I filed with TurboTax Free on February 3rd and got my refund on February 18th. Here's what I did step-by-step: 1. Filed electronically using TurboTax Free 2. Verified my return was accepted (not just submitted) 3. Checked WMR every 2-3 days 4. Saw the progress bar move to approved on day 12 5. Received direct deposit on day 15 I was surprised by how many verification steps the IRS seemed to add this year! My return was super simple too - just W-2 income, standard deduction, no credits.
I filed on January 29, 2024 using TurboTax Free and received my refund on February 12, 2024 - exactly 14 days later. My friend filed on February 15, 2024 with the paid version and is still waiting. I don't think the free vs. paid version makes any difference in processing time. The IRS doesn't even know which version you used since the data format is identical.
NGL I've been stuck in IRS limbo for weeks now and finally got fed up w/ the constant busy signals. Used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to get thru to an actual human at the IRS yesterday. Took like 20 mins instead of the 3+ hrs I wasted last week trying to call myself. Agent confirmed my return was just in normal processing queue but flagged for a quick review bc of a math error they fixed. Tbh kinda worried still but at least I know what's happening now instead of just staring at that stupid bar not moving.
Did the agent mention anything about manual review? I was in a similar situation last year and thought everything was fine, but my return actually got pulled for manual review which added 8 weeks to processing! Have you checked if you have any letters in the mail from the IRS? Sometimes they send verification requests that don't show up in the online portal right away. What about your state refund - has that processed yet? Sometimes state delays can indicate federal issues too.
Looking at your timeline, this is definitely unusual even with IRS delays. I'd recommend pulling your tax transcripts online to see what's actually happening with your return. You can get them instantly at irs.gov/transcripts. If you need help understanding what the transcript codes mean, I used https://taxr.ai to analyze mine when I was in a similar situation. It explained all the weird codes and gave me a clear picture of what was happening and what to expect next. Way better than trying to Google each code individually.
This happened to me too! The IRS has been severely backlogged since COVID, and some returns from previous years are still stuck in processing. Here's what worked for me: 1. Contact your local congressional representative's office - they have caseworkers who can inquire about your refund through special channels 2. File Form 911 (Taxpayer Advocate Service) if you're experiencing financial hardship 3. Request your Wage and Income transcript and Account transcript online And yes, definitely file your 2023 return on time. The systems are separate, and not filing will only create penalties.
According to the TurboTax support forums, you can check the status of your refund after the IRS sends it by going to https://taxpayer.sbtpg.com/ - this is the bank TurboTax uses as a middleman when you choose to have fees taken from your refund. I've seen several posts on r/tax confirming this adds 3-7 days to the process. The WMR tool only shows when the IRS sent it, not when you'll actually receive it.
Finally got my refund after dealing w/ this exact same issue! WMR said sent on 3/14, didn't hit my acct until 3/22. Turns out TT uses SBTPG bank and they were holding it. Called them directly (took forever to find the right #) and magically my $ appeared next day. Next yr def paying fees upfront instead of from refund. Such a hassle but at least got my cash eventually!

Isn't it interesting how every year the IRS seems to change something fundamental about the refund process without clearly communicating it? Why not just send a press release explaining the new timing procedures? The reality is that banks used to get advance notice of incoming refunds, allowing them to credit accounts early as a courtesy. Now the IRS appears to be sending those notices closer to the actual release date. No promissory notes involved - just a timing adjustment that affects when your bank knows the money is coming.

OMG tysm for posting this! I've been freaking out bc my DDD was 3/15 but nothing hit my acct until exactly that day. Last yr it came 2 days early! Was driving me crazy checking my bank app every 5 mins lol. Def not promissory notes tho - just checked with my CPA friend and she confirmed IRS changed their ACH timing. Phew! At least now I know it's normal and not just me.
