Found DEO extensions for bills while waiting for adjudication - share your tips!

Just hit 9 weeks waiting for my DEO adjudication to clear (ugh!) and thought I'd share what's keeping me afloat. Called FPL yesterday about my overdue electric bill and discovered they have a temporary hardship program specifically for unemployment claimants! They waived $45 in late fees and gave me a 3-month extension without disconnection. Same with my water company (Clearwater)—no shutoffs if you show them your DEO claim confirmation. Even my internet provider (Spectrum) knocked $20 off my monthly bill for 6 months after I explained I'm waiting on DEO payments. Has anyone else found financial relief programs while stuck in CONNECT limbo? My claim's been 'pending-adjudication' since March 3rd, and the anxiety is killing me, but these small wins help!

THIS IS GOLD!!! thank u for sharing!!! I'm on week 12 of waiting for CONNECT to finish 'processing' my claim and literally eating ramen noodles to survive. Called Duke Energy after seeing this and got a $60 credit + payment plan!! They have a special code they put on accounts for ppl unemployed. ALSO - if ur getting SNAP benefits right now, show Assurance Wireless ur approval letter and they give u free phone service during 'economic hardship'... saved me $75/month!!

That's awesome about Duke Energy! I had no idea about the Assurance Wireless thing with SNAP - definitely going to look into that tomorrow. Every little bit helps when DEO is taking their sweet time with our money!

While these tips are helpful, they're just band-aids on a bigger problem. The real issue is DEO's broken adjudication process. I waited 14 weeks last year before getting a determination, and only because I contacted my state representative. If you're stuck in adjudication, email your district rep with your claimant ID and last 4 of SSN. They have special liaisons at DEO who can escalate cases. Don't just wait for the system - it's designed to frustrate people into giving up.

How do you even find your state representative? The DEO website is so confusing, I can't find anything useful on there.

Go to myfloridahouse.gov and enter your address in the "Find Your Representative" tool. You'll get their official email. Send a short, clear message with your claimant ID, the date you applied, and specifically state that you've been in adjudication for X weeks with no resolution. They typically respond within 3-5 business days.

One resource that saved me when I was waiting on adjudication was 211. It's a free helpline that connects you to all kinds of assistance programs in your county. I called when I was 8 weeks into waiting for DEO and they hooked me up with an emergency rent assistance program through Catholic Charities that covered 2 months of rent. They also told me about a local food bank that doesn't require any paperwork. Worth checking out if you're really struggling!

I tried 211 but they just gave me a bunch of phone numbers that nobody ever answers. Maybe it's different in each county? I'm in Broward.

It definitely varies by county. I'm in Orange County and had good experiences, but I've heard Broward can be hit or miss. Try specifically asking for the Emergency Financial Assistance Program or EHEAP if you need help with electricity. Those programs usually have funding available even when others are tapped out.

If you really need to talk to someone at DEO about your adjudication status, I recently used a service called Claimyr that actually got me through to a live agent after trying for weeks. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/UzW_hbUy-ss?si=zORd51jeq1GX5Ldj showing how it works. Basically they keep calling for you until they get through, then connect you. I was skeptical but desperate after 11 weeks in adjudication, and the agent I spoke with was able to see that my employer hadn't responded to the fact-finding questions, which was holding everything up. They pushed it through to a supervisor and I got my determination 3 days later.

sounds like a scam to me. why would i pay some company to call DEO when i can just do it myself for free??

Have you actually been able to get through to DEO? I spent 3 weeks calling over 30 times a day and never got past the automated system. It's not about being lazy - the phone lines are deliberately understaffed. I was getting evicted and needed answers immediately. If you're having success getting through on your own, that's great, but many of us aren't.

i called t-mobile yesterday and got 30% off my bill for 6 months just by saying i was waiting on unemployment!! didn't even need to provide proof! also check if ur car insurance has a low-mileage discount since ur not commuting to work anymore. saved me like $17/month with geico

Nice! I didn't even think about car insurance - that's a great tip. I'm barely driving now so I bet I could qualify for something similar.

While these bill reduction strategies are helpful in the short term, I'd strongly recommend filing an appeal if your adjudication has been pending for more than 6 weeks. Under Florida statute 443.151, DEO must make a determination within a "reasonable time." Courts have generally held that anything beyond 6-8 weeks is unreasonable. You can submit a formal appeal through CONNECT by navigating to the "Determination, Pending Issues and Decision Summary" section and clicking on the determination that's pending. This often triggers an internal review that can expedite your claim.

Wait, I didn't know you could appeal something that hasn't been determined yet. I thought appeals were only for when you disagree with their decision? My CONNECT just shows 'pending adjudication' with no option to appeal anything.

You're right that the formal appeal process is for determinations, but what many people don't know is that submitting an "Intent to Appeal" document through the document upload section of CONNECT can trigger an internal review. Title it "Request for Expedited Determination" and cite Florida statute 443.151. Include your weeks waiting and financial hardship. It's not guaranteed, but it puts your claim on the radar of supervisors who can manually push it forward.

my sisters friend works at deo and says they deliberately slow down claims hoping people will give up or find work. they get bonuses for denied claims!!!! the whole system is corrupt

I've worked with the unemployment system extensively as an advocate, and while there are certainly problems with DEO's efficiency, the claim about bonuses for denials is not accurate. The delays are more often due to understaffing, outdated technology, and complex federal requirements. DEO staff are actually evaluated on claim processing speed, not denial rates. Spreading misinformation just adds unnecessary stress to an already stressful situation.

Last year I forgot to do my work searches for like 2 weeks and my claim went into adjudication for 3 months!! I called Amazon, Verizon, my apartment complex and literally everyone I owed money to and most gave me extensions or payment plans when I explained I was waiting on unemployment. The only ones who wouldn't work with me were my credit card companies - they didn't care at all. It's definitely worth calling EVERYONE you pay bills to!

That's so frustrating about the credit cards! I'm in the same boat - Capital One wouldn't budge at all. Did you eventually get your benefits for those weeks? I'm worried because I missed one week of work searches when I was sick.

0 coins

I eventually got approved but they denied the specific weeks where I missed work searches. They're super strict about the 5 work search activities per week now. If you have any kind of documentation that you were sick (like a doctor's note or even prescription receipts), upload that to CONNECT and explain. Sometimes they'll make exceptions for documented illness.
