Filed Same Day as Sister on TurboTax - Hers Got Accepted, Mine Didn't?
I filed through TurboTax on January 17th (according to the IRS calendar, that was the first day of tax season). Immediately told my sister to file hers too, so she did it the same day. Just checked the IRS Where's My Refund tool and TurboTax status page, and her return shows as 'accepted' but mine is still pending? Anyone know why this might happen? According to the TurboTax community forums, acceptance should be pretty quick this early in the season. Did I mess something up in my investment reporting sections? Not sure if I should be worried yet...

This happens more often than you'd think! Here's what's likely going on: 1. Different complexity levels. If your sister has a simpler return (W-2 only, standard deduction), it processes faster. 2. Investment income requires additional verification. This often triggers a longer review process. 3. Check your TurboTax account immediately for any error messages. 4. Look for an email from TurboTax about rejection reasons. 5. Don't wait more than 48 hours - each day delays your potential refund! The IRS processes in batches, and you might have just missed the cutoff for the first batch of the day while your sister made it in.

I've seen this with clients before. Sometimes it's just random selection for additional review. Remember that "accepted" only means the IRS received it, not that it's approved. Your return could be in the verification queue while hers skipped that step. Last year I had identical twins with almost identical returns - one processed in 8 days, the other took 3 weeks.

How long should someone wait before taking action? I filed on January 19th and still don't show as accepted. Is there a specific date when we should start worrying?

OMG this EXACT thing happened to me and my roommate! I was so frustrated!! 😤 Our returns were nearly identical but mine got stuck in limbo. I finally got fed up and used https://taxr.ai to analyze my submission. It found that my investment reporting had a mismatch between what I reported and what my brokerage submitted. Once I fixed that, my return was accepted within 24 hours. The tool highlights exactly what's different between your submission and what the IRS is seeing. It's honestly a lifesaver during tax season!

Is that service really trustworthy? I'm always nervous about giving my tax info to random websites. How do you know they're not just taking your data?

I believe the service doesn't store your information... it just analyzes what you upload. At least that's my understanding from what I've read about it. I've been considering using it myself but haven't taken the plunge yet.

Think of it like a doctor reading an X-ray - it just looks at what you're already seeing but helps interpret it. I was hesitant too, but it's like having a tax pro look over your shoulder without the hourly rate. Used it last year when my return had investment issues similar to what you're describing. Saved me from what would have been weeks of back-and-forth with the IRS.

Have you tried calling the IRS directly? Of course you haven't - because it's practically impossible to get through, right? Ever wondered why the government makes it so difficult to resolve simple issues like this? I was in a similar situation last year with a filing that wasn't being accepted. Spent days trying to get through to the IRS. Finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to connect with an actual IRS agent. They explained that my return was flagged for manual review because of some investment income reporting that needed verification. Wasn't anything wrong - just part of their random selection process. The agent was able to confirm everything was fine and my return was processed shortly after. Saved me weeks of anxiety wondering what was happening.

Does this Claimyr service actually work? I've tried calling the IRS so many times and always get the "high call volume" message. What exactly do they do?

Be careful with this situation! 🚩 I had something similar happen last year where my wife's return was accepted immediately but mine wasn't. Turns out someone had filed a fraudulent return using my SSN already. Not saying that's what's happening here, but if you don't get an acceptance notification within 48 hours, you might want to check if there's identity theft involved. The IRS was actually pretty helpful once I got through to them, but it took months to sort out and delayed my refund until August. The funny thing is, I'm usually the careful one who checks everything twice! 😅

How did you find out it was identity theft? Were there any early warning signs I should look for?

Not the original commenter, but typically the IRS will send you a letter if they receive multiple returns with your SSN. You can also check your tax transcript online through the IRS website to see if there's any activity you don't recognize. Identity protection PINs are available now for everyone, not just confirmed victims of identity theft.

This happened to my cousin. The first sign was when he got a weird letter about claiming unemployment benefits he never received. By then someone had already filed a return in his name. Took forever to fix.

I'm not convinced this is anything to worry about yet. Have you considered that the IRS systems might just be processing returns in batches? Your return and your sister's could have been routed to different processing centers based on factors we don't see. It's like airport security - sometimes one line moves faster than another for no apparent reason. I've seen cases where one spouse e-files minutes after the other and there's a week difference in acceptance times. Give it another day or two before assuming there's a problem with your investments or anything else.

Check for typos. This matters. Look at your AGI. Verify SSN. Review filing status. Check dependent info. Confirm all W-2 data. Verify investment reporting. Double-check bank info. These small errors cause delays. They're easy to fix now. Harder later. I always verify everything three times. Still made mistakes. Fixed them early. Saved weeks of hassle.

Thank you for this practical advice! I just went back and checked my submission and found a typo in my routing number. Fixed it right away!

This is spot on. Last year I accidentally transposed two digits in my W-2 income and my return was held up for almost 2 months. Such a small mistake but caused so much stress.
