Filed Jan 31st - No Updates on Transcripts or WMR After 45 Days

According to IRS Publication 1345, e-filed returns should be processed within 21 days. I submitted on January 31st and we're now approaching 45 days with zero movement. Per IRC 6402(a), the IRS is required to process refunds in a timely manner. No updates on WMR or transcripts despite multiple checks. I need this resolved before Q1 estimated tax payment deadline. Anyone experiencing similar delays?

You're in what I like to call the 'IRS black hole' - but don't panic yet! This filing season has been particularly backed up with processing delays. The 21-day guideline is more of a goal than a guarantee (shocking, I know). Your return is likely sitting in one of several verification queues. Since you filed early in the season, you might have hit the PATH Act verification period if you claimed EITC or ACTC. Alternatively, identity verification holds are very common this year.

Is there any way to find out if I'm in a specific verification queue? I'm worried my return might have been flagged for some reason, but I'm not sure how to confirm this without speaking to someone directly...

According to the IRS Operations page (https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-operations), they're still working through a backlog. You can also check your account online at IRS.gov/account which sometimes shows information that WMR doesn't. The transcript codes are especially helpful - TC 152 means it's processing normally.

Thank you for this explanation! Makes me feel better. Was starting to think my return disappeared into thin air.

I experienced similar delays with my 1040 filing. The IRS API status remained unchanged for 37 days before suddenly updating to "approved." My transcript showed a TC 570 hold that was released with a subsequent TC 571. I'm slightly worried about these extended processing timeframes becoming the new normal.

I was in the exact same boat last year! Filed January 28th and nothing updated until March 15th. What worked for me was checking my transcript instead of WMR - the transcript updated first with a 570 code (hold) then a 571 (release) a week later. Try requesting your transcript online if you haven't already - sometimes it shows processing activity even when WMR shows nothing.

Did you have to do anything special to get your return moving again? I'm going crazy waiting and wondering if I should be more proactive!! Did calling help at all?

Transcripts don't always show pending information. I've seen plenty of cases where nothing appears until the return is fully processed. Don't get your hopes up too much.

According to Internal Revenue Manual 21.4.1, taxpayers should allow the full 21 days before inquiring about refund status. Have you verified that your return was actually accepted and not just transmitted? There is a distinction per IRS guidelines.

Ugh this is happening to SO many ppl rn. IRS is being super slow this yr. I filed Feb 1st and just got my DDD yesterday. My transcripts were N/A until last Fri when everything updated at once. My advice: stop checking WMR daily, it'll drive u crazy. The system is just backed up af and there's nothing we can do but wait. Sux when u need the $ tho.

Have you tried calling the IRS directly? I know it sounds impossible, but I used Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) last week and got through to an agent in about 25 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. Worth the fee when you consider how much time you save. The agent was able to tell me exactly why my refund was delayed (simple verification) and when to expect it. Sometimes you just need to speak to a human, right?

This situation is like trying to find your luggage at the airport when the tracking system is down - you know it's there somewhere, but nobody can tell you where. The IRS backlog this year is like a traffic jam that started in January and hasn't cleared up yet. Have you considered checking if your state return is also delayed? Sometimes when federal returns get stuck, it's like a domino effect with state processing too. I'm concerned that with tax deadline approaching, more returns will flood in and potentially push yours even further back in line.

I tracked exactly 43 days from filing to refund deposit last year after filing on January 29th. This year, I'm at day 47 with no updates. I've seen patterns where the IRS processes returns in batches - especially for early filers. From what I've observed in this community, returns filed between January 29th and February 3rd are starting to see movement this week. Hang in there - I understand how frustrating the wait can be when you're planning your finances around your expected refund.

Watch out for verification holds! Early-season returns often get extra scrutiny. • Check if you claimed EITC or CTC - PATH Act delays are automatic • Verify your income reporting matches all W-2s/1099s received by IRS • Look for ID verification letters (CP01H) which may have been sent • Make sure your bank info was entered correctly Last year I had a similar situation and discovered a verification hold was placed automatically because I had changed addresses. The most frustrating part was that they never notified me!
