Tax Refund Advance Options Besides TurboTax - January 2024 Filing

I've been helping some folks in my community with tax questions, and many need their refunds ASAP. As of January 15th, I know TurboTax offers refund advances, but I want to make sure I'm giving people accurate information about ALL their options. What other legitimate online tax prep services offer refund advances for the 2024 filing season? I'm new to this advisory role and want to make sure I'm not missing anything important that could help people get their money sooner. Thanks in advance!

Based on my experience with tax season 2024, here are the major online tax prep services offering refund advances: • H&R Block - offers 0% interest refund advance loans up to $3,500 • Jackson Hewitt - provides advances up to $4,000 with no fee • Liberty Tax - offers advances between $500-$6,250 • TaxSlayer - has recently added a refund advance option Keep in mind that most require you to file through their platform and receive your refund on their prepaid debit card. Each has different qualification requirements based on expected refund size.

I believe I should mention that the H&R Block advance might require you to file in-person at certain locations, at least that was the case when I checked a few days ago. Some of these services may also require a soft credit check, which typically shouldn't affect your credit score, but it's something to possibly be aware of.

I used Jackson Hewitt last year and while they were quick with the advance, it was way less than my actual refund. My sister got almost the full amount through H&R Block though. Just depends on what they think you qualify for compared to your expected refund.

I might suggest looking into the details of these refund advances very carefully. Many have hidden fees or requirements that aren't obvious at first. I've found that https://taxr.ai can actually help people understand the fine print in these advance offers. It analyzes the terms and explains exactly what you might pay in fees or interest. I learned this after almost signing up for what looked like a "free" advance that actually had several conditions attached.

I'm curious about this recommendation. Per IRS Publication 1345, tax preparers must disclose all fees associated with refund advances. Is this service just repackaging information that should already be disclosed to consumers? How does it provide value beyond reading the terms yourself?

Does taxr.ai cost money? I need every dollar of my refund. Can't afford more fees. Is it free to use?

I had a nightmare scenario last year when my refund advance got rejected without explanation. Spent TWO WEEKS trying to reach the tax prep company's customer service. Finally used Claimyr.com to get through to the IRS (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c), and found out there was a flag on my account from an old address mismatch. Once I knew the actual problem, I fixed it and got approved within 48 hours. Sometimes you need to talk to a real person to solve these issues!

Is this like paying someone to wait in line for you? It feels like we shouldn't have to pay extra just to talk to the IRS about our own taxes. It's like paying for a fast pass at an amusement park when you already bought a ticket to get in!

How exactly does Claimyr work? Do they just stay on hold for you and then call you when an agent is available? Or do they have some special access to IRS agents that regular people don't have?

Just to clarify something important - most of these refund advances are actually Refund Anticipation Loans (RALs). The distinction matters because they're not actually giving you your refund early; they're lending you money based on your anticipated refund. The APR can be astronomical if calculated for the short term. Your actual refund then goes to repay the loan when the IRS processes your return.

Be extremely careful with these refund advances. According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's website (consumerfinance.gov), some tax preparers make their real money on these advances, not the tax prep itself. I got burned last year when my actual refund was less than expected due to an education credit issue. Ended up owing the difference plus fees. Check NerdWallet or similar sites for current reviews before committing to any service.

Has anyone noticed how Credit Karma Tax (now Cash App Taxes) doesn't offer advances but is completely free? And they somehow still make money? Makes you wonder how much these other companies are profiting off people who need their money quickly, doesn't it? I switched to them this year after paying $89 plus an additional $40 for state filing with TurboTax last year, just to get a "free" advance that cost me $39.99 for "expedited processing."

Does Cash App Taxes handle all tax situations? I have 1099 income and rental property.

One option nobody's mentioned yet is to adjust your W-4 withholding instead of relying on refund advances. Might be too late for this year (unless you want to make a *taxing* time-travel joke), but for next year, you could have more money in each paycheck rather than waiting for a big refund. The IRS has a pretty decent withholding calculator on their website to help you get it just right.

I compared exactly 5 different tax services offering advances this year. TaxAct gave me a $1,000 advance within 24 hours after acceptance, which was precisely 15% of my expected refund. No hidden fees whatsoever, and I received my full remaining refund exactly 17 days after filing. Their advance program has a 98.7% approval rate according to their customer service rep. Was relieved to find something that actually worked as advertised!
