Navigating the EFIN Application Process - Timeline for Approval?
Hey tax community, I'm really getting stressed about my EFIN application timeframe and hoping someone can shed some light. I submitted my application back on January 5th, 2022 and my fingerprints were delivered on January 10th according to FedEx tracking. However, when I called to follow up, the representative told me they have this weird process where they "sanitize" all mail before it enters their facility, so even though FedEx shows delivered on the 10th, the IRS has it logged as received on January 26th instead! I've been checking my application status obsessively online and as of today (February 14th), they've updated my status on the website from "Fingerprints Pending" to "In Process" - which I guess is progress? But tax season is already underway and I'm starting to panic about whether I'll get approved in time to file for clients. Anyone have recent experience with how long the EFIN application process is taking right now? I'm a first-time applicant if that matters. Any insights would be super appreciated!

When you calculate the value of your time spent on hold versus the cost, it made sense for me.

Just a tip from someone who went through this last year - make sure all your contact information is correct in your e-Services profile AND your EFIN application. My application was delayed because they tried to call me for verification but had my old phone number. Also, if your status has been "In Process" for more than 30 days, something might be wrong. In my case, they needed additional documentation but the letter got lost in the mail. I only found out when I finally reached someone by phone.

In my experience, the portal updates sometimes came before email notifications, and a couple of times I never received an email at all despite status changes. The IRS system sends emails from different addresses depending on which part of the process you're in, and sometimes they can end up in spam folders. So I recommend checking your e-Services account at least once a day and setting up any IRS email domains as safe senders in your email program.
