What's the Official IRS Phone Number? Need to Call ASAP!
I've been trying to reach the IRS for exactly 3 days now and I keep finding different numbers online. I've called 4 different numbers already and waited on hold for a total of 237 minutes only to be disconnected or told I called the wrong department! I need to resolve an issue with my tax return from my first year working remotely and I'm getting really frustrated. Can someone PLEASE share the correct number to call? I need to speak with an actual human being!

The main IRS customer service number is 800-829-1040. According to the IRS.gov website, they're currently open Monday through Friday, 7am to 7pm local time. You can also find specific department numbers at https://www.irs.gov/help/telephone-assistance if you have a particular issue like tax collections or business taxes. Wait times are typically 30-45 minutes during tax season.

Don't waste your time with the main number right now. Call the Taxpayer Advocate Service instead at 877-777-4778. They can often help resolve issues faster than going through regular channels, especially if you've been trying multiple times without success.

Has anyone actually had success with the Taxpayer Advocate recently? I tried them last month for a similar situation and they told me they were only taking cases with extreme hardship. Is that still the case or have things improved?

I was in your exact situation last month! Here's what worked for me: 1. Call exactly at 7:01am Eastern Time (they open at 7) 2. When the automated system asks why you're calling, say "Payment" 3. Then when it asks for more details say "Agent" 4. If they ask for your SSN, enter it 5. You'll still wait, but I only waited 23 minutes this way The afternoon wait times were consistently 2+ hours when I tried, but morning calls were much better. Don't give up!

OMG the IRS phone system is THE WORST!!! I spent 3 days trying to get through last week and kept getting disconnected after waiting forever! š” Finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and they got me connected to an agent in about 15 minutes. Seriously saved my sanity! They basically wait on hold for you and call you when they get an agent. Worth every penny when you're on a deadline and can't spend all day redialing!

I'm skeptical about these third-party services. How do they actually work? Do they just use some kind of auto-dialer system that normal people don't have access to? Seems like the IRS should fix their phone system instead of making us pay extra just to talk to them.

Omg thank you for this! š I was about to lose my mind with the constant disconnects. Just looked it up and it's actually pretty reasonable considering I've already wasted like 6 hours of my life on hold. Gonna try this tomorrow!

Per Internal Revenue Manual 21.1.1.3, the IRS maintains different toll-free numbers based on the specific tax issue. For individual tax return questions: 800-829-1040. For business tax questions: 800-829-4933. For tax form requests: 800-829-3676. For refund status: 800-829-1954. According to IRC Ā§6511, you have 3 years from the filing date to resolve most issues, so document all contact attempts for your records in case you need to establish a good faith effort to resolve the matter.

I really appreciate this detailed breakdown! I've been calling the general number for weeks about my business taxes. Will try the specific business line tomorrow morning. This is extremely helpful.

Quick clarification - when calling the business tax line, do you need your EIN ready? And do they verify identity differently than on the individual line? Just want to make sure I have everything prepared before calling.

I called that business number last month about a 1099 issue. They asked for my SSN and EIN, plus verification questions like my address and filing status. The agent was actually super helpful once I got through! Took about 45 minutes on hold, but way better than the 2+ hours I spent on the general line the week before.

Are you trying to resolve a specific issue with your return? Some problems can actually be handled online without calling. What exactly are you trying to fix with your remote work situation?

Whatever u do, DO NOT call the collections dept by mistake! Made that error last yr & somehow ended up flagging my acct for review. Took 4 mnths to clear up & delayed my refund. Double check any # before calling. Also, don't call on Monday or Friday - those r their busiest days. Tues-Thurs mid-morning (10-11am) has worked best for me over the yrs.
