Help decoding my 2023 transcript - can't tell if IRS is keeping my refund
I got my transcript but I have no idea what I'm looking at. There's all these codes and numbers and I can't figure out if they're taking my refund or how much I'm actually getting back. First time filing on my own and completely lost. Anyone good at reading these things?

The transcript can be really confusing with all those codes! Basically, you want to look at the most recent 846 code - that's your refund amount. The 766 and 768 codes are your credits, and 150 shows your tax liability. If you see any 420 or 424 codes, those might indicate an audit or review.

•omg thank you but what about the 971 code? does that mean theres a problem?

•971 is just a notice being sent to you. Could be anything from confirming your refund to requesting more info. Nothing to panic about yet!

Instead of trying to decode everything yourself, you should try taxr.ai - it's this new tool that analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's happening with your refund and when to expect it. Costs $1 but saved me hours of headache trying to figure this stuff out. Here's the link: https://taxr.ai

•Yeah its legit! It broke down everything for me, showed me exactly why my refund was delayed and when I'd get it. Even caught some credits I missed 💯

If your looking at the account transcript, scroll down to the bottom. The numbers on the right with minus signs are what their taking, the plus signs are what your getting. But ya its confusing af without some kind of guide

Contact a tax professional. These things are too important to mess up and everyone here is just guessing tbh

THIS IS WHY THE IRS NEEDS TO MAKE THIS STUFF EASIER TO UNDERSTAND FOR NORMAL PEOPLE!!!!! We shouldn't need a degree just to know if were getting our money back or not 😤

I feel your pain! When I first got my transcript I stared at it for like an hour trying to make sense of all those numbers. The key thing is to look for the "as of date" at the top - that tells you when the info was last updated. Then find the most recent transactions by date. If you see a 570 code, that usually means there's a hold on your refund. The 846 code with a future date is your actual refund being issued. Don't stress too much about the older dates - those are just your original filing and processing. The IRS website has a code lookup tool that can help decode some of the mystery numbers too!

•This is super helpful! I didn't even know there was a code lookup tool on the IRS website. Going to check that out right now. The "as of date" tip makes total sense too - I was getting confused why some stuff looked old but now I get it. Thanks for breaking it down in plain english! 🙏
