Won EDD appeal for overpayment - how long to get refund back?
Just received my EDD decision letter yesterday stating that I won my appeal against the overpayment determination! I'm honestly still in shock because I had already paid back around $5,700 that EDD claimed I was overpaid last year (didn't want wage garnishment hanging over my head). The letter says I'm entitled to receive this money back, but doesn't explain HOW or WHEN I'll get my refund. Has anyone gone through this process before? Do they automatically issue a refund or do I need to submit additional paperwork? And most importantly - how long does it typically take to get my money back? Bills are piling up and this would be a huge help right now.

Congrats on winning ur appeal! I've been through almost the exact same situation back in November. In my case, it took about 6 weeks for EDD to refund the $4200 I had repaid. They didn't notify me at all - the money just showed up one day as a direct deposit to the same account where I originally received benefits. But I've heard others say they got a paper check instead. Might depend on how you were receiving ur benefits originally.

6 weeks??? That's so long to wait 😩 Did you have to call them at all or fill out any forms requesting the refund, or did it just happen automatically?

The refund process after winning an overpayment appeal typically takes 4-8 weeks. EDD should process it automatically, but their systems don't always work efficiently. The refund will typically be issued in the same form as your original benefits (direct deposit or Money Network debit card).\n\nI recommend calling EDD after 3 weeks if you haven't received anything. Make sure to have your appeal case number and decision letter ready when you call. Ask specifically for the \

Thank you for the detailed information! I was getting my benefits through direct deposit, so hopefully that's how the refund will come too. I'll wait 3 weeks and then try calling if nothing shows up.

3 MONTHS?? That's ridiculous! I can't believe they can just hold onto our money for that long after admitting they were wrong.

If you're struggling to get through to EDD on the phone (which is likely), try using Claimyr. I was in a similar situation with an appeal refund and couldn't get answers for weeks. Claimyr connected me to an EDD agent in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km\n\nThe website is claimyr.com - it saved me so much frustration when dealing with my refund questions.

Yes, it definitely works. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for 3 days straight to reach someone. Got connected to an agent who was able to see exactly where my refund was in the system and gave me a timeframe.

I'M SO SICK OF EDD AND THEIR GARBAGE SYSTEMS!!!! First they WRONGLY take our money, then make us FIGHT for months through appeals, then when WE WIN they make us wait ANOTHER 2+ months to get OUR OWN MONEY back???? This is absolutely criminal behavior. If we owed THEM money they'd be garnishing wages and adding penalties immediately. The double standard is DISGUSTING. I hope you get your money back faster than I did (9 weeks of waiting after my appeal win).

Totally agree. When I won my appeal I had to call like 27 times before someone finally told me my refund was

has anyone here ever gotten an instant refund from edd? my sister says she got hers in 2 weeks but that seems way too fast based on what im reading here

Two weeks would be unusually fast but not impossible. Processing times vary greatly depending on current workloads in the Appeals division and how many refunds are being processed. Sometimes simpler cases with smaller amounts get processed faster than complex ones or those with larger refund amounts.

Update: It's been 5 weeks now and I finally received my refund! It came via direct deposit just like my original benefits. I ended up calling twice - first time the rep couldn't tell me anything useful, second time they confirmed it was being processed. For anyone else going through this, just be patient but persistent!
