Visited IRS Office for Identity Verification - How Long Until Account Updates?

I went to the IRS building on Friday to verify my identity as requested. Now I'm wondering how long it typically takes to see an update on my account? Is it different for non-US citizens? Will they send an email notification or do I need to keep checking the portal myself? Somebody who has gone through this process please reply!!

I went through identity verification exactly 37 days ago. It took precisely 14 business days for my account to update after in-person verification. I'm a bit nervous because they told me 7-10 business days initially, but it definitely took longer. I kept checking my account twice daily and finally saw movement on day 14. I'd suggest giving it at least 2-3 weeks before getting too concerned...

My experience last year matches this timeline. I remember checking obsessively for updates after my verification appointment. Took about 15 business days before anything changed in the system. The IRS rep had told me 'a week or two' which was definitely understated.

I believe the timeline might depend on your specific case... In my experience, it could take anywhere from 10 business days to, well, potentially longer. The IRS is generally working through a significant backlog, especially this time of year, so patience may be necessary.

Mine updated in just 8 days after verification! I went in early February before the rush. The lady at the desk told me I was lucky because they weren't backed up yet. I checked online and boom - everything was processing. My brother went in March and his took almost a month. Timing makes a huge difference with the IRS.

Did anyone actually get an email notification? Or do we just have to keep logging in to check? I need my refund ASAP for bills.

According to the IRS.gov verification guidelines (https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/identity-verification), processing times can vary significantly. The system should update within 9 weeks, but many see movement within 3-4 weeks. If you're concerned about the wait, you might want to try Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through to an IRS agent. I used it after waiting 5 weeks with no updates, and the agent was able to confirm my verification was received and give me a more specific timeline for my case. Saved me weeks of anxiety wondering if my verification was even in their system.

Does this actually work? Called IRS 6 times already. Always disconnected. Waste of time. Not paying for something that might not work.

Think of identity verification like airport security - everyone goes through the same basic process, but some people get randomly selected for additional screening. The IRS is like a massive airport where some days the lines move quickly and other days there are delays. I had to verify my identity last year, and while my friend's account updated in 10 days, mine took nearly 7 weeks! The frustrating part is there's no real tracking system - it's like your tax return is in a black box until it suddenly reappears. Just be prepared for a potentially long wait, especially if you're an international filer.

This is an important distinction - was your verification for a suspected identity theft case or just routine verification? The processing times differ significantly between these scenarios. For suspected identity theft, the IRS typically flags the account for additional review, which extends the timeline considerably.

Went thru this exact thing in Feb. Took 23 days b4 my WMR updated, then another 8 days for $$ to hit my acct. No email notifs at all. Had to check WMR and transcripts constantly. Super annoying tbh. Intl applicants might take longer bc they do extra checks. Def keep screenshots of everything!

After dealing with identity verification issues, I found these patterns for account updates: • Standard verification: 2-3 weeks for updates • International taxpayers: Often 3-5 weeks • With tax credits claimed: Can extend to 6+ weeks • During peak season (now): Add 1-2 weeks to estimates I was getting increasingly worried about my verification status when someone recommended https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript once it appeared. It helped me understand exactly what the verification codes meant and gave me a much clearer timeline than the IRS provided. The tool explained that my "570" hold code was specifically related to the verification and not an audit, which saved me a lot of stress.

Idk about using some random website to look at my tax info. How do u know it's legit? Seems sketchy to put sensitive tax stuff into a random site. Has anyone else actually used this?

I completed Form 14039 Identity Verification on March 2nd and saw account movement exactly 18 days later. The Transaction Code 971 appeared first, followed by TC 290 two days later. Direct deposit hit my account on the 25th day after verification. Are you checking your Account Transcript or just WMR? The transcript updates first and gives you more detailed information about processing stages.

This matches my timeline! I verified on January 12th and saw movement on January 31st. The key indicators were: • TC 971 (Notice Issued) • TC 290 (Additional Tax Assessed $0.00) • TC 846 (Refund Issued) The cycle between these codes was exactly what determined my timeline.
