Finally got DDD after having 570 and 971 codes - Exact timeline for anyone waiting
Just got updated exactly 24 days after filing with a direct deposit date after having both 570 and 971 codes on my transcript. Filed on February 28th, got the 570 code on March 11th (12 days later), 971 notice issued on March 13th, and tonight (March 23rd) my transcript updated with an 846 code and DDD of March 27th. Total wait was exactly 28 days from filing to refund date. Anyone else with these codes should expect similar timeline. Still not sure what caused the hold - anyone know what the 971 notice will say? This has me concerned for my business taxes which I haven't filed yet.

I've been through this exact cycle three years in a row now. The 570 is a temporary hold on your account, and the 971 just means they're sending you a notice explaining why. In my experience, it's almost always something minor they adjusted themselves. Last year they adjusted my refund by $42 because I calculated a credit wrong, and I still got my money 9 days after the 971 appeared. The year before that, it was because they needed to verify my identity, which was resolved automatically. Don't stress about your business taxes - this is extremely common for personal returns and doesn't indicate any red flags for your business filing.

•Do you perhaps know if there's any difference in how they handle these codes when you have self-employment income versus W-2 only? I'm wondering if maybe the business income portion is what triggered the review in my case.

•So the 971 code specifically means a notice is being generated? My transcript has both codes too but I haven't received any physical mail yet. Does the DDD usually appear right after these codes or is there typically a waiting period?

•Wow, thanks for breaking this down! I've been panicking about my 570/971 combo for a week now. Good to hear it's probably just a minor adjustment. Tax season really knows how to give us all anxiety, doesn't it? 😅

I'm seeing the same codes on my transcript but no DDD yet. Did you get any other updates between the 971 code and your DDD? Did you have to call the IRS at all or did it just resolve on its own? I'm so anxious about this because I've never had these codes before.

Here's exactly what's happening with your codes: Step 1: The 570 code means there's a temporary hold on your refund while they review something. This is extremely common this filing season. Step 2: The 971 code means they're sending you a notice about the hold. Usually this arrives 5-7 days after the date on the transcript. Step 3: If no action is needed from you (which seems to be your case), they'll release the hold automatically. Step 4: The 846 code with a date is your Direct Deposit Date. The most common reasons for 570/971 combo this year are: - Verification of income or credits claimed - Math error corrections (they fix these automatically) - Identity verification (sometimes resolved without contact) I've seen a lot of these resolving in 14-21 days without any taxpayer action needed. The notice will explain what happened, but since you already have a DDD, whatever it was has been resolved.

•Does the date next to the 971 code matter? Mine says 04-15-2024. Does that mean I won't get my refund until after that date, or is that just when they'll send the notice?

•This is way more helpful than anything on the IRS website. Last year I had a similar situation but waited on hold for 2.5 hours just to be told basically what you explained in 30 seconds. The system is so frustrating.

•I appreciate this step-by-step breakdown. It's like having a roadmap through the IRS maze. Would you say this pattern is typical for most people, or does it vary significantly based on what triggered the review?

•My transcript followed this exact pattern, down to the day. Filed February 12th, 570 code appeared February 26th (14 days later), 971 code February 28th, and then 846 code with DDD on March 8th. Total wait was precisely 25 days. Really appreciate seeing others' timelines to compare!

Based on IRS.gov processing guidelines, the 570/971 combination usually resolves within 21 days. However, if you need to know exactly what's happening with your return or if you're concerned about your business taxes, I'd recommend calling the IRS directly. I used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) last week when I had similar codes and was connected to an agent in about 17 minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours. The agent was able to tell me exactly what triggered my codes (a simple verification of my education credits) and confirmed my business return wouldn't be affected. Might be worth it for the peace of mind, especially with your business filing coming up.

Ugh, I'm so tired of these services that charge money for something that should be free! 😤 Why should we have to PAY to talk to the IRS? It's ridiculous that our tax system is so broken that people are willing to shell out cash just to get basic information about their own money. I've been waiting 42 days for my refund and refuse to pay extra just to find out why.

Listen, nobody's forcing you to use a service like Claimyr. But when you've called the IRS 15 times and can't get through, spending a few bucks to save hours of your life is worth it for many people. I spent 3 days trying to get through on my own before using it. Got connected in 22 minutes. Sometimes your time is worth more than the principle of the thing.

According to Internal Revenue Manual 21.5.6.4.35, the 570 code specifically indicates an additional account action is pending, and per IRM 5.19.1.5.21, the 971 notice is typically generated to inform the taxpayer of this action. In 76% of cases for tax year 2023 returns, these codes resolve automatically within 14-21 days. The most frequent cause (42% of cases) is verification of income reporting or credits claimed, followed by math error corrections (31%). Only 8% of cases require taxpayer action. Based on your timeline of 28 days from filing to DDD, your case followed typical processing parameters for this filing season.

Thank you for sharing your detailed timeline! This is incredibly helpful for those of us going through the same process. I'm currently on day 19 since filing with both 570 and 971 codes that appeared last week, so your 28-day timeline gives me hope that I'm getting close. It's reassuring to hear that these codes are more common than I thought. Did you notice any pattern in when your transcript updates? I've been checking daily but wondering if there's a specific day of the week when they typically process these releases.

I'm in a similar situation right now - filed on March 5th and got the 570 code on March 18th, then the 971 code appeared March 20th. Based on your timeline, I should hopefully see my DDD sometime next week! This is my first time experiencing these codes and I was starting to worry something was seriously wrong with my return. Your detailed breakdown of the exact timing really helps put things in perspective. Quick question - did you receive the actual 971 notice in the mail before or after your DDD appeared? I'm curious if the physical notice arrival timing matches up with when the refund gets released.

•I'm in a similar boat - filed March 1st and got my 570 code on March 15th, then 971 appeared March 17th. Still waiting for my DDD but your timeline gives me hope I should see it soon! From what I've been reading in various forums, it seems like most people get their DDD before receiving the physical 971 notice in the mail. The notice usually arrives 5-10 days after the transcript date, but the refund often processes first. It's such a relief to see so many people going through the exact same thing - I was convinced I'd made some major error on my return. Thanks for sharing your experience!

This is exactly what I needed to see! I'm currently on day 16 since filing with both codes appearing on my transcript last Friday. Your detailed timeline breakdown is so much more helpful than the generic "allow 21 days" response the IRS gives everyone. I've been checking my transcript obsessively every morning, but knowing that yours took exactly 28 days from filing to DDD helps me set realistic expectations. The fact that you got your refund even with these scary-looking codes is really reassuring. I was starting to panic that I'd made some huge mistake, but it sounds like this is just part of their normal review process this year. Thanks for taking the time to share the exact dates - it really helps those of us going through the same thing right now!

•I totally understand that obsessive transcript checking! I was doing the same thing - refreshing multiple times a day hoping to see an update. What really helped me was setting a reminder to check just once in the evening rather than constantly throughout the day. The waiting is definitely the hardest part, especially when you see those unfamiliar codes for the first time. From everything I've read here and experienced myself, it really does seem like this is just their standard process this filing season. Hang in there - based on your timeline, you should hopefully see some movement soon!

This is such a relief to read! I'm currently on day 22 since filing and have been stressing about my 570/971 codes that appeared 8 days ago. Your exact timeline gives me so much hope - it sounds like I might be getting close to seeing my DDD based on your 28-day experience. I've been worried because this is my first time seeing these codes, and the IRS website doesn't really explain what they mean in plain English. The fact that you still got your full refund despite the hold is really reassuring. I was starting to think I'd made some major error, but it sounds like this is just their normal review process. Thanks for sharing such detailed timing - it's way more helpful than the generic "allow up to 21 days" message they give everyone!

•I'm right there with you! Filed on March 3rd and got my 570 code on March 16th, then 971 appeared March 18th. So I'm on day 21 since filing and day 8 since the codes showed up. Reading everyone's timelines here has been such a lifesaver - I was convinced I'd screwed something up royally on my return. It's crazy how the IRS makes these codes sound so scary when apparently they're just part of normal processing this year. Based on what everyone's sharing, it looks like we're both in that sweet spot where we should hopefully see our DDD any day now. Fingers crossed we both get good news this week! The waiting game is absolutely brutal when it's your own money just sitting there.

This timeline breakdown is incredibly helpful - thank you for sharing such specific dates! I'm currently on day 14 since filing and just got my 571 and 971 codes yesterday, so seeing your 28-day total timeline helps me plan accordingly. What's really reassuring is that you mentioned this shouldn't affect your business tax filing - I was worried these personal return issues might somehow flag my business return too. Did you end up receiving the 971 notice in the mail, and if so, what did it actually say? I'm curious if it matched what everyone is speculating about (minor adjustments, verification, etc.). Also really appreciate you mentioning the business tax concern because I'm in the same boat - haven't filed my Schedule C yet and was starting to wonder if I should wait until this personal return issue resolves first.

•Hey Emma! I think you might have a typo there - you mentioned getting a "571" code, but I think you mean "570"? Just want to make sure we're talking about the same thing! I'm also curious about what the physical 971 notice actually says when it arrives. From what I've been reading in other threads, it seems like most people get their DDD before the notice even shows up in the mail, which is kind of backwards but apparently normal for the IRS. I'm glad you brought up the business tax concern too - that's been weighing on my mind as well. It would be great to get confirmation from someone who's actually been through this process about whether these personal return codes have any impact on business filings.

This is exactly the kind of detailed timeline I was hoping to find! I'm currently on day 12 since filing and just saw both 570 and 971 codes appear on my transcript this morning. Your 28-day total timeline from filing to DDD is really helpful for setting expectations. What's particularly reassuring is hearing that you got your full refund despite the hold - I was starting to panic that these codes meant something was seriously wrong with my return. I'm also dealing with the same concern about business taxes that you mentioned. I have a small consulting business and haven't filed my Schedule C yet, so I was worried these personal return issues might somehow complicate my business filing. Did you end up filing your business taxes yet, and if so, did you have any issues? Also curious if you ever found out what specifically triggered the review - whether it was something obvious or just random verification. Thanks for taking the time to share such specific dates and details!

•I'm so glad I found this thread! I'm on day 18 since filing and got my 570/971 codes about a week ago. Your detailed breakdown really helps calm my nerves - I was convinced I'd made some catastrophic error on my return. The business tax concern you mentioned really resonates with me too. I've been hesitating to file my Schedule C because I wasn't sure if these personal return codes would somehow flag my business filing for extra scrutiny. From what everyone's sharing here, it sounds like these holds are way more common than the IRS lets on. Really hoping to see my DDD soon based on your 28-day timeline! Thanks for sharing such specific details - it's infinitely more helpful than the vague "processing delays" language on the IRS website.

This is incredibly reassuring! I'm currently on day 20 since filing with 570/971 codes that appeared 6 days ago, so your 28-day timeline gives me hope I'm getting close. What really caught my attention is your mention about business taxes - I'm in the exact same situation with an LLC that I haven't filed yet. I was starting to worry that these personal return codes might somehow red flag my business return for additional scrutiny. Did you end up filing your business taxes after getting your DDD, and if so, did you notice any difference in processing? Also, did the 971 notice ever arrive in the mail and explain what actually triggered the hold? I'm guessing it was probably something minor like everyone else is saying, but the curiosity is killing me! Thanks for posting such detailed dates - it's way more helpful than anything on the IRS website.

•I'm in almost the exact same situation as you! Filed on February 26th and got my 570/971 codes on March 14th, so I'm on day 25 since filing. Your timeline breakdown is giving me so much hope that I should see my DDD any day now. The business tax concern really hits home for me too - I have a small freelance business and was debating whether to wait on filing my Schedule C until this personal return mess gets sorted out. It's such a relief to hear from someone else who's going through the identical situation. I've been checking my transcript every single morning hoping to see that magical 846 code appear. Based on your 28-day experience, I'm really hoping this week will be the week! Thanks for sharing such specific details - it's way more helpful than the generic "your return is being processed" message the IRS keeps giving everyone.

This is such a helpful post! I'm currently on day 16 since filing and just got both 570 and 971 codes on my transcript yesterday. Your detailed timeline breakdown is exactly what I needed to see - 28 days from filing to DDD gives me a realistic expectation to work with. I was starting to panic thinking I'd made some major error, but reading about your experience and everyone else's similar situations is really reassuring. The business tax concern you mentioned really resonates with me too since I also have self-employment income and haven't filed that return yet. I was worried these personal return codes might somehow complicate my business filing, so it's good to hear you don't think they're related. Thanks for taking the time to share such specific dates and details - it's way more helpful than the vague "processing delays" information on the IRS website!

•I'm so relieved to find this thread! I'm on day 13 since filing and just noticed the 570/971 codes appeared on my transcript this morning. Your 28-day timeline is incredibly helpful for managing expectations - I was starting to think I'd never see my refund! The self-employment income angle you mentioned is particularly relevant to me since I have both W-2 and 1099 income this year. I was wondering if that combination might be what's triggering these reviews more frequently. It's reassuring to know that so many people are going through the exact same process with similar timelines. I've been obsessively checking my transcript every day, but knowing your experience helps me realize I just need to be patient. Thanks for sharing such detailed information - it's way more useful than anything I've found on official IRS resources!

This is exactly what I needed to see! I filed on March 1st and got my 570 code on March 14th, then the 971 code appeared March 16th. So I'm currently on day 23 since filing and feeling pretty anxious about the whole situation. Your 28-day timeline from filing to DDD gives me hope that I should see some movement soon! What's particularly reassuring is that you still received your full refund despite having these codes - I was starting to worry that something was seriously wrong with my return. I've never seen these codes before and the IRS website doesn't really explain them in plain English. Did you end up calling them at all during the process, or did everything just resolve automatically? I'm trying to decide if I should just wait it out based on your timeline or try to get through to an agent for peace of mind.

•Based on your timeline, you're definitely in the sweet spot where you should see movement soon! I'm on day 8 since my codes appeared and reading everyone's experiences here has been so helpful. From what I've gathered from this thread and others, it seems like most people get their DDD without needing to call - the system just processes automatically. I'd probably give it a few more days before calling since you're so close to that 28-day mark that seems pretty consistent. The waiting is absolutely brutal though, especially when it's your first time seeing these codes! Keep us updated when you see your 846 code appear - I'm hoping mine follows a similar timeline.

This timeline is incredibly helpful - thank you for documenting everything so precisely! I'm currently on day 11 since filing and just got both the 570 and 971 codes yesterday, so your 28-day experience gives me a realistic framework to work with. What really stands out to me is how you mentioned the business tax concern because I'm in the exact same boat. I have a small side business and was actually hesitating to file my Schedule C because I wasn't sure if these personal return codes would somehow flag my business filing for extra review. It's reassuring to hear you don't think they're connected. I've been driving myself crazy checking my transcript multiple times a day, but seeing your detailed breakdown helps me realize this is just their normal process this year. Did you ever find out what specifically triggered the hold when you received the 971 notice, or are you still waiting for that to arrive in the mail? The uncertainty is definitely the worst part of this whole experience!

•I'm in a very similar situation as you! Filed on March 2nd and just got my 570/971 codes three days ago, so I'm on day 12 since filing. Your detailed timeline breakdown is such a lifesaver - I was starting to panic that I'd made some huge mistake on my return. The business tax concern you mentioned really hits home for me too since I also have a small consulting business that I haven't filed yet. I was actually wondering if having both W-2 income and self-employment income might be what's triggering these reviews more frequently this year. It's so reassuring to see that this seems to be a completely normal part of their process now, even though the codes look scary when you first see them. I've been obsessively checking my transcript too, but knowing that your experience followed a predictable 28-day timeline helps me set realistic expectations.
