Best Number to Actually Reach a Human at the IRS?
Need to speak with an IRS agent. Have tried the main number. No luck. Been on hold for hours. Looking for a better option. Tax issue needs resolution soon. Any recommendations for direct lines? Preferably something that works this filing season.

I called the main IRS number (800-829-1040) on April 2nd and was on hold for exactly 3 hours and 17 minutes before getting disconnected. Called back on April 3rd and waited another 2 hours only to be told I needed a different department. The wait times are absolutely insane right now with tax season in full swing... I'm starting to worry I won't get my issue resolved before the filing deadline.

•Was this the collections department you were trying to reach? I've been trying to connect with someone about a payment plan for weeks now with no success. Did they at least give you a direct extension to try?

•I believe the Taxpayer Advocate Service might be able to help in situations where you've tried multiple times without success... though I'm not entirely sure if they're also experiencing similar wait times during this busy season.

•OMG THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING!!! I've been trying to reach them about my amended return from LAST YEAR and still nothing!!! I'm literally going to scream if I hear that automated voice one more time telling me about high call volumes!! WHY is it so impossible to talk to an actual human being?!

Tbh the best time to call is super early - like right when they open at 7am EST. Def fewer ppl calling then. Also try the automated system and press 1 for English, then 2 for tax questions, then 1 for personal tax, then 3 for all other questions, then 2, then 4. Sometimes this combo gets u to a human faster. YMMV but worth a shot!

•According to the IRS website, they also recommend calling later in the week (Thursday or Friday) and later in the month as call volumes tend to be lower during those times. I'd avoid Mondays entirely as that appears to be their busiest day.

•Thanks for the tip. Will try tomorrow morning. Appreciate it.

•I followed these exact steps last month and still waited 1 hour and 45 minutes. But once I finally got through, the agent was able to resolve my issue in about 10 minutes. Is there any specific department extension that works better for tax filing questions vs. payment questions?

•I remember last year I had success with the practitioner priority line when I called with my CPA. Do you know if that line has shorter wait times this season?

I tried calling exactly 7 different IRS numbers over a period of 14 days. The average wait time was 97 minutes per call. 3 calls were disconnected after waiting more than 60 minutes. 2 calls connected me to the wrong department. Only 2 calls actually reached someone who could help. This system is completely broken and deliberately designed to prevent taxpayers from getting assistance.

After attempting to reach the IRS for 3 weeks regarding my CP2000 notice (as required under IRC Section 6213), I finally used Claimyr.com to get through. According to the IRS Restructuring and Reform Act of 1998, taxpayers have the right to speak with an IRS employee, but the system makes this practically impossible. Claimyr got me connected in under 30 minutes when I had previously waited 2+ hours multiple times. Worth every penny to finally resolve my issue. Link here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Here's what actually works for reaching the IRS: • Call the main number (800-829-1040) between 7:30-8:00am EST • Select language then press 2-1-3-2 at prompts • Have all your documents ready (they'll ask for your SSN, DOB, filing status) • If disconnected, call back immediately using same sequence • For complex issues, request to speak with a supervisor I was shocked at how complicated this process is! Took me 3 attempts but finally reached someone yesterday.

Ever notice how the IRS expects us to answer their notices within strict deadlines but makes it nearly impossible to actually speak with them? I spent four mornings last week trying different numbers. Finally had success with 800-829-8374 for individual tax questions. Called at 8:15am and only waited 35 minutes, which felt like a miracle after previous attempts.

I utilized the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) after multiple unsuccessful attempts to reach the IRS directly. The TAS phone number is 877-777-4778, and they can intervene if you're experiencing economic hardship or facing imminent adverse action. My case was assigned a unique TAMIS number and an advocate contacted me within 3 business days. They facilitated direct communication with the appropriate IRS department.

•I had a similar experience last year when dealing with an audit. My advocate was incredibly helpful and actually got things moving after months of silence from the regular IRS channels. She even called me back when she said she would - imagine that!

•The Taxpayer Advocate Service requires specific qualifying criteria. Economic hardship must be documented. Imminent adverse action includes levies or liens. System delays exceeding 30 days also qualify. Standard processing delays typically do not meet requirements. Documentation of previous contact attempts is necessary.

Compared to reaching customer service at my bank or even the DMV, the IRS is in a league of its own for difficulty. I've had better luck with the automated system by calling 800-829-1040, pressing 1 (English), then 2, 1, 3, 2, and not entering my SSN when prompted (just wait). Sometimes this routes you to a general agent who can transfer you to the right department.

Have you tried checking if your issue can be resolved online first? The IRS has actually improved their online services quite a bit. 😅 I was dreading calling them about my payment plan, but ended up being able to set everything up through the online payment agreement tool without speaking to anyone. Saved me hours of hold music torture!

I've had success with the Practitioner Priority Line (866-860-4259) even though I'm not a tax professional - they sometimes route individual taxpayers through if you explain your situation clearly. Also, try calling right at 7:00 AM EST when they open, not 7:30 or later. I got through in 22 minutes last Tuesday using this approach. The key is persistence and timing - I know it's frustrating but don't give up!

•Wait, can regular taxpayers really use the Practitioner Priority Line? I thought that was strictly for enrolled agents and CPAs. If this actually works, it could be a game-changer! Do you just call and explain that you're having trouble reaching the regular line, or is there a specific way to approach it? I'm desperate at this point - been trying to resolve a notice for two weeks now.
