Will I get a tax refund if I was on California EDD unemployment?

So I've been trying to figure out something that's been stressing me out since January. I was on California EDD unemployment benefits for about 7 months last year after getting laid off from my logistics job. I got a new position in October and have been working since, but now tax season is rolling around and I genuinely don't know what to expect. My coworker told me unemployment benefits are taxable income which completely blindsided me because nobody mentioned that when I was filing my weekly claims. I never opted in for voluntary tax withholding when I set up my claim so now I'm sitting here wondering - will I still get a tax refund, or am I going to owe money? I had some federal taxes withheld from my new job in Q4 but nothing was withheld from my UI payments all year. Does anyone have experience with this? Did you end up getting a refund or owing after a year on unemployment?

Yeah this caught me off guard my first time on UI too. Unemployment benefits ARE taxable at the federal level - California EDD will send you a 1099-G form showing exactly how much you received. Whether you get a refund or owe depends on your total income picture for the year. If you only had UI income and nothing else, your tax bill might actually be pretty low because your overall income was lower. But since you went back to work in October, your employer was withholding based on just that job's salary, not accounting for the UI income you had earlier in the year. So you might owe a bit.

0 coins

Wait so the 1099-G is automatically mailed to me or do I have to request it somewhere on UI Online?

0 coins

California EDD mails 1099-G forms by January 31st each year. You can also access it through your UI Online account under the tax documents section. Make sure your mailing address is current in the system.

0 coins

Same question I had! I logged into UI Online and found mine right there under tax forms. Saved me waiting for the mail.

0 coins

The whether-you-get-a-refund question really depends on a few things. How much UI did you collect total? What was your income from the new job Oct-Dec? And did your new employer withhold at the correct rate? If your combined income for the year puts you in a lower bracket than normal, you might actually come out ahead. I'd honestly just plug everything into a free tax calculator online before you panic. TurboTax has a free estimator that doesn't require you to actually file.

0 coins

That's actually a really good idea. I keep putting it off because I'm scared of what I'll find lol

0 coins

same lol i did this and found out i owed like $340 which wasnt as bad as i thought it would be

0 coins

The free estimators are great for this. I used one and it turned out I was getting a refund even after the UI income because my work withholding from Q4 was aggressive.

0 coins

One thing a lot of people miss - California does NOT tax unemployment benefits at the state level. So your California state return should actually be fine and you might get a small state refund. The issue is purely federal. Make sure whatever tax software you use or whoever does your taxes knows to back out the UI amount on your CA state return.

0 coins

Oh wow I did not know that about California. That's actually really reassuring. So I only need to worry about federal?

0 coins

Correct. CA unemployment is exempt from state income tax. Federal is where it's fully taxable as ordinary income. Big difference from some other states.

0 coins

This is an important point that trips people up every year. State vs federal treatment is completely different for UI benefits in California.

0 coins

wait what really?? i filed last year and i think my tax person included it in state income. might need to check that

0 coins

I went through this exact situation two years ago. Was on California EDD for almost 6 months, no withholding, then went back to work. I ended up owing about $800 federal because I hadn't set up the voluntary 10% federal withholding on my UI payments. It was a rough surprise. For anyone reading this who is CURRENTLY on unemployment - please go into UI Online and set up voluntary federal tax withholding NOW so you don't deal with this headache later. You can do it right in your account settings.

0 coins

This is me but in reverse - already off UI now and dealing with the aftermath. Lesson learned for next time for sure.

0 coins

wish someone had told me this when i first applied. nobody at EDD mentioned it and i had no idea it was even an option until i owed a bunch at tax time

0 coins

okay random but related - does anyone know if the unemployment income affects things like Covered California subsidies or FAFSA? my daughter was on UI last year and is applying for financial aid this year and im worried the UI income messes things up

0 coins

For FAFSA it uses prior year income so yes the UI income would be counted in the calculation. For Covered California subsidy eligibility it also counts UI as income. Both are based on MAGI which includes unemployment benefits.

0 coins

ugh okay thank you. that's what I was afraid of. she might lose some aid because of it

0 coins

Worth talking to a financial aid counselor at the school - sometimes there are appeals processes if income was unusually high one year due to circumstances like unemployment.

0 coins

To directly answer your question about refunds - I've seen it go both ways. People who collected UI all year with no withholding and then no other income often end up in a low enough bracket that they owe very little or sometimes get small refunds due to credits. People who had significant W2 income on top of UI usually end up owing because the UI wasn't withheld. Your situation - 7 months UI then back to work Oct through Dec - honestly could go either way. I'd estimate you probably owe something federal but it might not be massive. Run the numbers before you stress too much.

0 coins

This is the most balanced answer I've gotten. I need to just sit down and actually calculate it instead of dreading it.

0 coins

seriously just do it, the not knowing is worse than the actual number usually

I tried to call California EDD earlier this year to ask about my 1099-G because I never received it in the mail and couldn't access my UI Online account. Absolute nightmare trying to get through. Spent 3 days calling and getting the automated system hang up on me. Someone in another thread recommended Claimyr - it's a service at claimyr.com that gets you connected to a live EDD agent. There's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10. Used it to get my 1099-G situation sorted out without the phone runaround. Genuinely saved me so much stress during tax season.

0 coins

Oh interesting - did you need to call EDD specifically for the tax form or was there another way to get it?

0 coins

In my case my UI Online account was locked so I couldn't pull it digitally and the mail never came. Had to call to get it resent. Claimyr was how I actually got through to a real person who could help.

0 coins

I've heard of Claimyr - my neighbor used it when she had an adjudication issue and couldn't get anyone on the phone. Said it worked well for her.

0 coins

THE FACT THAT NOBODY TELLS YOU UNEMPLOYMENT IS TAXABLE WHEN YOU SIGN UP IS CRIMINAL. They should have giant red banners on UI Online saying THIS MONEY WILL BE TAXED. I found out the hard way with a nearly $1,200 federal bill after my claim and it almost wrecked me financially. The whole system feels designed to trap people.

0 coins

It is actually mentioned in the EDD materials but buried. I agree it should be front and center. Too many people get blindsided.

0 coins

Buried is right. Nobody reads the fine print when they're in crisis mode trying to figure out how to pay rent

0 coins

100% agree it should be more prominent. The 10% voluntary withholding option should basically be opt-OUT not opt-in.

0 coins

Just went through this whole thing for the first time. I was on California EDD UI for about 4 months last year. Here's what actually happened with my taxes: got my 1099-G from EDD showing total benefits received, entered it in TurboTax, and because my total annual income including those 4 months of UI was lower than my normal working income, I actually ended up in a lower bracket overall and got a small federal refund. So it's definitely possible to still get a refund. Depends on your complete situation.

0 coins

This is genuinely hopeful to hear. I keep assuming the worst but maybe it won't be so bad.

0 coins

Just run the numbers! The uncertainty is the worst part.

0 coins

same thing happened to me, lower total income = lower bracket = smaller tax bill than expected

0 coins

okay so genuine question - if someone messed up and didn't report their UI income on their taxes from a prior year, what happens? asking for a friend lol

0 coins

IRS receives copies of all 1099-G forms from state agencies, so they will eventually catch it. Best to file an amended return proactively. The penalties for not reporting are worse than just paying what's owed with some interest.

0 coins

yikes okay yeah probably should deal with that

0 coins

Amended return is the move. IRS is generally reasonable if you come to them before they come to you.

0 coins

Something worth knowing - if you're going to owe federal taxes from UI income and you can't pay the full amount, the IRS has installment plans. You can set one up directly on IRS.gov. Also worth checking if you qualify for any credits that might offset the UI tax liability - earned income credit, child tax credit if applicable, etc. Don't just look at gross income and assume the worst before accounting for credits.

0 coins

Good point, I do have kids so I should factor in child tax credit. That might help offset things significantly.

0 coins

Definitely. Child tax credit can make a huge difference. Make sure you're running a full tax calculation not just looking at the UI income in isolation.

0 coins

IRS payment plans are underrated. Most people don't realize they can just set it up online in minutes if they do end up owing.

0 coins

Had a really confusing situation last year where my 1099-G showed a different amount than what I calculated I received from California EDD. Spent weeks trying to figure out if there was an error. Ultimately had to contact EDD directly to get it sorted. If anyone is dealing with a discrepancy between what they think they received and what's on the 1099-G, do NOT just guess - contact EDD and get clarification before you file. An amended return later is a pain.

0 coins

How did you end up contacting them? Was it through phone or the UI Online messaging?

0 coins

Tried UI Online messaging first, no response after 2 weeks. Eventually got through by phone. Actually used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected - had seen it mentioned somewhere and figured I'd try it. Got through to an agent same day and got the discrepancy resolved. The 1099-G had a small error that EDD corrected.

0 coins

1099-G errors do happen, not super common but not unheard of. Smart to verify if something seems off.

0 coins

can i ask a dumb question - do you file the 1099-G the same way as a W2? like do you just enter the box amounts into whatever tax software you're using?

0 coins

Not dumb at all. Yes, tax software has a dedicated section for 1099-G forms. It's separate from W2 entry. You'll enter the total unemployment compensation from Box 1 and any federal income tax withheld from Box 4. California state taxes withheld would be in Box 11. The software handles everything from there.

0 coins

oh thank you so much that makes way more sense now

0 coins

Both TurboTax and FreeTaxUSA walk you through it pretty intuitively. Just have the form in front of you.

0 coins

Does anyone know if there's any tax credit or deduction specifically for people who were unemployed? Like something that acknowledges you were in a hard situation financially?

0 coins

There isn't a specific 'I was unemployed' deduction, but there are related benefits. If you paid for health insurance out of pocket while unemployed you may be able to deduct premiums. If you received job training or paid for job search expenses in some circumstances there can be deductions. The bigger benefit is just the naturally lower income bracket you end up in.

0 coins

That makes sense. My daughter paid for her own health insurance through Covered California while on UI so maybe that helps.

0 coins

Covered California premiums can be deductible as self-employed health insurance if she had any self-employment income, or as itemized deductions if she itemizes. A tax professional could help maximize that.

i just want to say this thread has been more helpful than anything i found on the official EDD website or IRS website. why is actual human experience so much more useful than official documentation lol

0 coins

Seriously! The official stuff is written for lawyers not regular people trying to understand if they owe money.

0 coins

because official documentation is designed to cover liability not actually help you understand your situation

0 coins

Real experience plus people who've made mistakes and learned from them is invaluable. Official docs can't replicate that.

0 coins

Update for anyone who finds this thread later - I was in a similar situation last year (6 months UI, back to work for 4 months, no withholding on UI). When I filed I ended up getting a $180 federal refund because my total income was low enough that the standard deduction basically wiped out most of my liability and I had some withholding from my new job. So don't assume the worst automatically. Everyone's situation is different but it's not always a disaster.

0 coins

This is really encouraging. Thank you for coming back to share this.

0 coins

Updates like this are so helpful for the next person who finds this thread

0 coins

glad it worked out for you! gives me hope lol

0 coins

One more practical tip - if you're doing your own taxes and feeling uncertain about the UI income, many areas have free tax preparation services through VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. They can help people with straightforward situations including UI income at no charge. Find locations at IRS.gov/VITA. Could be worth it if you want a human to walk through it with you.

0 coins

I actually didn't know VITA existed. That might be really helpful - I'd feel better having someone check my work.

0 coins

VITA is great and way underutilized. Highly recommend for anyone who's uncertain about their tax situation after a year of unemployment.

0 coins

seconding VITA - used them years ago and they were genuinely knowledgeable and patient

0 coins

To circle back and directly answer the original question as comprehensively as I can: Yes you can absolutely get a tax refund even after receiving California EDD unemployment benefits. Whether you do depends on your total income for the year, withholding from any W2 jobs, applicable credits like child tax credit, and your filing status. The 1099-G from EDD is federally taxable but NOT subject to California state income tax. Run a complete tax calculation with all your income sources before drawing any conclusions. Most people in your situation - 7 months UI plus a few months working - find they owe something federally but it's often manageable, especially with credits.

0 coins

Thank you for this summary. I'm going to pull my 1099-G from UI Online tonight and run everything through a tax calculator this weekend. This thread has genuinely calmed me down a lot.

0 coins

Good luck! Come back and let us know how it goes if you want. And remember VITA if you want free in-person help.

0 coins

Good luck!! Hope you end up getting a refund

0 coins

Also worth mentioning - if you have questions specifically about your EDD account, claim status, or anything related to your unemployment record (not tax law questions but EDD-specific stuff), and you can't get answers through UI Online, phone is often the fastest route. But getting through to California EDD by phone can be brutal. If you're stuck in phone purgatory, claimyr.com has been a lifesaver for a lot of people in this community including me. They connect you directly to an EDD agent without you having to redial a hundred times. Video walkthrough is at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 if you want to see how it works before trying it.

0 coins

Good to know for the future. I might need to call about something unrelated to taxes so I'll keep this in mind.

0 coins

anything that helps you actually reach a human at EDD is worth knowing about. that phone system is genuinely one of the most frustrating things I've ever dealt with

0 coins

lol the EDD phone system is notorious. used claimyr once for an adjudication issue and it actually worked
