DEO quarterly reapplication requirement? Why am I being told to reapply?

I'm totally confused about something on my Florida unemployment claim. I was at the CareerSource office yesterday and the lady told me I need to reapply for benefits because of the "new quarter" starting. My claim still shows active with 8 weeks left, so I don't understand why I'd need to do a whole new application. I thought once you're approved, you're good until your benefit year ends or you run out of weeks? Has something changed with DEO procedures? I'm worried if I reapply, it might mess up my current payments which finally started coming through regularly after 3 weeks of adjudication hell. Does anyone know what this quarterly reapplication thing is about?

This is a real thing and it can be confusing! When a new calendar quarter begins, DEO is required by law to check if you qualify for a new benefit year based on more recent earnings. If you've worked and earned enough wages during the base period for the new quarter, you might be eligible for a new claim with possibly different weekly benefit amounts. If you don't reapply when instructed, your payments will eventually stop. You'll likely get a message in your CONNECT inbox or see a link to "Apply for Reemployment Assistance Benefits" on your homepage even though your claim shows active. It's not optional - it's part of the Florida unemployment system requirements.

Wow, I had no idea this was a thing! My CONNECT homepage doesn't show any notifications about reapplying yet, but maybe they're telling me in advance? How do I know if I've earned enough in the new base period? I worked part-time for about 3 months before getting laid off.

Wait, I'm confused. Does everybody have to reapply every quarter? I've been on unemployment since November and haven't had to reapply yet. My claim says it's good until November 2025. Should I be worried???

The quarterly review only affects certain claimants, not everyone. It depends on your specific work history and earnings during the new base period. The base period is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file a new claim. If you worked during that period and earned enough wages (usually need wages in at least 2 quarters and total earnings of at least 1.5x your high quarter), the system will prompt you to reapply. If you didn't work or didn't earn enough, you'll continue on your current claim until you exhaust benefits or reach your benefit year end. It's a completely automated process in the CONNECT system. If you need to reapply, you'll get a notification and your homepage will show the application link. Don't do anything until you're specifically told to by the system.

That makes more sense! So I should just wait for a notification in CONNECT before doing anything? The CareerSource lady made it sound like I needed to do it right away. This whole system is so confusing.

Same thing happened to me. The quarterly review put my payments on hold for almost a month while they determined my new benefit amount. Called DEO literally 48 times and could never get through. Finally got desperate and used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to connect with a live agent. The video demo (https://youtu.be/UzW_hbUy-ss?si=zORd51jeq1GX5Ldj) shows how it works. Got through in about 20 minutes and the agent was able to expedite my quarterly review. Payments started again 3 days later.

My neighbor works at DEO and she told me this quarterly review thing is actually a good thing for most people. If you've worked since your initial claim and made decent money, your weekly benefit amount might actually go up after the review. Mine went from $231 to $275 after my quarterly review, so I was pretty happy about that. But yeah, there's usually a delay while they process everything.

That's a good point about the potential increase. The quarterly review can sometimes work in your favor if you had higher earnings in the new base period. However, it's equally possible for your benefit amount to go down or even to be determined ineligible if you didn't have sufficient earnings in the new quarters. Just be prepared for the temporary pause in payments while they process the new application. Try to set aside some emergency funds if possible, as the reapplication can take 2-3 weeks to process even without any issues.

Thanks everyone for the clarification. I logged into CONNECT just now and sure enough, there's a message in my inbox about the quarterly review! Looks like I need to complete it by next Friday. Guess the CareerSource lady was right after all. I'll get started on it tomorrow. Really hope it doesn't delay my payments for too long - I've got rent due in two weeks.

I went through this in February. The quarters are Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun, Jul-Sep, and Oct-Dec. So we just entered a new quarter in April. The DEO system automatically flags accounts that might qualify for a new determination based on more recent work history. The most frustrating part is that even though you still had weeks left on your current claim, they'll put everything on hold until they make a new determination. In my case, they ended up keeping my benefit amount the same, but I still had to wait almost 3 weeks with no income while they processed everything. The system is incredibly inefficient.

Just to clarify something important: make sure you keep claiming your weeks during the quarterly review process. Even though payments might be temporarily paused, you still need to log in and claim your weeks on schedule. If you don't, you could lose those weeks entirely, even after your new determination is processed. Also, when you do the reapplication, you'll need to complete all work search requirements (5 activities per week) during this period just like normal. The quarterly review doesn't exempt you from any of the standard requirements.

That's super helpful to know! I would have assumed I didn't need to claim weeks during the review process. Going to set reminders on my phone so I don't forget. Really appreciate everyone's help understanding this confusing process!
