< Back to Florida Unemployment

Finally received backpay but DEO counting partial income wiped out my $600 FPUC for one week!

Just closed the chapter on my 5-month DEO nightmare that started January 10th and finally ended two days ago on June 15th, 2025. Got all my backpay but discovered something super frustrating! My company had these mandatory 'transition meetings' on Zoom back in February (even though they already knew I was permanently laid off). Ended up getting paid $75 for attending which I honestly reported. That tiny amount COMPLETELY wiped out my regular $175 benefit for that week AND nullified the entire $600 federal payment too! Nobody warned me this would happen. If I had known, I would've skipped those pointless meetings! Anyone else get burned by reporting small amounts of income? The DEO system is truly something special. 🙄

So frustrating! Did you ever try to fight it? I'm wondering if there's any way to appeal since the meetings were basically mandatory.

This happens because Florida's unemployment system uses a very strict income reporting formula. Any income over 8 times your hourly benefit amount completely disqualifies you for that week. Since the $600 FPUC was only available to people who received at least $1 in state benefits that week, losing your state benefit means automatically losing the federal money too. For future reference (for anyone reading), always calculate how part-time or one-off work will impact your benefits. Take your weekly benefit amount, divide by 8, and that tells you how much you can earn hourly before your benefits start reducing dollar-for-dollar.

Thanks for explaining this! I had no idea it worked that way. Weird system that punishes people for picking up small amounts of work. Wish I'd known this calculation before those meetings.

YEP!!!! DEO is COMPLETELY BROKEN. I got hit with this same garbage. One day of training ($90) and BOOM - lost $775 total between state and federal. Made me decide to just refuse any small work until I found a full-time position. THE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO SCREW US OVER!!!!

It does seem counterproductive. The system should encourage people to take part-time or temporary work while looking for full-time employment, not penalize them for it. I know several states have different formulas that are less punitive.

This is actually a common issue with Florida's unemployment system specifically. The income deduction formula is more punitive than many other states. For anyone dealing with this issue now, I'd recommend: 1. Always calculate potential income impact before accepting small jobs/gigs 2. If you're waiting on backpay and having trouble reaching DEO to discuss income reporting issues, I'd suggest trying Claimyr (claimyr.com). They got me connected to a live agent in under 30 minutes after I spent weeks getting disconnected. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/UzW_hbUy-ss?si=zORd51jeq1GX5Ldj that shows how it works. 3. Keep detailed records of all work and payments in case you need to dispute anything later It's especially important to understand how income is counted if you're on a partial unemployment claim.

Thanks for the resource! I'm mostly done with my claim now, but I'll definitely pass this along to friends still battling the system. Getting through to an actual person seems nearly impossible.

So during my last unemployment stretch, i learned that if you make more than your weekly benefit amount, you lose everything for that week. but what's really unfair is that if you make just $1 over your benefit amount, you lose the entire federal supplement too! i wish someone had told me this when i first applied - would have saved me from accepting a one-day temporary gig that cost me over $700 in benefits. btw, did your employer make those zoom meetings mandatory? because if they were truly required, you might have grounds to appeal that determination.

That's not exactly how it works with Florida DEO. You can actually earn up to your weekly benefit amount without losing everything - they just reduce your payment dollar for dollar based on what you earn. Once you hit your weekly benefit amount in earnings, then you get nothing for that week. Source: I've been through this twice and finally understand their crazy system.

I'm curious - when did you report this income? Was it on your regular bi-weekly certification, or did you have to go back and report it later? Sometimes how/when income is reported can affect how it's processed. Also, for anyone dealing with unemployment now, the current CONNECT system is slightly improved compared to the 2020-2021 version, but knowing the rules is still critical. The DEO website actually has a calculator that helps you determine how income affects your benefits, but it's buried deep in their resources section.

I reported it in my regular bi-weekly certification. This was back in February, but it took until June for them to process everything and issue my backpay. I think the calculator would have been really helpful - wish they'd make resources like that more prominent on their site!

I understand the frustration, but I strongly recommend always reporting income accurately. The penalties for unreported income can be severe - including having to repay all benefits with penalties, and in extreme cases, fraud charges. The DEO regularly performs income verification with employers and tax authorities.
