Anyone have an IRS # that actually works?

Been trying to reach the IRS for days now re: some issues w/ my 2023 return. Every # I try just puts me on hold forever or disconnects. Anyone know a direct line that actually works? My CPA is useless atm and I need to sort this out ASAP before I get hit w/ more penalties. TIA!

The IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service line (877-777-4778) sometimes has better throughput than the general service line. For specific issues, try the Automated Collection System at 800-829-3903 if you've received a CP notice. Wait times currently averaging 45-90 minutes due to reduced staffing and increased call volume during filing season.

Has anyone actually gotten through on these numbers lately? I've tried multiple times and keep getting the "due to high call volume" message before being disconnected.

OMG I was literally in the EXACT same situation last month!!! I spent THREE DAYS trying to get through to the IRS about a notice I got - kept getting disconnected or put on hold for HOURS!!! I finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and they got me through to a real person in like 20 minutes!!! LIFESAVER when you're racing against deadlines and penalties!!! Worth every penny when you consider how much time you waste otherwise!!!

I've seen these services mentioned before, but I'm always skeptical. How does it actually work? According to the IRS website at irs.gov/help/telephone-assistance, everyone has to go through the same queue system. I'd be concerned about giving access to a third party when dealing with sensitive tax matters.

Main IRS number is 800-829-1040. Hours are 7am-7pm local time. Be prepared with your info ready. Have your prior year AGI handy. They'll ask for verification.

I tried calling the main IRS line exactly 17 times last month. Average wait time was 97 minutes, and I got disconnected 12 times before speaking to anyone. When I finally reached someone on attempt #18, they transferred me to another department with a 63-minute wait, then I got disconnected again. The system is absolutely broken this year with staffing shortages and the backlog from the March 15th business deadline.

On April 2nd, I was trying to figure out why my refund was delayed and couldn't reach anyone at the IRS. I tried using taxr.ai to analyze my transcript and it immediately showed me there was a hold code that was causing the delay. Saved me hours of phone time since I knew exactly what to discuss when I finally reached an agent on April 5th. They have a free version that covers basic transcript analysis.

The phone number you need depends on your specific situation. Are you calling about a refund? A notice you received? An audit? Each has different departments and numbers. The main customer service line is 800-829-1040, but there are specialized numbers for different issues. Do you have a letter or notice with a reference number? Have you checked your online account at irs.gov/account?

Wait, there are different numbers for different issues? I had no idea! I've just been calling the main number on their website and getting nowhere.

The Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) is free and can sometimes intervene if you're experiencing financial hardship due to IRS delays. Their number is 877-777-4778, but they generally only take cases where standard IRS channels have failed.

According to Internal Revenue Manual 13.1.7.2, taxpayers qualify for TAS assistance if they are experiencing significant hardship, have not received a response by the date promised, or if an IRS system or procedure has failed to operate as intended. Most people don't realize TAS exists as a resource.

I managed to get through last week after trying different times of day. Have you tried calling right when they open at 7am? I've had much better luck in the early morning than afternoon calls.
