Amended Return Processed 10/18/24 But No Refund Received - IRS Shows "Completed" Status
I'm looking at my Where's My Amended Return tool for 2023 and I'm trying to understand what's going on with my refund. The tool shows three specific dates: Received: 06/06/2024 Adjusted: 09/27/2024 Completed: 10/18/2024 According to the IRS website, "We processed your amended return on October 18, 2024." But I still haven't received my refund even though it's marked as "Completed." The status page has question mark icons next to each status (Received ?, Adjusted ?, Completed ?), but doesn't explain what each stage actually means. I checked this at 3:47 on the official IRS.gov website, where it says "An official website of the United States Government" at the top. The page mentions that "If you have not received a notice and you would like to speak to a customer service representative, call 800-829-0582, extension 633, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. You will need a copy of your amended return." There's also an "EXIT" button and "SELECT ANOTHER YEAR" option at the bottom of the page, along with an "Español" language option at the top. I'm particularly confused since it's been marked as completed for a while now but I still haven't received my refund. Does the "Completed" status mean they've already sent the refund? Or does it just mean they finished processing but haven't issued payment yet? Has anyone else experienced a delay after reaching the "Completed" stage?

The Where's My Amended Return (WMAR) tool shows three key processing dates for your 2023 amended tax return. The Received date (06/06/2024) marks when the IRS officially logged your amended return into their system. The Adjusted date (09/27/2024) indicates when the IRS reviewed your return and made any necessary changes or corrections. The Completed date (10/18/2024) confirms that all processing is finished. The completion status shown on October 18, 2024, typically means your refund should be issued within 2-3 weeks of that date. However, if you haven't received your refund by early November, you should contact the IRS at the provided number (800-829-0582, extension 633) during their business hours (7 AM - 7 PM, Monday-Friday). Make sure to have your amended return copy ready when you call. It's worth noting that the approximately 3.5-month processing time from receipt to completion (June 6 to October 18) is within normal IRS processing timeframes for amended returns, which can take up to 16 weeks. The presence of all three dates indicates your return has moved through all normal processing stages successfully.

•Thank you! Do you know if the refund comes as a check or direct deposit?

•Amended return refunds always come as paper checks, never direct deposit. Keep an eye on your mailbox! 📬

Hey guys, instead of trying to decode these dates yourself, you should try taxr.ai - it's this new tool that analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's happening with your refund. It costs $1 but saved me hours of headache trying to figure out my amended return status. https://taxr.ai

I had a similar situation last year - my amended return showed "Completed" status but I didn't receive the refund for about 6 weeks after that date. Turns out they had to do some additional verification on their end even though it showed completed. When I finally called the number you mentioned, they told me the check was actually mailed out 2 weeks prior but got lost in the mail. They reissued it and I got it within 10 days. Definitely call that customer service line since it's been over 2 months since your completion date - that's longer than normal even for amended returns.

•That's really helpful to know! 6 weeks after completion seems like it might be more common than I thought. The fact that yours got lost in the mail is concerning but at least they were able to reissue it quickly once you called. I'm definitely going to call that number tomorrow morning - it's been way too long at this point. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I went through something similar with my 2022 amended return. The "Completed" status doesn't always mean your refund was immediately issued - sometimes there are additional internal processing steps that happen after that date. In my case, it took about 4-5 weeks after the completion date to receive my check. However, since you're well past that timeframe (it's been over 3 months since your October 18th completion date), I'd definitely recommend calling that customer service number. When you call, ask specifically if the refund check was issued and when, or if there are any holds or additional reviews needed. Make sure to have your Social Security number, the exact refund amount you're expecting, and your amended return handy when you call. The wait times can be long but it's worth it to get a definitive answer about your refund status.

•This is super helpful! I had no idea there could be additional processing steps after the "Completed" status. 3+ months does seem excessive though. I'm going to call first thing tomorrow morning with all that info ready. Did they give you any explanation for why it took so long in your case, or was it just standard processing delays?

I'm dealing with a similar situation right now with my 2023 amended return. Mine shows "Completed" as of December 15th, 2024, but still no refund check. Based on what everyone's sharing here, it sounds like there can definitely be delays even after the completion date. The fact that yours has been completed since October and you still haven't received anything is definitely cause for concern though. I'd echo what others have said about calling that customer service line - 800-829-0582 ext 633. From what I've read, they can tell you if the check was actually issued and mailed, or if there's some kind of hold or additional review happening behind the scenes. It's frustrating that the "Completed" status doesn't actually mean you're done waiting! Keep us posted on what you find out when you call.

•Thanks for sharing your timeline! It's somewhat reassuring to know I'm not the only one dealing with this, though December 15th is much more recent than my October date. The inconsistency in how long it takes after "Completed" status is really frustrating - some people get it in 2-3 weeks, others wait months. I'm definitely calling tomorrow morning and will update everyone on what they tell me. Hopefully they can at least confirm whether the check was actually mailed or if there's some issue holding it up. Good luck with yours too - maybe the newer completion date means yours will come through faster!

I work for a tax preparation service and see this situation pretty frequently. The "Completed" status on Where's My Amended Return can be misleading because it just means they finished processing your return, not that your refund was necessarily issued that same day. There are often backend administrative steps that happen after completion - things like final quality reviews, check printing queues, and mailing processing. Given that it's been over 3 months since your October 18th completion date, something is definitely off. In my experience, even with normal delays, you should have received your refund check by now. When you call that customer service number (800-829-0582 ext 633), ask them specifically: 1. Was a refund check issued and if so, what date? 2. What was the exact refund amount issued? 3. What address was it mailed to? 4. Is there any hold or additional review on your account? Also, double-check that the IRS has your current address on file - sometimes checks get sent to old addresses and people don't realize it. The representatives can usually reissue a check if it was lost in the mail, but you'll need to verify it was actually sent first. Good luck and definitely call tomorrow!

•This is exactly the kind of detailed breakdown I needed! As someone new to dealing with amended returns, I had no idea there were all these backend steps after the "Completed" status. Your checklist of questions to ask when calling is super helpful - I'm writing those down now. I definitely want to verify the address they have on file since I did move last year. Really appreciate you sharing your professional insights on this! It makes me feel more confident about what to ask for when I call tomorrow morning.

I had a very similar experience with my 2023 amended return. Mine showed "Completed" status in September 2024 but I didn't receive my refund check until mid-December - almost 3 months later! When I finally called that customer service number, they told me the check had been issued about 6 weeks after the completion date but there was some kind of processing delay in their check mailing system. The rep was actually really helpful and could see exactly when the check was cut and mailed. In my case, they had to reissue it because the original got stuck somewhere in their internal mailing process. The replacement check arrived within 2 weeks of that call. Since you're at the 3+ month mark past your October completion date, I'd definitely call 800-829-0582 ext 633 ASAP. Have your SSN, expected refund amount, and current address ready. Ask specifically if a check was issued and when, plus confirm they have your correct mailing address. Don't let them just tell you to "wait longer" - at this point something is clearly wrong and needs to be resolved. Good luck!

•This gives me a lot of hope! The fact that your check eventually came through after 3 months and they were able to track exactly what happened is reassuring. It sounds like there might be some systemic issues with their check mailing process that they don't really advertise. I'm definitely not going to accept "wait longer" as an answer at this point - you're absolutely right that something is clearly wrong after 3+ months. Thanks for the specific details about what to ask for and the timeline of how yours played out. I'll make sure to be persistent when I call tomorrow morning!

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! My amended return shows "Completed" on November 22, 2024, but still no refund check. Reading through all these experiences is both helpful and concerning - it seems like the "Completed" status really doesn't mean what we think it means. The fact that some people are waiting 3+ months after completion while others get their checks in 2-3 weeks shows there's clearly inconsistency in their backend processing. I'm bookmarking that customer service number (800-829-0582 ext 633) and the list of questions from @Lauren Wood - that's super useful! @Evelyn Kelly definitely keep us updated on what they tell you when you call tomorrow. It sounds like you have a strong case for getting this resolved since you're way past any reasonable timeframe. The stories from @Ian Armstrong and @Miguel Ramos give me hope that these situations can be fixed once you get the right person on the phone. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - this thread is way more helpful than anything on the official IRS website! 🙏

•Same here! My amended return just hit "Completed" status last week (January 28th, 2025) and after reading all these stories I'm already worried about the wait ahead 😅 It's crazy how inconsistent the processing times are after completion. @Victoria Stark your November completion date means you should definitely be calling soon too if you don t'get your check in the next few weeks. This whole thread has been a real eye-opener about what Completed "actually" means vs what we assume it means. @Evelyn Kelly please do update us tomorrow - sounds like you ve got'all the right questions ready thanks to everyone s advice!'

This thread is incredibly helpful for understanding what actually happens after the "Completed" status! I'm a newcomer here but dealing with a similar situation - my 2023 amended return shows "Completed" as of January 10th, 2025. Reading everyone's experiences, it's clear that "Completed" doesn't mean what most of us think it means. The range of wait times after completion is shocking - from 2-3 weeks to 3+ months! @Lauren Wood's professional insight about backend processing steps really explains why there's such inconsistency. It sounds like there are quality reviews, check printing queues, and mailing processes that happen after the "Completed" status. @Evelyn Kelly your situation at 3+ months past completion is definitely beyond normal delays. The specific questions @Lauren Wood provided are gold - definitely ask about the exact issue date, amount, mailing address, and any holds. @Ian Armstrong and @Miguel Ramos showing that reissued checks come quickly once you get the right person gives me hope these situations can be resolved. Thanks to everyone sharing their timelines and experiences. This community knowledge is way more valuable than the vague information on the official IRS tools! I'll be following this thread closely and will share my own experience as it develops.

•Welcome to the community @Lukas Fitzgerald! Your January 10th completion date is super recent so hopefully you won't have to wait as long as some of us have. It's honestly wild how much more useful this thread has been than anything official from the IRS. The fact that @Lauren Wood works in tax prep and confirmed there are all these hidden backend steps after Completed "status" really opened my eyes. I m'definitely saving those questions for when I inevitably have to call too. Keep us posted on your timeline - it ll'be interesting to see if the wait times are getting better or worse for more recent completions!

Reading through everyone's experiences here has been really eye-opening! I'm dealing with a similar situation - my 2023 amended return shows "Completed" as of December 3rd, 2024, so I'm about 2 months out now. Based on what everyone is sharing, it sounds like I'm getting close to the point where I should be concerned. @Lauren Wood's breakdown of the backend processing steps after "Completed" status is incredibly helpful - I had no idea there were quality reviews, check printing queues, and mailing processes that happen after that date. The questions you provided are exactly what I'll ask if I need to call. @Evelyn Kelly definitely call that number tomorrow with those specific questions! Your October completion date puts you way past any reasonable timeframe. The success stories from @Ian Armstrong and @Miguel Ramos show that once you get the right person on the phone, they can usually track down what happened and get a replacement check issued quickly. It's frustrating how the "Completed" status is so misleading - they really should be more transparent about what that actually means vs when people can expect their refunds. This thread has been more informative than anything on the official IRS website! Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences and timelines.
