$6,960 refund for 2024 taxes still processing after 3 months despite using IP PIN - Single filer seeking answers

I filed my taxes back in April for the 2023 tax year and I have an Identity Protection PIN that I use every time I file. I was expecting a refund of about $7,960.00 but when I check the IRS website or the IRS2Go app, all I get is "Your tax return is still being processed. A refund date will be provided when available. For more information about processing delays, please see our Refund Frequently Asked Questions." When I log into my IRS Account online at sa.www4.irs.gov and look at my Tax year 2024 return information, I can see that my return status shows: - Return: Received ? - Refund: Approved ? - Refund Sent: ? Under all this it just says "Your tax return is still being processed. A refund date will be provided when available." Then there's some standard text about "Please Note: For refund information, please continue to check here, or use our free mobile app, IRS2Go. Updates to refund status are made no more than once a day." My personal tax information shows: - Tax Year: 2024 - Filing Status: Single - Expected refund amount: $6,960.00 It's been almost 3 months now and nothing has changed. I've checked my transcript but there's no update. Has anyone else with an IP PIN experienced delays like this? I've tried calling but can't get through to anyone. I'm starting to worry that something's wrong with my return. Is having an Identity Protection PIN causing this delay? Should I be concerned that my refund is stuck in processing for this long?

Rachel Clark

The "still being processed" message is definitely frustrating, especially when you have an IP PIN. The IRS is giving extra scrutiny to returns with IP PINs as part of their identity theft prevention measures. When you have an IP PIN, the IRS performs additional verification steps before processing your refund. Some things to check: 1. Verify that you entered the correct IP PIN on your return. If it was incorrect, the IRS would reject or delay processing. 2. Check if you received any letters from the IRS requesting additional information. 3. Your refund amount ($8,300) is relatively large, which can trigger additional reviews. The IRS is still dealing with major backlogs from the pandemic. If you filed an accurate return with the correct IP PIN, you'll eventually get your refund, but it could take 120+ days in some cases. If you haven't received a letter and it's been 3 months, you might want to request a tax transcript or contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service.

Thanks for this detailed response! I double-checked and I'm sure I used the correct IP PIN. Haven't gotten any letters from the IRS either. Is there any way to get through to a human at the IRS these days?

Just wanted to add - I had the exact same issue last year with my IP PIN. Took almost 5 months to get my refund. The IRS is just SLOW with these.

OP, getting thru to the IRS is almost impossible these days. Ive been trying for weeks wasting hours on hold just to get disconnected.

I was in the exact same situation with my IP PIN and the whole "still processing" mess. After weeks of frustration, I used this tool called taxr.ai and it completely changed the game. It analyzed my transcripts and explained exactly why my refund was delayed and what codes to look for. Saved me from having to decipher all that IRS jargon on my own. Instead of guessing what was happening, I actually understood my situation. I use it every time I need to check something tax-related now - https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It basically analyzes your entire transcript, identifies all the codes and entries, and explains them in plain English. It also predicts next steps based on your specific situation. Way better than trying to Google every code you see or reading generic advice. It even identified an error in my filing that was causing the delay - something I would have never caught on my own.

Do you work for them or something? Sounds too good to be true 🧐

Nope, just a satisfied user who was in the same mess as OP. I was about to pay an accountant $300 to help me figure out what was going on with my refund before I found this. Seriously, it's a game changer if you're dealing with IRS delays or weird transcript codes.

After dealing with this same "still processing" nonsense for weeks, I finally got through to an actual human at the IRS using claimyr.com. Instead of wasting hours on hold just to get disconnected, they got me a callback with a real person who explained exactly what was happening with my IP PIN verification. Talking to the agent directly was the only way I got my issue resolved - it was the best money I've ever spent considering they released my refund right after the call!

Wait, you actually got to talk to someone at the IRS? I thought that was a myth these days 😂

Haha I know right? I was shocked when my phone actually rang and it was a real IRS agent! None of that 'your call is important to us' garbage for hours.

Does this really work? I've been trying to call for weeks and always get disconnected.

It absolutely works. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying to call myself for like 3 weeks straight. The agent I spoke to actually found an issue with my IP PIN verification that was causing the hold up.

What's the catch though? I've tried everything to reach the IRS

No catch. You pay for them to navigate the phone system and get you a callback. Worth every penny when you consider the value of your time and sanity. My $8k refund was released within days after the call.

I had this issue too. Turns out my refund was delayed because having an IP PIN puts your return through extra verification. For me, they were verifying my W-2 information with my employer, which took about 11 weeks. Try checking your transcript for code 570 (refund hold) followed by 571 (hold released). That's usually the pattern with IP PIN verification delays.

-

Chris King

I don't see any 570 or 571 codes on my transcript, just the 150 tax return filed code from when I submitted. I guess that means they haven't even started the verification process yet?

Yep, sounds like they haven't even gotten to the verification stage yet. The pandemic backlog is still affecting them big time. Just keep checking your transcript weekly.

The most frustrating thing about the IP PIN is how the IRS gives u zero information. Like, just tell us what's happening! It took me 4.5 months to get my refund last year WITH an IP PIN. The IRS is broken 🤡

Have you checked your mail carefully? Sometimes they send letters requesting more information but they look like junk mail. My IP PIN return got held up for 2 months because I missed a letter asking me to verify my identity. Worth checking!

I've been checking my mail obsessively! Nothing from the IRS so far. I'll keep an eye out though.

IP PIN holder here. I'm in the same boat every year - my returns always take 2-3 months longer than everyone else's. The IP PIN is supposed to protect us from identity theft but it ends up punishing us with delays instead. System is so broken.

Same! It's like being punished for doing the right thing. My sister filed the same day as me, got her refund in 2 weeks. I'm still waiting after 3 months because of my IP PIN 🤬

If your refund is large (over $8k is considered large) AND you have an IP PIN, you're basically guaranteed extra scrutiny. I've been using taxr.ai to track exactly what's happening with my transcript and it's been super helpful. For years I was just waiting in the dark, now I can actually see what's going on https://taxr.ai

have u tried contacting yur local congressperson's office? They can do a congressional inquiry which often speeds things up. That's what finally worked for me after 4 months of 'still processing' with my IP PIN return.

-

Chris King

I hadn't thought of that! How did you contact them? Did you just call their office?

Yep! Just called my rep's local office and explained the situation. They have staff who handle IRS issues. I had to fill out a form authorizing them to inquire about my tax situation, and they contacted the IRS on my behalf. Got my refund about 3 weeks later.

Can confirm this works. My congresswoman's office got my refund unstuck after 5 months of the "still processing" message.

I've been using an IP PIN for 3 years now, and each year it seems to take longer. Protip: if you can't reach the IRS directly, call the Taxpayer Advocate Service at 877-777-4778. They can sometimes help expedite things if you're experiencing financial hardship because of the delay.

The IRS is severely understaffed and working on outdated tech from the 1960s. Combine that with the extra fraud checks from an IP PIN and you've got a recipe for major delays. I know it's frustrating but hang in there. If it helps, I waited 6 months last year for my $5k refund with an IP PIN, but it did eventually arrive.

6 months?! That's insane. I'm already struggling with bills assuming I'd have this money by now. The system is so broken.

dude i gave up on calling after like 20 attempts. used claimyr.com and had an irs agent on the phone within 2 hours. she told me exactly what was happening with my IP PIN verification and when to expect my refund. talking to a live person was worth every penny since my $7k refund was released the next week.

You might be caught in the income verification program. The IRS randomly selects returns (especially ones with large refunds or certain credits) for extra verification, and having an IP PIN makes it even more likely. They don't tell you when you're selected, which is why the WMR tool just says "still processing" forever.

-

Chris King

Is there any way to find out if this is what's happening? I filed with TurboTax and claimed the standard deduction - nothing fancy that should trigger extra review.

Unfortunately, there's no way to know for sure unless you talk to an agent. Even "simple" returns get randomly selected. The only indicator would be a 420/424/570 code on your transcript, but you said you don't see those yet.

Ugh the IP PIN struggle is real. This year I broke down and paid an accountant to file for me thinking it would help. Spoiler: it didn't. 3 months later and I'm still seeing the same message. The IRS is a joke.

I've tried for weeks to understand what was going on with my IP PIN delayed refund but kept hitting dead ends. taxr.ai completely solved it for me - showed me my verification was stuck because of an employer reporting mismatch. Instead of guessing, I actually knew what was happening and what to fix. A total lifesaver when dealing with the black hole that is the IRS. https://taxr.ai

Night and day difference. I tried reading my transcript myself but had no idea what all the codes meant or how they related to each other. This tool explained everything in plain English and showed me where the process was stuck. It even predicted when I'd get my refund based on my specific situation - and it was accurate!

Former IRS employee here. The IP PIN returns get routed to a specific department for extra verification, and that department is chronically understaffed. Best advice is to just wait it out. If it goes beyond 10 weeks, then try calling the specific IP PIN help line at 800-908-4490.

Check ur transcript for cycle code. If it ends in 05, that means weekly updates (usually happens Thursday night/Friday morning). If it ends in 01-04, that means daily updates. This might help you know when to check for changes.

Mine ends in 05 - so I should check on Fridays? I've been checking randomly and getting frustrated seeing no changes.

This might sound crazy but did you accidentally claim any pandemic-related credits? The IRS is heavily scrutinizing those and it could explain the delay, especially combined with an IP PIN.

I was stuck in IP PIN verification hell for months before I finally got a callback from an IRS agent through claimyr.com. The agent found an issue that was never gonna resolve itself without intervention. Talking to someone directly was the only thing that fixed my situation and got my refund released. Worth every penny when you consider I was waiting on a $6k refund.
