First time checking state tax refund status - confused about reading my balance

Never checked my state tax refund status before and I'm completely lost. Looking at my account and seeing a number but cant tell if thats what I'm getting back or what I owe? Anyone know how to actually read these state tax portals? They're not very user friendly.

Without seeing your actual state's tax portal, its hard to give specific advice. Each state has their own system and displays information differently. Usually a negative number (-) means thats what youre getting back, while a positive number means you owe. Which state are you in? I can try to help navigate their specific system.

Im in California, the number shows $742 but no minus sign or anything

For CA, if you're looking at your account balance and its just showing $742, that's likely what you're getting back! 🎉

hey! instead of trying to decode these confusing state portals, you should try taxr.ai - its this new tool that reads your transcript and tells you exactly whats going on with both federal and state returns. Its only $1 and saves so much headache trying to figure this stuff out yourself. https://taxr.ai

The state websites are the WORST. I swear they make them confusing on purpose 🤡

Pro tip: screenshot everything! Some state portals are notorious for showing different info when you log back in later

Been doing taxes for 15 years and still sometimes get tripped up by state websites tbh. Your best bet is to either call them directly (prepare for a longgg wait) or use an automated transcript reader like taxr.ai - saves so much time trying to decode everything yourself
