570 & 971 Codes on Transcript - IRS Says Random Review Until End of July?
So I just checked my transcript and noticed both 570 & 971 codes. When I called the IRS, they told me I was randomly selected for verification - basically to check if my W2 & credits all add up correctly. Kind of like how banks randomly audit accounts, I guess? The agent said I won't get my refund until the end of July! š Is this actually legit? Has anyone else gone through this process? She mentioned I was randomly selected & if I noticed something wrong on my return I should amend my taxes, which could speed things up. But if nothing's wrong, I have to wait until my 120-day review period is up, which ends in late July. Seems way longer than last year when I got my refund in like 2 weeks. Anyone dealt with this before?

This is a legitimate process known as Return Integrity Verification (RIV). The 570 code indicates a temporary hold on your account while the 971 code signifies that a notice has been generated explaining the review. The IRS employs filtering algorithms to select returns for verification, particularly when credits like EITC or CTC are claimed. The 120-day timeframe is standard protocol for these reviews, though they're often completed sooner.

Thx for the detailed info! Is there any way to check progress during those 120 days? My WMR bar hasn't moved in weeks and I'm getting antsy abt it.

This is really helpful information. I had a similar situation back in 2022 and didn't understand what was happening. I wish I'd known about these codes then - would have saved me a lot of stress wondering if I'd made a mistake on my return.

I went through exactly the same situation last year - codes 570 and 971 appeared on March 12th, and I was counting on that $4,873 refund for some urgent expenses. After 6 weeks of checking daily and getting nowhere, I used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript. It explained that my return was in the verification queue with an estimated completion timeframe of 93-126 days based on current processing patterns. The tool actually predicted my release date within 3 days of when it actually happened! Saved me so much anxiety knowing exactly what was happening instead of just waiting in the dark.

I'm always cautious about third-party tax tools. Some concerns: ā¢ How do they access your transcript data? ā¢ What security measures do they have? ā¢ Are they just telling you what you could learn for free? ā¢ Do they store your tax information afterward? Not saying it's not helpful, but I prefer using official IRS resources when possible.

Ooh, this sounds promising! I'm in the same boat right now and feeling like I'm trapped in IRS limbo. Was it really accurate with the timeline prediction? I'm wondering if it's worth trying since the IRS phone agents just keep telling me "keep waiting" which isn't exactly helpful when you're trying to plan finances!

Based on the IRS Data Book statistics, approximately 3.2% of returns are selected for this type of verification. When dealing with these review situations, reaching an IRS representative who can provide specific information is critical. According to irs.gov/help, current wait times are averaging 45-90 minutes for the general line. I've personally found success using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) which connects you directly to an IRS agent, typically within 15-20 minutes. This allows you to confirm exactly what documentation they need (if any) and potentially expedite the verification process if you can provide requested information immediately.

Interesting service, but wouldn't the IRS eventually call you if they needed additional documentation? Is paying for a service to reach them really necessary, or just a convenience for the impatient among us?

Thanks for suggesting this. I've been trying to reach someone for days with no luck. Do they actually get you through to a real person who can help with specific account issues? I'm worried about paying and still not getting answers about my situation.

I've tracked several cases like yours during the 2024 filing season. From my observations, returns selected for random verification that were filed before March 1st are completing review in approximately 87 days on average. Those filed after March 15th are seeing slightly faster timeframes of around 72 days. The key date to watch on your transcript is the cycle date attached to the 570 code - if it was posted on March 25th, for example, add 87-120 days to estimate your resolution window. The July timeframe they gave you aligns with these statistics.

I went through this exact situation last tax season. Here's what worked for me: 1) I called IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and specifically asked if there were any documents they needed from me (turns out they needed verification of my dependent) 2) I faxed the requested documentation with my taxpayer ID clearly marked on each page 3) I called again 15 days later to confirm receipt 4) My refund was processed exactly 21 days after they confirmed receiving my documents The key is finding out if they actually need something from you or if it's just in a queue. Don't just wait if there's action you could take - that was my mistake initially and it cost me an extra month of waiting.

Be careful about amending unless you're absolutely certain something is wrong. I was in this situation, got impatient, and filed an amendment thinking it would speed things up. It actually reset my 120-day clock AND put me in a different processing queue that took even longer. If the IRS agent didn't specifically tell you what to fix, don't amend. Just wait it out or call again to get more specific information about why you were selected.
