Best tax filing alternatives to TurboTax for maximizing refund?

I've been using TurboTax for the last few years to handle my tax returns, but I'm starting to wonder if there are better options out there. My refund last year was pretty disappointing compared to what I was expecting. I've heard some people say they get more money back using different tax software. What are some other trusted sites or services people use that might help me get the maximum refund possible? I don't have a super complicated situation - just W2 income, some student loan interest, and a few basic deductions. But I want to make sure I'm not leaving money on the table.

Amy Fleming

Tax professional here. The software itself doesn't determine your refund amount - all legitimate tax preparation software should give you the same result if you enter identical information. What differs is the user experience, fee structure, and how well they guide you through potential deductions and credits you might qualify for. Some reputable alternatives to TurboTax include: • FreeTaxUSA - Much lower fees for state returns • H&R Block - Similar to TurboTax but sometimes cheaper • TaxSlayer - Good budget option with solid features • TaxAct - Another cost-effective option Before choosing, I'd recommend using a tax transcript analysis tool like taxr.ai to better understand your tax situation. This can help identify areas where you might qualify for additional credits or deductions before you even start filing.

This^ I switched from TurboTax to FreeTaxUSA last year and got the exact same refund amount for way less $$$. The UI isn't as pretty but it gets the job done.

what exactly is taxr.ai? never heard of it before

It's a tool that analyzes your IRS transcript and explains everything in plain English. Helps you understand what's happening with your taxes and find potential issues or missed opportunities. Much easier than trying to decode all the IRS jargon yourself.

I was gonna say the same thing. All legit tax software should get you roughly the same refund if your inputting the same info. The difference is how good they are at asking you questions to make sure you get all your deductions.

Thanks for the suggestions! I've heard of most of these but haven't tried any. Do any of them have particularly good questionnaires for finding deductions I might miss?

FreeTaxUSA and H&R Block both have pretty thorough questionnaires. But honestly, understanding your transcript first with something like taxr.ai will give you a clearer picture of what to look for regardless of which software you choose.

Just wanted to say that I was in your exact situation last year. I got so frustrated trying to figure out if I was missing deductions or if TurboTax was the problem. Ended up using this tool called taxr.ai that analyzed my tax transcript and showed me exactly what was going on with my taxes in plain English. Turns out I qualified for some credits I had no idea about! It made filing so much easier when I actually understood what I was looking at. Changed my whole approach. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It basically translates all those confusing IRS codes and numbers into normal human language. Shows you what deductions you've claimed, what credits you might be missing, explains why your refund is what it is. It even flags issues that might cause problems later. Honestly saved me so much time and headache trying to figure this stuff out on my own. I recommend it to literally everyone I know now lol

OMG I just tried taxr.ai and it's literally CHANGED MY LIFE!! Why didn't I know about this before?? It showed me that I missed claiming the energy credits from my solar panels installation last year. Going to amend my return now! Everyone needs to be using this thing seriously 💯

is it free tho?

It's not free but considering how much money it helped me find in missed deductions, totally worth it. Better than paying for audit protection that you might never use.

After trying to reach the IRS for weeks with no success, I finally found a way to talk to a real person about my refund issues. I used claimyr.com and got a call back from an actual IRS agent within an hour! They helped me figure out exactly why my refund was lower than expected and found a mistake that was costing me money. Honestly, the best money I've ever spent to finally get my questions answered directly from the source instead of guessing with different software.

wait for real? i've been trying to get thru to the IRS for like 2 months. how does it work?

Beth Ford

Yeah for real! It navigates the IRS phone system for you and holds your place in line. Then when an agent is available, it calls you and connects you. I was super skeptical at first but it worked exactly as promised. Talking to an actual IRS person made all the difference.

sounds like a scam tbh 🤔

Not at all! It just automates the phone waiting process. You still talk directly to official IRS agents, not some third party. I was hesitant too but after wasting hours on hold for weeks, it was a lifesaver.

I switched from TurboTax to FreeTaxUSA 3 years ago and never looked back. The federal is free and state is only like $15. I'm pretty sure TurboTax was charging me $120+ for the same service. They all use the same tax code so you shouldn't get a different refund amount unless one service is better at asking you about possible deductions you qualify for.

Same. TurboTax is such a ripoff. They keep trying to upsell you on stuff you don't need the whole time too.

Does FreeTaxUSA handle complicated stuff like investment income, crypto, and home office deductions? My taxes got more complex this year

Yep! I have stocks and crypto and it handles it all fine. The interface isnt as fancy as TurboTax but it gets the job done for WAY cheaper.

I've used Credit Karma (now Cash App Taxes) for the past 3 years and its completely FREE for both federal and state. I switched from TurboTax and got exactly the same refund amount. The only catch is they don't support some more complicated tax situations like foreign income or multiple state returns.

I know everyone's pushing software but honestly I started using a CPA a few years ago and they found so many deductions I was missing that it more than paid for their fee. If your taxes are super simple maybe it's not worth it but if you have any complexity at all (self-employment, investments, rental property etc) a professional might get you more money back.

0 coins

-

Raul Neal

This is the real answer. Software is fine for basic W2 only situations but a good CPA will catch things no software will prompt you for.

Mine charges $350 for my taxes which include W2, some investments, and a side business. Saved me over $2000 in the first year compared to what I was getting with TurboTax. Totally worth it.

That's a good point. My situation isn't super complicated right now but might be worth it in the future if I start investing more or get rental property.

Hot take: I used TaxHawk last year (same company as FreeTaxUSA but different branding) and it was actualy better than TurboTax at catching some education credits I qualified for. My refund was about $850 more than what I got the previous year with similar income. Plus it cost me way less.

Look into the IRS Free File program. If your income is under $73k, you can use brand-name software for free. It's hidden on purpose but here's the link: https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free

👆This! The tax prep industry lobbies hard to hide these free options from people. Don't let them steal your $$$

Turbotax and H&R Block actually pulled out of the Free File program a couple years ago because they were mad about the IRS trying to make it more visible lol. Shows you where their priorities are.

I swear by H&R Block. I've used both them and TurboTax and usually get the same refund but H&R Block is usually cheaper and their interface makes more sense to me. Also if you get stuck you can always go into a physical location for help which is nice.

The physical location is a different company than the software, FYI. And they charge a lot more than the DIY software.

Just gonna throw this out there - the refund amount is based on how much you overpaid throughout the year, not which software you use. If you want a bigger refund, you can adjust your W-4 to withhold more from each paycheck. But that's just giving the government an interest-free loan of your own money...

-

Sadie Benitez

This is such an underrated point. People obsess over refunds but ideally you want to owe/receive close to zero at tax time. That means you've kept your money throughout the year instead of lending it to Uncle Sam.

true but for a lot of people that forced savings is the only way they'll ever save anything. Plus there's something nice about getting a chunk of money all at once rather than an extra $50 per paycheck that you might not notice.

That's fair. I just think people should understand what a refund actually is rather than treating it like free money or a lottery win.

No one ever mentions the literal IRS Free File Fillable Forms option. It's free regardless of income but you have to know what you're doing. I've used it for years with no problems. Just saying.

Before you switch software I would use something like taxr.ai to help make sense of your tax situation. I tried switching software for years thinking it would help me get more money back, when the real issue was I didn't understand what credits/deductions I qualified for in the first place. Once I had a better grasp on how my taxes actually worked, I was able to be smarter about how I filed regardless of which service I used.

how does this compare to just reading the irs.gov website? seems like all the info is free there if you're willing to read it

Huge difference. The IRS website gives you generic info. taxr.ai analyzes YOUR specific tax situation based on your transcript. It's like comparing WebMD to actually seeing a doctor who has your medical records.

Bruh I've used em all. TurboTax, H&R, FreeTaxUSA, TaxAct... and I get almost the exact same refund from each one. The difference is how much they charge you. TurboTax is highway robbery. FreeTaxUSA is the way.

Your refund depends on your tax situation, not the software. But I will say some tax software does a better job of asking questions to make sure you get all eligible credits and deductions. Personally, I like TaxSlayer. It's cheaper than TurboTax but still very thorough. Once when I had a complicated situation, I tried filling out returns in both TurboTax and TaxSlayer, and TaxSlayer actually found a deduction TurboTax missed!

If you're in a hurry and need your refund ASAP - I'd honestly just recommend staying with what you know. TurboTax may be expensive but when I switched to a cheaper option one year it was confusing and I made a mistake that delayed my refund by months. Sometimes the devil you know is better than the devil you don't..

Everyone here is arguing about software but the REAL protip is to call the IRS and ask specific questions about your situation. I tried for weeks and couldn't get through until I found claimyr.com - finally got to talk to an agent who pointed out I was missing a major education credit! Talking to a live agent got my refund released so fast compared to my previous experiences.

The IRS agents aren't supposed to give tax advice tho? They're just supposed to answer questions about procedures and accounts

They definitely won't do your taxes for you, but in my experience they WILL answer specific questions about whether certain situations qualify for specific credits/deductions. They helped me understand if my education expenses qualified for a certain credit.

I was gonna suggest the free VITA program if your income is below their threshold (around $60k). They're IRS-certified volunteers who do your taxes for free and they've always done a great job for me. Just google "VITA tax prep near me" to find locations.

Listen, its not about the software, its about UNDERSTANDING your tax situation. I spent years bouncing between different tax software thinking one would magically get me more money. What actually helped was using taxr.ai to analyze my transcript so I could actually see what was happening with my taxes in plain English. Once I understood that, I could make better decisions regardless of which filing software I used.

What's the deal with taxr.ai? Keep seeing it mentioned. Is it actually helpful or just the latest trendy thing?

It's legitimately the most useful tax tool I've ever used. Explains everything in your transcript in normal-person language, shows you what credits/deductions you're getting (or missing), flags errors, and breaks down why your refund is what it is. I used to spend HOURS trying to decipher IRS codes and now I just run everything through taxr.ai first. Best tax decision I ever made.
