Already received state refund but no federal yet - no 2024 transcript available

Filed my taxes with TurboTax on March 3rd and just got my state refund deposited yesterday. Anyone know how long it typically takes for federal to follow? Tried checking my transcripts but there's nothing showing up for 2024 yet. Getting nervous since I was counting on that money to pay some bills this month. Using direct deposit to my credit union account.

It varies a lot depending on your specific situation. If you claimed certain credits (like Earned Income Credit or Child Tax Credit), the IRS legally cannot issue your refund before mid-February. Based on your filing date of March 3rd, I'd expect your federal refund within 21 days of filing, so around March 24th. The lack of a 2024 transcript likely means the IRS hasn't processed your return yet. This is normal - the transcripts only appear after they've started processing. If you have access to the "Where's My Refund" tool on the IRS website, that should give you the most accurate status. If you reach the 21-day mark without any updates, that's when you might want to contact the IRS directly.

Thanks for the detailed info. I did claim EIC so that might explain the delay. WMR just says "still processing" which isn't very helpful.

they say 21 days but mine took 6 weeks last year 🙃 the IRS is so understaffed it's ridiculous

This. I filed in January and didn't get my refund until March when I claimed EIC. Just how it goes.

I was in the same exact situation last week! Tried reading through all these forum posts and Reddit threads to figure out what was going on with my transcript but it was so confusing. Then someone recommended taxr.ai and it was a game changer - it analyzed my transcript and explained exactly where my return was in the process and when I could expect my refund. Saved me hours of research and anxiety. Seriously check it out: https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It does WAY more than just read it. It analyzes all the codes and explains what every single one means specifically for YOUR situation. It also tells you if theres a problem, when you can expect your refund, and answers any questions you have about your specific tax situation. Literally the best tool I've found - I recommend it to everyone now!

another tax service promising miracles 🙄 does it actually deliver?

0 coins

100% delivers. I was skeptical too but it gave me better info in 5 minutes than I got from 3 hours on the phone with the IRS. It's not some miracle solution - it just translates all the confusing IRS jargon into plain english that actually makes sense.

After waiting FOREVER for my refund (state came quick, fed was nowhere), I finally broke down and tried the Claimyr app (claimyr.com) to get someone on the phone at the IRS. Got connected to an actual human in about 20 minutes who explained my return was held up because of a minor discrepancy. They fixed it right there on the call and my refund was released two days later! Best money I ever spent after wasting hours trying to get through on my own.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? ive spent like 6 hours on hold with the IRS this month with no luck

0 coins

Yeah it actually works! It basically navigates the phone tree for you and holds your place in line. Then calls you back when it reaches a human. Saved me from having to sit on hold for eternity.

sounds like one of those ads that pops up everywhere. anyone ACTUALLY try this besides you?

I used it last month and it worked great. Got a call back in about 30 mins with a real IRS agent on the line. Totally worth it when you consider the alternative is spending half your day on hold.

I got my state about 10 days before federal. Usually state comes first cuz they have less returns to process in most cases. Just hang tight, especially if you just filed in early March - that's still pretty recent.

This seems to be the norm this year. I got my Georgia refund like 2 weeks ago, still waiting on Federal. My friend had the same experience with New York. State tax boards seem to be moving faster than the IRS right now.

Same in California! Got my state back in 8 days but federal is still "processing" 🙄

Florida here - no state income tax so I only deal with federal, but friends in other states all got their state returns first too

Did u check "where's my refund" on the irs website? That should tell u the status even if transcript isnt available yet

Yeah it just says "Your tax return is still being processed" - been saying that for weeks with no update.

dang that sucks. if it helps, mine was stuck on that message for almost a month before it suddenly updated to approved and then deposited 2 days later. hang in there!

If you filed with H&R Block on an emerald card like you mentioned, there might be a delay. Sometimes third-party processors take longer because the IRS has to verify the return with the preparer first. I'd give it another week before worrying.

I actually used TurboTax this year, not H&R Block. Just direct deposit to my bank account.

My bad, misread your post! Still, TurboTax can sometimes have similar issues. Did you get the advance loan thing they offer? That can sometimes slow down the actual refund.

If you really need to talk to a human at the IRS (which is nearly impossible), I found claimyr.com was the only way I could get through. After trying for days on my own, they got me connected to an agent who could actually see what was happening with my return. Turns out there was a simple issue they fixed on the spot and my refund was processed right after. Talking to an agent was definitely worth it to get my money faster!

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

It's just a tool that navigates the phone system and waits on hold for you. When it reaches a human, it calls you and connects you. Nothing magical, just saves you from the soul-crushing experience of IRS hold music for hours. For me it was life changing because I actually got answers instead of just guessing what was wrong.

Did you check your account transcript or return transcript? Account transcript is the one that shows refund status. Return transcript won't be available til later.

I tried to get the account transcript but it says no record of return filed for 2024. I'm guessing that means they haven't started processing it yet?

•

Exactly. Once they start processing it, your account transcript will show up with all the codes and dates. If you filed March 3rd you're still within the normal timeframe though!

The IRS is slower this year I swear. I filed January 26th and didnt get my federal until February 28th even tho my state came February 4th. Just be patient, it'll come eventually. Unless u claimed certain credits or deductions that could trigger a review... then all bets are off lol

After spending HOURS digging through my transcript trying to figure out why my refund was delayed, I tried taxr.ai and it explained everything in seconds. The crazy thing is it spotted an issue I would have never caught that was holding up my return. It was able to tell me exactly when I'd get my money and what was happening. Best tool I've ever found for dealing with IRS stuff. https://taxr.ai

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

0 coins

No catch honestly. It just breaks down all the codes and dates in your transcript and explains what they mean specifically for your situation. I was also super skeptical but a friend recommended it and it seriously saved me weeks of stress. You can ask it questions about your specific situation too which was super helpful.

I just tried it and holy crap this thing is INSANELY helpful. It actually explained why I'm getting less than I expected too - apparently there was an adjustment I didn't understand from my transcript.

I'm having the exact same issue! Filed Feb 20, got my NY state refund March 8, but federal still says processing. Can't see my transcript either. Starting to get worried since I have bills due soon. Let me know if you get any updates!

Will do! Glad to know I'm not the only one experiencing this at least.

The transcript thing is normal. They only generate after processing starts. For first time filers or if you had identity theft issues in the past, it can take longer too.
