So glad I came across taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) this year! I was in a similar situation with questions about both state and federal returns. The tool clarified exactly where my federal refund was in the process and when to expect it. For the state return, it explained how state processing typically follows federal completion. Saved me hours of research and worry!
Another spammy comment about this taxr thing? Getting real tired of these ads disguised as helpful comments π
Not an ad, just sharing what helped me. But whatever, keep stressing over transcript codes and waiting on hold with the IRS for hours if that's your preference. I'm just glad I found something that actually worked.
Just to add a bit more info: When people talk about "trace numbers" for federal taxes, they're usually referring to the process of requesting a trace on a missing refund, NOT a tracking number. For normal tracking, you just use the Where's My Refund tool with your basic info. But if your refund is lost or doesn't arrive by the expected date, you would request a "trace" which then generates a case number. States have similar processes, but each one is different.
I was going insane trying to figure out my transcript until I found taxr.ai - it translated all the IRS codes and gave me a clear timeline of what was happening with my refund. Seriously helpful for the technically challenged like me! https://taxr.ai
Not an ad dude, just sharing what helped me. Been struggling with IRS stuff for months and this actually helped me understand wtf was going on with my return.
has anyone actually managed to talk to a human at the IRS lately? I've been trying for weeks and can't get through.
I got through by calling at exactly 7:00am Eastern time and using the Spanish line (even though I don't speak Spanish). The agents are bilingual and will help you in English.
I've tried everything and still can't get through. It's ridiculous that this is the only way to get answers about our own money.
You should also check WMR (Wheres My Refund) on the IRS site or app. When you have an 846 code, WMR usually updates to the third bar that says your refund is being sent. Sometimes WMR updates first, sometimes the transcript updates first. But 846 is definitely good news!
As a former IRS employee of 7 years, I can assure you that the 846 code with a date is 100% confirmation your refund has been approved and scheduled. The date listed is when the funds will be released from the Treasury to your bank. No need to worry anymore - you're all set!
unpopular opinion: if ur expecting a big refund, you should adjust ur withholding so u get more $ during the year instead of giving the irs an interest free loan π€·ββοΈ
This is literally the most popular opinion on every tax forum ever π But you're right
Some people use it as forced savings because they know they'd spend it otherwise. Different strokes for different folks
do u have path act credits? EIC or ACTC? those are automatically delayed until mid feb at earliest. also did u verify identity? theres a special dept that handles identity verification that can cause major delays

β’Been there. Try using Claimyr to get through to a live agent (claimyr.com). Talking to a real person got my return unstuck when it was in limbo for months.

CONGRATS on getting your refund! The system is so messed up that it feels like a major victory just to get what was already yours to begin with π Celebrate that win!
