completed: 08/04/2023 It says "Your Form 1040X has completed processing resulting in a refund, balance due, or no tax change." There's also this message: "We processed your amended return on August 04, 2023." And it provides this note: "If you have not received a notice and you would like to speak to a customer service representative, call 800-829-0582, extension 633, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. You will need a copy of your amended return." I'm so confused! I filed my original return in February, then had to amend in April. It's now been several months since they say it's "completed" but I still don't know if I'm getting a refund or what the status is. Has anyone dealt with this? Do I just need to call that number? The website doesn't actually tell me if I'm getting money back or if I owe more!

Hey, tax expert here. Those transcript codes can be super confusing, I know! The IRS uses specific codes to track different actions on your account. Instead of trying to decode everything manually, I'd highly recommend checking out taxr.ai - it's this new AI tool that breaks down all your transcript codes and gives you a clear timeline for your refund. I've been recommending it to my clients and they love how it explains everything in plain English. You can upload your transcript and get instant analysis at https://taxr.ai

Those IRS transcripts can be super confusing! Without seeing the specific codes you're looking at, it's hard to give exact help. But generally, the most common codes you'll see are 570 (refund hold), 971 (notice issued), and 846 (refund issued). What codes are you seeing on yours?

β’sorry shouldve been more specific! im seeing 570 and 971 but dont know what that means for my refund timeline π

β’Ah gotcha - 570/971 combo usually means they're reviewing something. Could be identity verification or income verification. Check your mail for any notices!

Hey! Have you tried taxr.ai? It's this new tool that basically translates all those confusing transcript codes and tells you exactly what's happening with your refund. Saved me hours of googling! It's like $5 but totally worth it https://taxr.ai

Pro tip: Take screenshots of your transcript and document everything. Sometimes codes change and its good to have a record.

Former tax preparer here. The transcript system was designed for tax professionals, not regular taxpayers, which is why it's so confusing. Each code represents a different action taken on your account. The dates and cycle numbers are also important - they can tell you when to expect updates.

β’wait what do you mean by cycle numbers? where do i find those?

β’Look for a number that starts with 20XX and ends in 05 or 03 - thats your cycle code. 05 cycles update thursday nights, 03 on wednesday

Ugh, I feel your pain! I went through the exact same thing with my amended return last year. That "completed" status is so misleading - it just means they finished processing it, not that you'll definitely get money back. From what you described, since it says "resulting in a refund, balance due, or no tax change" they're basically saying "we're done but we're not telling you which one it is" π Honestly, I'd just bite the bullet and call that number they gave you (800-829-0582, ext 633). I know nobody wants to sit on hold for hours but it's literally the only way to get a straight answer about whether you're getting a refund or not. When I called, they were able to tell me exactly what my refund amount was and when to expect it. The transcript codes will show more detail but if you're not used to reading them it's like deciphering ancient scrolls lol. Good luck!

I totally get the frustration with those transcript codes! Been there myself. The "completed" status on amended returns is super misleading - it just means they finished processing, not that you'll get money back for sure. Since you're seeing it's been "completed" since August but still don't know if you're getting a refund, I'd definitely call that number they provided (800-829-0582, ext 633). Yeah, the hold times suck, but it's really the only way to get a clear answer about your specific situation. When you call, have your amended return handy and your SSN ready. They should be able to tell you exactly what the outcome was - whether you're getting a refund, owe more, or if there was no change to your tax liability. The transcript codes can give you more detail, but honestly they're designed for tax professionals and can be super confusing for regular taxpayers. Don't feel bad about not being able to decode them - most people can't! Hope you get some good news when you call! π€

β’This is super helpful, thank you! I've been avoiding calling because I hate being on hold forever but sounds like there's really no way around it. Going to set aside a morning this week to call and finally get some answers. Really appreciate the tip about having my amended return ready - would have definitely forgotten that and had to call back π

I've been in this exact situation before! That "completed" status is so misleading - it literally just means they finished processing your amended return, but doesn't tell you the outcome. Super frustrating! Since it's been "completed" since August and you still don't know if you're getting a refund, I'd definitely recommend calling that number (800-829-0582, ext 633). I know the hold times are brutal, but it's really the only way to get a clear answer about whether you're getting money back or if there was no change. When you call, make sure to have your amended return and SSN ready. They should be able to tell you exactly what happened - refund amount, balance due, or no change. Those transcript codes are designed for tax professionals, so don't feel bad about not understanding them. Most regular taxpayers can't decode them either! The important thing is getting your answer about the refund status. Good luck - hopefully it's good news when you finally get through! π€

β’Totally agree about calling being the only real solution here! I went through something similar and kept putting off the call because I dreaded the wait time. When I finally did call, I was on hold for like 45 minutes but the rep was actually super helpful and cleared everything up in 5 minutes. They told me my exact refund amount and that it would be direct deposited within 2 weeks - and it was! Sometimes you just gotta bite the bullet and make the call π

Ugh, I feel your pain with those transcript codes! I went through something similar with my amended return earlier this year. That "completed" status is SO confusing because it doesn't actually tell you the outcome - just that they're done processing it. Since yours has been showing "completed" since August but you still don't know if you're getting a refund, I'd honestly just call that number they gave you (800-829-0582, ext 633). When I finally called about mine, the rep was able to pull up my account and tell me exactly what my refund amount was and when to expect it. Make sure you have your amended return handy when you call - they'll ask for details from it. Those transcript codes might as well be in a foreign language for us regular folks! Don't stress about trying to decode them yourself. Focus on getting that phone call made and hopefully you'll get some good news! π€

β’This is exactly what I needed to hear! I've been stressing about this for months and keep putting off the call because I'm dreading the wait time. Thanks for the encouragement, gonna try calling tomorrow morning and hopefully finally get some answers π

I totally understand your frustration! I went through the exact same thing with my amended return last year. That "completed" status is so misleading - it just means they finished processing but doesn't tell you the actual outcome. Here's what I learned: when it says "resulting in a refund, balance due, or no tax change" they're literally telling you it could be any of those three options but not which one applies to YOU. So annoying! Your best bet is definitely calling that number (800-829-0582, ext 633). I put it off for weeks because I dreaded the hold time, but when I finally called, the rep could see everything on my account immediately. They told me my exact refund amount and when to expect it. Pro tip: Call first thing in the morning (right at 7am) for shorter wait times. Have your amended return, SSN, and original return handy. The rep will need to verify some info from your forms. Those transcript codes are honestly designed for tax professionals, not regular people. Don't beat yourself up trying to decode them - even CPAs sometimes need to look things up! Fingers crossed you get good news when you call! π€

β’Omg thank you so much for the detailed advice! The 7am tip is genius - I never thought about timing the call strategically. Really appreciate you taking the time to explain everything so clearly. Definitely calling tomorrow morning with all my paperwork ready! π

I'm going through the exact same nightmare right now! Filed my amended return in March and it's been showing "completed" since September but I have NO idea if I'm getting a refund or not. It's so frustrating that they can't just put a simple "you're getting $X back" or "you owe $Y more" message instead of that vague "resulting in a refund, balance due, or no tax change" nonsense. I finally broke down and called that 800 number last week. Was on hold for over an hour but the rep was actually really helpful once I got through. Turns out I AM getting a refund - $847 - and she said it should hit my account within 3-4 weeks. She also explained that the "completed" status just means they finished reviewing it, not that they've actually issued any payment yet. Definitely call that number they gave you - it's literally the only way to find out what's actually happening. Have your amended return and SSN ready because they'll verify a bunch of info. Good luck! π€

β’That's such a relief to hear you finally got answers! An hour hold time is brutal but totally worth it for that peace of mind. $847 is a nice chunk of change too! I'm definitely going to call tomorrow - you've convinced me it's the only way to stop driving myself crazy wondering. Thanks for sharing your experience, it gives me hope that I'll actually get a helpful rep who can explain what's going on. Fingers crossed I get good news like you did! π€π°

Ugh, I completely feel your pain! Those transcript codes are like trying to read hieroglyphics. I went through this exact same situation with my 2022 amended return - filed in March, showed "completed" for months but had no clue if I was actually getting money back or what. That "completed" status is the worst because it literally just means they finished processing it, not that they've told you the outcome. The whole "resulting in a refund, balance due, or no tax change" message is basically them saying "we know but we're not telling you which one" π I finally sucked it up and called that 800-829-0582 ext 633 number after putting it off for weeks. Was on hold for about 50 minutes (painful but worth it), and the rep could immediately see everything on my account. She told me I was getting a $1,247 refund and it would be direct deposited within 2-3 weeks - and she was right! My advice: call first thing in the morning around 7am for shorter wait times, and have your amended return, SSN, and original return ready. They'll verify info from your forms. Don't stress about decoding those transcript codes yourself - even tax pros sometimes need to look them up. Hope you get good news when you call! π€

I'm dealing with the exact same frustrating situation! Filed my amended return back in May and it's been showing "completed" since October, but I have absolutely no clue if I'm actually getting a refund or not. That generic message about "resulting in a refund, balance due, or no tax change" is so unhelpful - like thanks IRS, that really narrows it down π Reading through all these comments, it sounds like calling that 800-829-0582 ext 633 number is really the only way to get a straight answer. I've been avoiding it because I hate being on hold forever, but clearly there's no way around it if I want to know what's actually happening with my money. Those transcript codes might as well be written in ancient Greek for all the sense they make to regular people like us. It's ridiculous that they make this process so confusing when it's literally our own tax information! Going to try calling tomorrow morning around 7am like some of you suggested - hopefully I'll finally get some answers after months of wondering. Thanks for all the advice everyone, it's reassuring to know I'm not the only one struggling with this!

β’I'm in the exact same boat! Filed my amended return in April and it's been showing "completed" since September but I'm still totally in the dark about whether I'm getting money back. That vague "refund, balance due, or no tax change" message is the most unhelpful thing ever - like just tell us which one it is! I keep putting off calling too because who wants to sit on hold for an hour, but everyone here is saying it's literally the only way to get answers. Guess we're both going to have to bite the bullet and make that dreaded phone call. At least now I know to call at 7am sharp for better wait times! Maybe we'll both get lucky and actually talk to helpful reps who can explain what's going on with our returns π€
