Where is the unemployment office near me for California EDD in-person help?

So I've been trying to figure out where to actually go in person to deal with my California EDD unemployment situation. My claim has been sitting in adjudication for almost five weeks now and I can't get anyone on the phone no matter how many times I call. I started wondering if maybe I should just show up somewhere in person - like where is the unemployment office near me that handles EDD claims? I live in the greater LA area and honestly I didn't even know if these offices were still doing walk-ins or if you have to make an appointment. Does anyone know how this works now? I've heard some people say the America's Job Center locations can help with EDD stuff but others say they can only do job search assistance and can't actually touch your claim. I just need to talk to a real human being who can tell me why my claim is flagged. I've submitted all my documents through Ask EDD and got zero response. Tried the main EDD phone number like 15 times this week alone. At this point I'm desperate to find any physical location that might be able to give me actual answers about my adjudication issue.

okay so this is actually something i can help with because i went through the exact same thing last year. the short answer is that california EDD does NOT have public walk-in offices anymore where you can just show up and get help with your claim. they basically eliminated that option. what you CAN do is go to an America's Job Center of California (AJCC) location but like you said they mostly do job search stuff. HOWEVER some of them have EDD representatives on certain days. it depends completely on the location.

0 coins

wait seriously? they dont have any offices you can just walk into anymore? that seems insane. so what do people do when they have a real problem with their claim?

0 coins

yeah this changed years ago, EDD moved everything to phone and online. the job centers are your best bet for any in person help

0 coins

your best option honestly is to keep trying the phone line OR look up your specific AJCC location to see if they have EDD staff visiting. some do some dont

0 coins

The America's Job Centers of California are spread across LA county and they're the closest thing to an in-person EDD resource you'll find. Here are a few important things to know: First, they cannot access your specific claim information or override adjudication decisions. Second, some locations do have EDD staff assigned to them on rotating schedules. Third, you should search ajcc.lacounty.gov to find the location nearest you. If you have an adjudication issue though, the phone line is really the only way to resolve it directly with EDD staff who have system access.

0 coins

this is helpful thank you. do you know if i need an appointment for the job center or can i just show up?

0 coins

most of them are walk in but calling ahead never hurts, some get really busy

0 coins

For general services walk-in is usually fine. If you specifically want to speak to an EDD rep at one of those locations I'd definitely call first because they're not always there every day.

0 coins

honestly finding an office in person is kind of a wild goose chase at this point with california EDD. i spent like two weeks trying to find somewhere to go physically and wasted so much time. what actually got my adjudication resolved was using a service called Claimyr. it basically gets you connected to an actual EDD agent on the phone instead of you sitting on hold forever or getting disconnected. i was super skeptical but it worked. their site is claimyr.com and there's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - once i actually talked to an agent my adjudication issue was cleared up in one call because they could see exactly what was flagged.

0 coins

wait this actually works?? i've never heard of this. so it just gets you through to a real EDD agent?

0 coins

yeah that's basically it. instead of you calling and waiting and getting disconnected it handles the hold queue part and alerts you when an agent is available. i was honestly at my wit's end trying to find an in person office and this was way faster than anything else i tried

0 coins

gonna look this up, i've been trying to reach edd for two weeks straight

0 coins

seems too good to be true but at this point ill try anything

0 coins

I want to add some clarity here because there's a difference between EDD offices and AJCC locations. California EDD has a handful of field offices that are technically open but they're NOT for walk-in claim help - they handle specific administrative and hearing functions. The public-facing in-person assistance really does route through the America's Job Centers. If you're in the LA area, search for your nearest AJCC on the EDD website under the 'contact us' section - it lists affiliated job center locations by county.

0 coins

okay so there ARE some physical EDD offices just not for regular claim help. that makes a little more sense. i guess i was picturing like a dmv type situation where you just show up

0 coins

exactly right. think of it less like the DMV and more like the offices only exist for specialized things like unemployment insurance appeals hearings. for regular claim problems like adjudication delays you're really meant to use phone or UI online

0 coins

the appeals hearing thing is a good point - if you ever get to that stage there are actual physical hearing locations which is different

0 coins

can someone explain the difference between adjudication and an appeal because i think i might have the wrong idea about what stage my claim is at. my claim says 'pending' and i got a letter saying something about eligibility determination but i dont know if thats the same as adjudication or if i should be filing an appeal already

0 coins

these are two different things. adjudication is when EDD is investigating an issue with your claim before making a decision - it's like they're reviewing it. an appeal is what you do AFTER EDD makes a decision and you disagree with it. if your claim says pending and they're doing an eligibility determination that's adjudication. you wouldn't appeal yet because there's no decision to appeal

0 coins

ohhhh okay that makes way more sense. so i just have to wait for adjudication to finish before i even know if i need to appeal

0 coins

yes exactly. and keep filing your weekly certifications during adjudication!! a lot of people stop thinking theres no point but those weeks will be paid if you're approved

0 coins

I literally drove to three different locations before someone told me there was no walk-in service for claims anymore. Would have saved me a whole day if I'd known. Now I just try to call early in the morning right when the lines open at 8am. Sometimes I get through sometimes I don't. It's a real mess honestly.

0 coins

ugh that's exactly what i was afraid of. wasting a whole day going somewhere that can't even help

0 coins

yeah don't do it. save your gas money and just keep trying the phone. 8am sharp is when i've had the most luck

0 coins

8am is the move, also apparently Tuesdays and Wednesdays tend to be slightly less busy than Mondays

UPDATE for anyone reading this thread - I actually found that my county has a specific EDD-partnered resource center that DOES have actual EDD staff on Thursdays. I found it by googling my city name plus 'EDD assistance' and a nonprofit workforce development org came up. They have an EDD liaison who comes in weekly. Might be worth trying this approach in your area because it varies so much by county.

0 coins

omg this is actually super helpful. i never thought to look at nonprofit workforce orgs. gonna try searching for this in my area

0 coins

yes! search terms like workforce development center or one-stop career center plus your city. some of them have ongoing partnerships with EDD and have staff who can at least help you navigate the process even if they can't directly access your claim

0 coins

this is a really good tip. the workforce development ecosystem in California is actually pretty robust it's just not well publicized that some of these locations have direct EDD relationships

0 coins

not gonna lie i went down a rabbit hole trying to find where is the unemployment office near me and ended up super confused. the EDD website lists like a main mailing address in Sacramento but obviously you're not gonna drive to Sacramento lol. then it lists phone numbers. then it talks about the job centers. i spent like an hour just on their website trying to find a simple office address and couldn't find one for my city

0 coins

yeah the EDD website is genuinely confusing about this. there's no 'find your local office' feature because frankly there isn't really a network of local offices the way people assume. the closest equivalent is the AJCC locator

0 coins

i wish they just said that clearly instead of making it seem like there might be a local office if you just look hard enough

0 coins

THE WEBSITE IS SO BAD. i had the same experience. nothing is where you expect it to be

0 coins

I want to share something that might save people time. I spent weeks trying to physically locate where to go for my EDD claim issue. Tried AJCC (helpful for job search stuff, couldn't help with my specific claim), tried calling with no luck for days, submitted Ask EDD questions that got generic auto-responses. Finally a friend told me about Claimyr at claimyr.com - there's a video walkthrough at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that explains what it does. Basically instead of you being the one sitting on hold for hours, it navigates the EDD phone system for you and connects you when an agent picks up. Got connected to an EDD agent and the person was able to look at exactly what was holding up my claim in adjudication. Turned out there was a simple employer verification issue that never would have been resolved by me showing up somewhere in person.

0 coins

this keeps coming up in this thread so it must actually work. my adjudication issue is also probably something only an actual EDD agent can fix. might have to try this

0 coins

honestly if your issue is adjudication there's really no substitute for talking directly to an agent. no in person office is going to be able to pull up your claim and see what's flagged the way an actual EDD phone rep can

0 coins

seconding this. the in person stuff is mostly for people who need help understanding how to use UI online or navigate the process. for actual claim issues you need a phone agent

0 coins

something nobody mentioned yet - if you have a state assembly member or state senator in your district, their constituent services offices can sometimes intervene with EDD on your behalf. this is completely free. you just call your local assembly member's office, explain you have an urgent unemployment claim issue, and they have a direct EDD liaison they work with. this got my claim out of adjudication faster than anything else i tried

0 coins

WAIT. this is a thing?? i had no idea elected officials could help with this kind of stuff

0 coins

yes! constituent services is literally one of the main things local elected offices do. google your address plus state assembly member and then call their district office (not the capitol office). explain the situation, they deal with EDD cases regularly

0 coins

can confirm this works. my cousin used her assembly member's office and it was faster than anything else. though Claimyr also worked well for me so i think multiple paths can work depending on your situation

0 coins

im reading this whole thread because i also googled where is the unemployment office near me and ended up here lol. so basically the conclusion is: no real walk in offices, try AJCC for general help, phone is the main route, and some people have had luck with that claimyr thing or going through their assembly member. did i summarize that right

0 coins

pretty much yeah! you got it

0 coins

that's basically the whole thread condensed lol. wish i knew all this before i wasted time looking for an office

0 coins

accurate summary. i'd add: keep filing weekly certifications no matter what, and make sure your UI online account is up to date with current contact info so EDD can reach you if they need to verify something

0 coins

does anyone know if you can bring someone with you to an AJCC appointment? my grandmother has an EDD claim issue and her english isn't great. i want to help her but wasn't sure if they have translation services or if i can just come with her

0 coins

yes you can absolutely bring someone to an AJCC appointment. additionally most locations do have language assistance services - Spanish is almost universally available and many locations have additional languages. call ahead to confirm what languages are available at your specific location. for the EDD phone line there is also a Spanish option and interpreter services for other languages

0 coins

that's such a relief thank you. she's been super stressed about her claim and i just want to help her navigate this

0 coins

the AJCC staff are generally really helpful with situations like this. some also have specific staff who specialize in helping older adults navigate the process

0 coins

okay i have a dumb question but if i go to an AJCC and they cant access my claim, what exactly CAN they help me with? like is it worth going at all

0 coins

not a dumb question at all. AJCC staff can help you: understand letters you've received from EDD and what they mean, help you navigate UI Online and make sure your account is set up correctly, assist with your job search log if you're required to document job search activities, connect you with reemployment services, and sometimes help you prepare for a phone call with EDD so you know what to ask and what information to have ready

0 coins

oh actually that last one is really helpful - helping me prepare for the phone call so i know what to say and have everything ready. that alone might be worth going

0 coins

yes! going in prepared for an EDD phone call makes a huge difference. knowing what documents to reference and what questions to ask means you can get way more done in one call

0 coins

one thing i'll add that's slightly different - if you end up needing a formal unemployment insurance appeal hearing, THOSE do happen at specific physical locations. you'll get a notice with the address. it's run by the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board (CUIAB) not EDD directly. that's the one situation where showing up in person to an official government location is actually required

0 coins

hope i don't get to that stage but good to know. so the appeals board is separate from EDD?

0 coins

yes completely separate agency. EDD makes the initial determination, if you disagree you appeal to CUIAB which is an independent board. the hearings are conducted by administrative law judges

0 coins

this is an important distinction. people sometimes confuse filing a 'request for appeal' with EDD (which is just asking EDD to reconsider) versus a formal appeal to CUIAB. the formal CUIAB appeal has specific deadlines - usually 30 days from the determination date

0 coins

UPDATE: i tried the assembly member tip from earlier in this thread and holy moly it actually works. called my local office, spoke to a constituent services rep, she took down my info and EDD claim number. she said they'd contact their EDD liaison. got a call from EDD two days later. my claim had been in adjudication for six weeks and it got resolved within a week of my assembly member's office getting involved. sharing this because i was skeptical but it genuinely works

0 coins

this is so encouraging to hear!! congrats on getting it resolved. did they explain what the original hold-up was?

0 coins

turned out there was a discrepancy between what my former employer reported and what i reported for my last day of work. the EDD agent who called me was actually really helpful once we connected - she walked me through everything and fixed it on the spot

0 coins

so glad it worked! this is why i always tell people to try the assembly member route. a lot of people don't know it exists and it can cut through months of waiting

0 coins

coming back to add another Claimyr mention because i saw someone earlier in the thread was skeptical - i get it, i was too. but at a certain point when you've been trying to reach EDD for weeks and your bills are piling up you just try things. claimyr.com is legit, the video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 shows exactly what the experience is like. i think the key thing is that actually talking to an EDD phone agent is irreplaceable for claim issues - and anything that gets you to that phone agent faster is worth trying

0 coins

i finally tried this after seeing it mentioned multiple times in this thread. worked for me. talked to an EDD agent yesterday for the first time in three weeks of trying

0 coins

so glad it worked! what was your claim issue if you don't mind sharing?

0 coins

had a job separation issue that needed to be verified. the agent was able to send a form to my former employer directly which i didn't even know was an option. one call fixed what weeks of online submissions couldn't

0 coins

FINAL UPDATE from OP: okay so after reading everything in this thread i ended up doing two things - went to my local AJCC which helped me understand my adjudication letter better and prep for a call, then i used Claimyr to actually get through to an EDD agent. the combination worked. the AJCC visit helped me know exactly what to say and ask, and the Claimyr connection meant i actually got to say it to a real agent. adjudication resolved! my claim is now showing approved and my back weeks of benefits are processing. thank you everyone in this thread seriously you all helped so much. and to anyone googling 'where is the unemployment office near me' - save yourself time and read this whole thread first lol

0 coins

so happy to hear this!! congratulations on getting your claim resolved. and great point that the AJCC prep plus actually connecting to an agent is a powerful combination

0 coins

love a happy ending!! and yes this thread is basically a complete guide now for anyone dealing with this situation

0 coins

congrats!! and thanks for updating us. too many threads end without the OP saying what happened so this is nice to see
