Filed 1/23, 60 Day Review, Now They Need Documents - Faxed Bank Statements Today

I filed on January 23rd, 2024 and got put into 60 day review on February 13th. The review period ended exactly 60 days later on April 13th but still no update on my refund. Called the IRS yesterday and was told they needed additional documentation. I couldn't get my check stubs from my employer (they use a system that only keeps 3 months) so I got my bank statements showing the deposits and faxed all information in today - exactly 87 days after filing. Has anyone else had to provide additional documents? How many days did it take before you saw an update on your transcript or WMR after sending in the requested info?

I went through this last year around the same time. Had to provide additional documentation for my Earned Income Credit claim. In my experience, it took about 21 days after they received my faxed documents before I saw any movement. The key is making sure they actually received your fax - sometimes their fax systems get overloaded during tax season. I'd suggest calling again in about 5-7 days to confirm receipt if you don't see any updates on your transcript.

The IRS document verification process is like a black hole where your papers go in but feedback rarely comes out. I had a similar situation where I faxed documents and waited 4 weeks with no confirmation. It's like sending a message in a bottle across the ocean - you hope someone finds it but have no way to track it. I eventually had to send a second set through certified mail to be sure.

This happened to me last tax season! I had to provide additional verification for my dependents. I faxed my documents on March 15th and didn't hear anything for 32 days. Then suddenly on April 17th my transcript updated with an 846 code and I got my deposit 3 days later. The worst part was never knowing if they actually received my fax or if it was sitting in a pile somewhere. I was worried sick about it the whole time.

Bank statements are good. Should be sufficient. IRS often requests pay stubs. They verify income reporting. Document review takes time. Usually 2-3 weeks minimum. Sometimes longer. I'd recommend checking your transcript with taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai). It decodes all those confusing codes. Shows exactly where you are in the process. Tells you what each code means for your specific situation. Helped me understand my 60-day review last year.

Is this service really accurate? I'm nervous about using third-party tools with my tax information. How does it actually work? Does it just read the codes or does it actually predict when you'll get your refund?

Used it myself last mth when stuck in review. It doesn't ask for SSN or anything personal - just reads the codes on ur transcript that u upload. Basically translates IRS-speak into normal language. Helped me figure out I was in manual review bc of a math error the IRS found. Saved me tons of anxiety!

Thank you for sharing this resource! I've been recommending taxr.ai to clients who get confused by their transcripts. The IRS website provides the raw data, but most people don't understand what the cycle codes and transaction dates actually mean for their specific situation. It's particularly helpful for wage verification cases like this one.

According to IRS Publication 3498-A, the Examination Process, once additional documentation is received, the standard processing time is approximately 30 days. However, during peak processing periods (which we are currently in), this can extend to 45-60 days. The bank statements you provided should be sufficient as they're explicitly mentioned in IRC §6001 as acceptable proof of income when primary documentation isn't available.

Wow! I had no idea there were actual published guidelines for this stuff! I always thought it was just random how long they took. I've been stressing about my review for weeks not knowing there were actual timeframes they're supposed to follow. This is super helpful!

I went through this exact situation on April 2nd, 2023. The bank statements were accepted without issue, but it still took them until May 11th to process everything. The agent told me they're severely backlogged this year compared to last, so the published guidelines might not apply perfectly.

I'm in almost the exact same boat as you, except I had to provide proof of dependents instead of income verification. I waited on hold for 3 hours trying to confirm they received my fax and never got through. My sister recommended Claimyr (https://claimyr.com/?ref=reddit) and I got connected to an IRS agent in about 15 minutes. They confirmed my documents were received and being processed. Compared to the 3+ hours I wasted before, it was absolutely worth it.

Isn't that just paying for something that should be free? The IRS should have better phone systems. I'm hesitant to pay for a service when the government should provide basic customer service.

How much does Claimyr cost? And did they actually help resolve anything or just connect you to an agent? I've been trying to get through for days but keep getting the 'high call volume' message.

Have you checked your account transcript online since sending the documents? Sometimes you'll see activity there before WMR updates. Any codes like 571 (reversal of previous hold) or 290 (additional assessment) would indicate they're actively working on your return.

This is exactly right. When I was under review last year, my transcript updated with a 971 code (notice issued) three days after I faxed my documents, then a 571 code about two weeks later. WMR didn't update until after the 846 (refund issued) code appeared. The transcripts are definitely the better source of information.

Just to clarify - you can check your transcript every day through the IRS website. Go to IRS.gov, click 'Get Transcript Online' and look at your 2023 Account Transcript. The codes will be on the right side with dates. Even if your return is still processing, you might see activity codes that show they received your documents.

I had to send in documents twice. First time they said they never received them. Second time I used a cover sheet with my name, tax year, and social clearly marked. Got an update 16 days later. Make sure you kept a copy of the fax confirmation page. You might need it if they claim they never received anything.

Been through this twice in the last three years. Here's what to expect: • Document processing: 2-3 weeks minimum • Verification completion: Another 1-2 weeks • Refund approval: 3-5 days after verification • Actual deposit: 2-5 days after approval So realistically, you're looking at about a month from fax to deposit. My first experience took exactly 27 days. Last year it took 34 days. The good news is that bank statements are usually sufficient proof of income. Just breathe and try not to check WMR more than once a day! 😊
