Filed 2/4/24 - WMR Changed to 'Still Processing' After 4 Days - Good Sign?
Well, I think I might have some potentially good news to share, though I'm not entirely sure. I filed this past Sunday (2/4/24), with what I would consider a fairly straightforward return - just a basic 1040 married filing status with standard deductions (nothing too complicated, I hope). The system accepted it almost immediately, which was somewhat reassuring, and the Where's My Refund tool changed to "processing" right away. However, this morning - just 4 days later - the WMR status updated to "still processing". In my experience (and I've been doing this for quite some time now), I've typically received my refund in the bank within days after seeing this "still processing" message appear. I should probably mention that for the last two tax seasons, my transcripts have remained completely blank, with WMR showing "still processing", yet my refund somehow managed to hit my bank account anyway. Does anyone know if this pattern is likely to continue this year? Is the quick change to "still processing" generally a positive sign? Should I perhaps be checking my transcripts daily despite previous years' experiences? I'm just trying to understand if the IRS process has changed at all for 2024 filing season.

I've seen this happen quite a few times, especially with straightforward returns like yours. The "still processing" message can actually be a good sign in many cases... it often means your return has moved past initial verification and into the final processing stage. From what I've observed, when transcripts remain blank but WMR shows "still processing," it sometimes indicates your return is taking a streamlined path through the system. I wouldn't worry too much at this point, especially given your history of quick deposits in previous years with the same pattern.

This is exactly the kind of insight that makes this community so valuable! Don't you think the IRS could save everyone a lot of anxiety if they just explained these status changes better? I've been telling people for years that "still processing" often means you're actually closer to getting your refund.

Completely agree with this assessment. From my experience: • Simple returns tend to follow this pattern • "Still processing" often appears right before refund approval • Blank transcripts don't necessarily indicate problems • The WMR tool updates less frequently than actual processing The system seems to be working as expected for your return.

Do you think there's any correlation between filing method (electronic vs paper) and how quickly returns move to the "still processing" stage? I've noticed electronic filers seem to get there faster, but I'm curious if that's just anecdotal.

This explanation is like finding water in a desert! It's like the IRS has two separate processing systems that don't always talk to each other - the transcript database and the WMR tool. Your return can be cruising down the refund highway while the paperwork is still catching up. I'm impressed by how clearly you explained this!

Have you considered checking your account transcript instead of your return transcript? As a first-time filer this year, I discovered that the account transcript sometimes updates with a TC 150 processing code and future refund date (cycle code) before anything appears on the return transcript. The TC 150 code indicates the return has been processed successfully and a refund date has been established. Many experienced filers on this subreddit recommend checking account transcripts daily during peak processing periods.

Oh my goodness, YES! This happened to me last year and I was freaking out! My return transcript showed absolutely nothing but my account transcript had all the codes and even my deposit date! I was checking the wrong transcript for two weeks and getting more anxious every day!

This is good advice. I've seen situations where the account transcript updates while the return transcript remains unavailable. It's similar to how some banks will show pending deposits before they officially post - there are multiple systems at work behind the scenes.

I really appreciate this suggestion. I probably should have mentioned that I've been checking both transcripts in previous years, and neither one updated before the refund arrived. But maybe this year will be different? I'll definitely keep an eye on both, just to be thorough. Thank you for taking the time to share this helpful tip!

According to the official IRS.gov processing guidelines, the "still processing" status generally indicates your return has passed the initial acceptance stage but requires additional review. However, based on the IRS2Go app forums and r/IRS discussions, many taxpayers with simple returns (like yours) are seeing quicker processing this year compared to the previous two filing seasons. The official IRS processing timeline still states 21 days for e-filed returns, but the IRS Operations Dashboard shows they're currently processing returns faster than anticipated for this point in the filing season. Have you checked if your return falls under PATH Act restrictions?

Thank you for this information! I don't believe my return would fall under PATH Act restrictions since we don't claim EITC or ACTC credits. Just a simple return with standard deduction. It's somewhat reassuring to hear that processing might be faster this year.

I'm also wondering - does the IRS Operations Dashboard give any specific timeframes for simple returns like mine? Or does it just provide general processing information?

I really appreciate you mentioning the IRS2Go app forums too. I hadn't thought to check there. Maybe I'll find some additional information from others in similar situations.

One more question if you don't mind - in your experience, is there any correlation between filing early (first week of February) and faster processing times? I've always tried to file as early as possible, but I'm not sure if that actually makes a difference.

If you're concerned about the status, I found a solution that worked perfectly for me. After waiting exactly 17 days with the same "still processing" message, I used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to get through to an IRS agent in about 22 minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours. The agent confirmed my return was approved but stuck in the final verification queue due to high volume. My refund was deposited exactly 3 days later. Sometimes you just need to speak directly with someone who can see what's actually happening with your return rather than relying on the vague online status.

I'm a bit hesitant about using third-party services. Have you had any issues with privacy or additional fees beyond what they initially advertise?

Did the IRS agent seem annoyed that you were calling about a return that was still within the normal processing window? I'm always worried about bothering them if it hasn't been at least 21 days.

No privacy issues at all - they don't access any of your tax info. They just connect you to the IRS phone line without the hold time. The fee was exactly what they stated upfront, no surprises. And the agent wasn't annoyed - they actually said it was helpful to know the online status wasn't updating correctly for some taxpayers. They can see much more detail than what shows on WMR.

That's interesting. If I don't see any movement in the next week or so, I might consider this option. I suppose it would be worth it just for the peace of mind of knowing exactly what's happening with my return. Thank you for sharing your experience!

Def think ur on the right track w/ this. IMO the WMR status changes are kinda meaningless tbh. I've tracked my refunds for the past 5 yrs and found zero correlation between status changes and actual DD dates. My process now: 1. Check bank acct daily instead of WMR 2. Look for pending deposits labeled "IRS TREAS" 3. Ignore transcripts completely since they're unreliable 4. Set up text alerts w/ my bank Last yr my WMR never updated from "still processing" but $ hit my acct exactly 9 days after filing. The system's backend processing and frontend status updates aren't in sync AT ALL.

I had almost the exact same situation last year! Filed a simple married return on Feb 2nd, saw "still processing" by Feb 6th, and my refund was direct deposited on Feb 10th without any transcript updates. The year before that was similar timing too. Based on my experience and what I've seen from others, that quick change to "still processing" is typically a very good sign for straightforward returns. I remember being so relieved when I checked my bank account and saw the deposit even though WMR hadn't updated. Sounds like you're right on track for a similar timeline this year!

Thank you so much for sharing this! It's very reassuring to hear from someone who had such a similar experience. I'll keep an eye on my bank account over the next few days. Fingers crossed for a similar timeline this year!

Quick follow-up question - did you receive any kind of notification when your refund was deposited, or did you just happen to check your account and notice it? I'm trying to decide if I need to set up alerts with my bank.
