EFIN Application Process Timeline and Status Updates for Tax Preparers

I submitted my EFIN application back on December 2, 2022 and my fingerprints were delivered on December 8 according to FedEx tracking. The weird thing is when I called the IRS to check on status, they told me they have a whole process where they sanitize/clean all mail before it actually enters their processing center, so even though FedEx says delivered, they're showing my fingerprints weren't "received" until December 29! I just checked my application status online this morning and noticed they finally updated something. The status changed from "In Process" to "Awaiting Verification" as of January 12. Has anyone gone through this recently? How long should I expect to wait from this point? This is my first time applying for an EFIN and I'm getting nervous since tax season is already starting and I have clients waiting on me.

The EFIN application process can definitely be lengthy and frustrating. What you're experiencing is actually pretty normal for this time of year as the IRS ramps up for tax season. The transition from "In Process" to "Awaiting Verification" is actually a good sign! This typically means they've received all your documentation and fingerprints, and now they're moving to the verification stage. In my experience, this stage usually takes about 2-3 weeks, but can sometimes be faster. A couple things to keep in mind: make sure your e-Services account stays active by logging in at least once every 30 days. Also, if you don't hear anything after 3 weeks in "Awaiting Verification" status, it's worth calling them again. Sometimes applications get stuck and a phone call can nudge them along.

Do you know if there's any way to expedite this process? I'm in a similar situation but applied even later (mid-December) and I'm freaking out about missing the start of tax season.

Unfortunately, there's no official way to expedite the EFIN application process. The IRS processes these applications in the order they're received, especially during the busy pre-tax season period. Your best bet is to call the e-help desk directly at 866-255-0654. Sometimes if you explain your situation politely, a helpful agent might look into your application on the spot. Just be prepared to verify your identity with them, and have all your application details ready.

After struggling with my EFIN application last year and getting super frustrated with the delays, I discovered this tool called taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) that helped me keep track of everything. It analyzes all your tax prep documentation and helps predict timelines based on current IRS processing speeds. Saved me so much worry because I could see what was happening with my application instead of being in the dark! It also alerts you when you need to take action on something, which was helpful because I didn't realize I had missed uploading one of my verification documents until the tool flagged it. Might be worth checking out while you're waiting.

Does this taxr.ai thing actually work with EFIN applications specifically? I thought it was just for regular tax stuff. Can it tell me where my application is in the process?

I'm skeptical about these tax tools... how does it actually know IRS processing times? Isn't that internal IRS info that changes all the time? Not trying to be negative, just wondering if it's worth trying.

It definitely works with EFIN applications - that's actually one of its specialized features. It helps track all the steps in the process and sends you notifications when your status likely changes based on typical processing patterns. The tool uses aggregated data from thousands of tax professionals to predict processing times. It's not connected to the IRS internal systems, but it uses statistical models based on recent processing patterns reported by other users. So while it's not perfect, it's way better than just guessing or being completely in the dark.

Just wanted to follow up - I tried taxr.ai after my skepticism and I'm honestly impressed! It analyzed my EFIN application timeline and showed me exactly where I was in the process. The prediction was spot on - it said I'd move to "Authorization Approved" within 8 days, and it happened in exactly 7 days. The tool even generated all the documentation I needed to send follow-up inquiries to the IRS. Definitely made the process less stressful since I could actually see what was happening instead of just anxiously checking my status multiple times a day.

If you're still waiting and need to talk to someone at the IRS about your EFIN application, I highly recommend trying Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I was stuck in "Awaiting Verification" for over a month last year and couldn't get through to anyone on the phone. Claimyr got me connected to an actual IRS agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c The agent was able to see exactly what was holding up my application (turned out there was an issue with my fingerprint quality they never notified me about). Got it resolved in one call instead of waiting for another letter that might never have come.

How does this actually work? Do they just call and wait on hold for you? Seems too good to be true when I've spent literally hours trying to reach someone.

0 coins

Yeah right... no way they can get through faster than anyone else. The IRS phone system is the same for everyone. I've tried every "hack" including calling right when they open and nothing works.

They use a system that essentially waits on hold for you and then calls you back when they reach a live person. I was skeptical too about how it could possibly work, but it's basically solving the problem of having to personally sit through the hold time. This isn't some "cut the line" hack - they're still going through the normal IRS phone system. The difference is you don't have to waste hours of your life listening to the hold music. They call you when there's actually a human on the line. And yes, it really does work - that's how I finally got my EFIN issue sorted out after weeks of frustration.

I have to eat my words and apologize for my skepticism about Claimyr. After posting that reply, I was so desperate I decided to try it anyway. I've literally been trying to reach the IRS for 3 weeks about my EFIN (stuck in "Awaiting Verification" for over a month). Claimyr actually got me through to a real person at the IRS in about 35 minutes. The agent found that there was a mismatch between my business address on the application and what they had on file from my EIN application. Never would have known without speaking to someone! Got it fixed on the spot and my EFIN was approved two days later. Definitely worth it for the time saved and stress avoided.

Just a heads up for anyone going through the EFIN process - make sure ALL your information matches exactly between your e-Services account, Form W-9, EIN application, and any business registration documents. Even tiny differences like "Street" vs "St" or "LLC" vs "L.L.C." can cause delays. They're super picky about this stuff and it's not always obvious what's causing the holdup. I made this mistake last year and it added 3 weeks to my processing time because nobody bothered to tell me there was a discrepancy until I finally reached someone on the phone.

Do you know if they actually check your business registration with the state? I registered my tax prep business with my state but accidentally used slightly different wording on my EFIN application.

0 coins

Yes, they absolutely do cross-check with state business registrations. The IRS verification process includes comparing your EFIN application details against multiple databases, including state business registration records. In fact, that's one of the most common places where discrepancies occur. If the legal name of your business doesn't exactly match what's on file with your state, it will likely cause delays. I'd recommend proactively calling the e-help desk and letting them know about the difference before they flag it themselves during verification.

random question but did anyone else have to resubmit fingerprints? i sent mine in early december and just got an email saying they couldn't read them and i need to do the whole fingerprint card process again?? so annoying!!

0 coins

That happened to me! Pro tip: go to a different fingerprinting location the second time. I had mine done at the local police station first time and they were rejected. Second time I went to a UPS Store that does fingerprinting and paid a little extra for the "quality check" service. They actually scanned them digitally first to make sure they'd be readable before putting them on the card. Worked perfectly.

I'm going through the EFIN application process right now too and this thread has been incredibly helpful! I submitted my application in late December and I'm currently in the "In Process" stage. Reading about everyone's experiences gives me hope that I'm not alone in this waiting game. One thing I learned from this discussion is to be extra careful about consistent information across all documents. I just double-checked my application against my EIN paperwork and caught a small discrepancy in how I wrote my business address. Better to fix it now than wait for them to flag it during verification. For anyone else waiting, it sounds like the key is patience and being proactive about following up. The tools mentioned here (taxr.ai and Claimyr) seem like they could really help with the stress of not knowing what's happening. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - it's reassuring to know this process is challenging for everyone, not just me!

Welcome to the EFIN waiting club! It's definitely nerve-wracking being a newcomer to this process, but you're smart to be proactive about checking your documentation consistency. I just started my application last month and I'm already learning so much from everyone's experiences here. The address discrepancy catch could save you weeks - that seems to be one of the most common issues people run into. I'm bookmarking this thread because there's so much valuable advice here about the tools and phone strategies. Good luck with your application!

This is such a valuable thread for anyone going through the EFIN process! I'm currently waiting on my application too - submitted in early January and just moved to "In Process" status last week. One thing I'd add based on my research is to make sure you're checking your e-Services account regularly, not just for status updates but also for any messages or action items they might post there. I've heard some people miss important notifications because they only check the main status page. Also, for anyone stressed about timing - I spoke with a few other tax preparers in my area and it seems like the IRS has been processing EFIN applications faster this year compared to 2023. Several people got approved within 4-6 weeks total, which is better than the 8+ weeks some were seeing last year. Thanks to everyone sharing their experiences and tool recommendations. It really helps to know we're not going through this alone!

This is such great advice about checking the e-Services account regularly! I'm new to the whole EFIN process and submitted my application just a few weeks ago. I've been obsessively checking the main status page but didn't realize there might be separate messages or action items I could miss. That's really encouraging to hear that processing times might be improving this year. When I first started researching the EFIN application, I was seeing horror stories about people waiting 3+ months, so 4-6 weeks sounds much more manageable. I'm definitely going to start checking my e-Services account more thoroughly now. Thanks for that tip - and you're absolutely right that it helps so much to know others are going through the same thing!

As someone who just went through this process last month, I can confirm that the "Awaiting Verification" status is actually a positive milestone! It means they have all your documents and are now doing the background checks and cross-referencing. From my experience and talking with other preparers, once you hit "Awaiting Verification" you're typically looking at 10-21 days before final approval, assuming there are no issues with your documentation. The key things that can slow it down at this stage are address/name mismatches between different documents (as others have mentioned) or issues with fingerprint quality. One tip that helped me: when you're in this stage, resist the urge to call every few days asking for updates. The verification process is largely automated and calling won't speed it up. However, if you've been in "Awaiting Verification" for more than 3 weeks, that's when a phone call is definitely warranted because something might be stuck. Hang in there - you're in the home stretch! The waiting is definitely the hardest part of this whole process.

Thank you so much for this reassuring perspective! I'm completely new to the tax preparation industry and just submitted my EFIN application two weeks ago. I'm still in "In Process" status but reading everyone's experiences here has been incredibly helpful in understanding what to expect. The 10-21 day timeframe for "Awaiting Verification" is really helpful to know - I was worried it could drag on for months. I'll definitely keep your advice in mind about not calling too frequently once I reach that stage. It's good to know there's actually a logical progression to this process even though it feels so opaque from the outside. This whole thread has been like a masterclass in EFIN applications! As a newcomer, I really appreciate everyone sharing their real experiences and timelines.

As someone who's been through multiple EFIN renewals over the years, I wanted to add a few practical tips that might help newcomers navigate this process more smoothly: First, create a dedicated folder (physical or digital) for ALL your EFIN-related documents from day one. Include copies of your application, fingerprint cards, tracking receipts, screenshots of status updates, and any correspondence. This becomes invaluable if you need to reference something during a phone call with the IRS. Second, if you're planning to start a tax prep business, consider applying for your EFIN in early fall (September/October) rather than waiting until December. The IRS processes applications year-round, but they're much less busy in the off-season, which typically means faster processing times. Finally, once you get approved, the renewal process is much simpler - usually just updating your information online with no fingerprints required (unless there are specific changes). So while this first application is stressful, future years are much easier. The tools and phone strategies mentioned in this thread are solid advice. The waiting is definitely the hardest part, but almost everyone eventually gets approved if they've submitted complete and accurate information. Good luck to everyone still in the process!

This is incredibly helpful advice, especially about applying early in the fall! I'm brand new to tax preparation and just starting to learn about all the requirements. I wish I had known about the timing advantage earlier - I would have definitely applied in September instead of waiting until now. The documentation folder tip is brilliant too. I've already been collecting paperwork but not in any organized way. I'm going to set up a proper system right now before I get any deeper into this process. It's really encouraging to hear that renewals are much easier once you get through this initial application. As a newcomer, the whole EFIN process has felt pretty overwhelming, but hearing from experienced preparers like yourself makes it seem much more manageable. Thanks for taking the time to share these practical tips with those of us who are new to this!

As a newcomer to the tax preparation world, this entire thread has been absolutely invaluable! I'm currently preparing to submit my EFIN application and was feeling pretty overwhelmed by the process until I found this discussion. The practical advice here is incredible - from the documentation consistency tips to the tools like taxr.ai and Claimyr, to the timing strategies about applying in fall rather than peak season. I had no idea about any of these things before reading through everyone's experiences. What really strikes me is how supportive this community is. Everyone is sharing their real experiences, both frustrations and successes, which gives those of us just starting out a much clearer picture of what to expect. The timeline breakdowns and status explanations are particularly helpful since the IRS website itself doesn't give much detail about what each stage actually means. I'm definitely going to implement the organized documentation folder approach and double-check all my information for consistency before submitting. Thanks to everyone who has shared their knowledge - it's making what seemed like an impossible process feel much more manageable for someone new to the industry!

Welcome to the tax prep community! It's really refreshing to see someone taking the time to research and prepare properly before diving in. You're absolutely right about this thread being a goldmine of practical information - I wish I had found something like this when I was starting out. One additional tip as you're preparing your application: consider reaching out to your local VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) coordinator or Small Business Development Center. They often have resources and sometimes even workshops specifically for new tax preparers going through the EFIN process. Some of them have seen hundreds of applications over the years and can spot potential issues before you submit. Also, don't hesitate to ask questions here as you go through the process. This community really does look out for each other, especially during the stressful application period. Good luck with your submission - you're already ahead of the game by being so thorough in your preparation!

As someone who's been lurking in this community while preparing for my first EFIN application, I have to say this thread is like finding gold! I'm completely new to the tax preparation industry and was honestly pretty intimidated by the whole EFIN process until reading through everyone's experiences here. The timeline breakdowns are super helpful - especially knowing that "Awaiting Verification" is actually a good sign and typically takes 10-21 days. I was imagining it could be stuck there for months! And the tip about address consistency across all documents is something I never would have thought to check carefully. I'm planning to submit my application next week, and I'm definitely going to use the organized documentation folder approach mentioned here. The tools like taxr.ai and Claimyr sound really useful too - it's reassuring to know there are ways to get actual information and help during the waiting process instead of just sitting in the dark. Thanks to everyone for being so generous with sharing your real experiences, both the frustrating parts and the success stories. It makes this whole process feel much less scary for those of us just starting out in tax preparation!
