Anyone Else Filed in January with CTC/EIC and Still No Movement?

My friend is going crazy right now. She filed on January 31st with both Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Credit, and there's been zero movement. TurboTax shows her return was accepted and approved weeks ago, but her transcripts show no codes at all and say no return has been filed. She called TurboTax yesterday who just told her there are no issues and it "hasn't been processed yet." Like, no kidding. Anyone else stuck in this situation from January filings? She's a single mom and really counting on that money.

This is unfortunately pretty common with EITC/CTC returns this year. Here's what's likely happening: 1. Her return was ACCEPTED by the IRS (this just means they received it) 2. Due to the PATH Act, returns with these credits are held until at least Feb 15th 3. After Feb 15th, they enter the verification queue 4. This year, verification is taking 8-10 weeks for many filers The transcript showing "no return filed" is normal during this phase. It doesn't update until they actually begin processing it. I filed Jan 29th with similar credits and mine just started moving last week.

Thanks for breaking it down. Helpful. My return has same issue. Frustrating wait.

This is actually super helpful to know! I was picturing my return sitting in some digital trash can somewhere, lol. At least there's a process even if it's moving at the speed of a three-legged turtle.

Oh my god THANK YOU for explaining this!! I've been so worried and stressed about my return. Filed January 25th and nothing has updated. I've been checking every single day and getting more anxious each time. This makes me feel so much better knowing it's not just me!

This is like when you're waiting for a table at a popular restaurant. They take your name, but you're not actually in line until they put you in their system. I waited 11 weeks last year with the same credits. It's like watching paint dry, except the paint is your money and the wall is the IRS computer system from 1985.

Has your friend verified whether she can access her 2023 Account Transcript or just the Return Transcript? There's a difference. The Account Transcript will show if the IRS has received the return but hasn't begun processing. Also, exactly how many weeks has it been since January 31st? We're at approximately 9 weeks now, which is within normal processing time for returns with EITC/CTC during peak season. The IRS is currently reporting 42-49 days for returns with these credits, but in reality, many are taking 56-70 days.

This is an excellent point about the different transcript types. Many people don't realize they need to check the Account Transcript specifically to see early processing indicators.

I had this exact issue last year. My Return Transcript showed N/A for weeks while my Account Transcript had codes 570/971. Make sure she's checking the right transcript type - it makes a huge difference in understanding where things stand. I was panicking unnecessarily because I was looking at the wrong one.

Did your friend receive any notices in the mail? Sometimes the IRS sends verification letters for the credits that don't show up on transcripts right away. I had clients last year who got identity verification letters weeks before anything showed on transcripts.

I was in the same boat last year - filed January 28th with both credits and my transcript showed nothing until mid-March. The worst part was trying to get through to the IRS to confirm nothing was wrong. After 14 attempts and hours of hold music, I discovered Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). They got me connected to an actual IRS agent in about 20 minutes who confirmed my return was just in the verification queue. Worth the fee just to stop the anxiety of not knowing if something was wrong. The agent told me returns with both credits were taking 8-10 weeks minimum last year, and it sounds like this year is similar.

The PATH Act is hitting hard this year. I filed on January 24th with CTC and my transcript finally updated on March 18th. That's 7 weeks and 5 days of nothing. According to the IRS operations dashboard updated on March 29th, they've only processed 79% of individual returns received, which is about 8% behind where they were this time last year. I've been tracking this data for the past three tax seasons, and this is definitely one of the slower processing years, especially for credit-claiming returns.

I've been filing with these credits for 5 years now, and I've learned to just expect delays. Last year I filed January 28th and didn't get my refund until April 2nd. The year before was March 24th. It's frustrating but predictable at this point.

When you say your transcript updated, do you mean it showed codes or you actually got a DDD (direct deposit date)? I'm trying to understand the timeline better.

Has your friend checked if she's able to access her tax records online through the IRS website? Some people don't realize you need to create an account first, and the verification process can be strict. Also, did she receive an email confirmation from TurboTax with an acceptance date from the IRS (not just TurboTax)?

Did she file electronically through TurboTax or did she print and mail it in? That makes a huge difference in processing time.

Has she tried calling the IRS directly? Sometimes that's the only way to get real answers about what's happening.

Did she check if her bank information was entered correctly? Sometimes returns get held up because of incorrect direct deposit info.

These are really good questions. I never thought to verify the actual IRS acceptance date versus the TurboTax submission date.

I had EXACTLY this situation - filed January 30th with both credits. Transcripts showed nothing for 8 weeks straight. Then suddenly on March 25th, everything updated at once and I had my refund on March 28th. No explanation, no issues, it just took that long. Tell your friend to hang in there! Has she tried using the Where's My Refund tool daily? Does it still say "return received" or has it changed at all?

Did you have to do anything special to make it update, or did it just happen on its own?

This gives me hope! I'm in week 7 of waiting and was starting to think something was seriously wrong.

Isn't it crazy how we file as early as possible to get our refunds quickly, but then end up waiting longer than people who file in March? I'm in the same boat - filed January 29th with CTC/EIC and still nothing. My transcript says N/A for 2023. What's the point of the February 15th PATH Act date if they're still going to make us wait until April? Why even accept returns in January if they're not going to look at them until March?

I was in your friend's exact situation last year - filed January 28th with both credits. Nothing happened until March 23rd, then suddenly my transcript updated, WMR changed to approved, and I had my money 3 days later. This year I filed February 15th instead, and I already got my refund last week. From comparing with others in my tax groups, it seems like January filers with credits are actually waiting longer than mid-February filers. The system is definitely not first-come-first-served!
