Is the California EDD unemployment office open today?
Quick question that's been driving me crazy - I need to go handle something in person at my local California EDD office and I cannot find a straight answer anywhere on their website about whether they're actually open today. I've been unemployed for about six weeks now and my claim has been sitting in limbo because of an identity verification issue that I apparently have to resolve face-to-face. Every time I try to call the main UI line to ask something as basic as 'are you open today' I either get a busy signal or I'm on hold for over an hour before getting disconnected. Does anyone know the current operating hours for California EDD field offices? Are they doing walk-ins or is everything appointment-only now? I'm in the Sacramento area if that matters but I'd think hours would be consistent across offices.

California EDD field offices are generally open Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm, but they are CLOSED on all state holidays. If today happens to be a state holiday that's probably why you're not getting through. The holiday schedule includes the usual federal ones plus a few California-specific ones like Cesar Chavez Day. Worth checking the CA state holiday calendar real quick before making the drive.

AuthorOh that's actually super helpful, I didn't even think about state holidays. Let me check the calendar.

also worth noting some offices have reduced hours or modified schedules, the website for your specific field office should have the most accurate info

Yes this. I drove 40 minutes to my local EDD office once only to find a sign on the door saying they were closed for a training day. Always call ahead if you can actually get through lol.

For what it's worth, most California EDD field offices transitioned to appointment-preferred after the pandemic. Walk-ins are technically allowed but you can end up waiting hours or getting turned away if they're slammed. You can schedule an appointment through the EDD website under 'Contact Us' - there's an option to find your local office and book a time slot. Especially for something like identity verification, having an appointment basically guarantees they'll actually help you instead of telling you to come back.

AuthorWait really?? I've just been showing up randomly. No wonder it's been so chaotic. How far in advance do you need to book?

Honestly it varies by location. Some offices have slots available within a day or two, others might be a week or two out. The Sacramento area offices tend to be busier so I'd get on it ASAP.

this is correct info, appointment is definitely the way to go for anything involving identity stuff

If your main goal is just to get a quick answer about office hours or your claim status without actually going in person, I'd honestly try Claimyr first before making the trip. It's a service at claimyr.com that basically gets you connected to an actual California EDD phone agent - they handle the hold time nightmare so you're not sitting on the phone for hours. I used it when I had a similar verification question and got through to someone in under 20 minutes instead of my usual 3-hour wait. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 if you want to see how it works before committing. Might save you a wasted trip if it turns out your issue can be resolved by phone.

AuthorI've never heard of this, is it legit? My paranoia is at an all time high after all the EDD scam stuff I've been reading about.

Totally get the skepticism, the EDD scam situation has been wild. But yeah it's legitimate - it just helps you get through to an actual EDD representative by phone, nothing sketchy. The video explains it better than I can.

I used claimyr a few months back for a similar situation. Got through to a real person at EDD after like 15 minutes, they resolved my issue over the phone and I didn't have to go anywhere. Saved me a whole day honestly.

seconding this, claimyr worked for me too when I was dealing with adjudication delays

EDD OFFICES ARE A JOKE. I went THREE TIMES trying to get my identity thing sorted and every single time either the office was closed, the wait was 4 hours, or the person at the desk told me they couldn't help and to call the phone line. THE PHONE LINE THAT NOBODY ANSWERS. It's like they designed the whole system to make you give up. I eventually got it sorted but it took two months and I nearly lost my apartment in the process.

Kyle Wallace
AuthorThis is exactly what I'm afraid of. Two months is terrifying. How did you eventually get it resolved?

Pure persistence and dumb luck honestly. Finally got through to someone on the phone who actually knew what they were doing and they walked me through the whole ID.me verification process. Once that was done everything moved fast.

The ID.me online verification route is actually the fastest if your issue qualifies - you don't need to go in person at all for most identity verification cases now.

Something a lot of people don't realize - the EDD field offices and the phone lines are actually somewhat separate systems. The field office staff can help with some things but for actual claim processing issues, adjudication problems, or payment questions, you almost always need to reach someone on the UI customer service line. Going to the office in person won't necessarily speed up your claim. I'd confirm what exactly needs to be done in person vs what can be handled remotely before making the trip.

AuthorOkay this is really useful context. The notice I got said 'you must appear in person to verify your identity' but maybe there's an online alternative I'm missing?

Sophia Rodriguez
Check your UI Online account first - there might be an option to complete verification through ID.me which is the online identity service EDD uses now. A lot of what used to require in-person visits can now be done digitally.

yes ID.me is the move, i did my whole identity verification from my couch took like 25 minutes

To directly answer your original question about today's hours: the best way to check if your specific office is open on any given day is to go to edd.ca.gov, click 'Contact EDD,' then 'Visit a Local Office,' enter your zip code, and the office page should show current hours and any closure notices. Hours are typically 8am-5pm weekdays but individual offices sometimes post alerts about closures or reduced staffing.

Kyle Wallace
AuthorFinally a direct answer haha thank you. I'll check the site right now.

this is the right answer, the individual office pages do show closures when they remember to update them lol

went to my edd office last week for something similar, showed up at like 9am and there were already 15 people in line ahead of me. ended up waiting 2.5 hours. the staff were nice but clearly overwhelmed. just a heads up for managing expectations if you do end up going in person

Kyle Wallace
Author2.5 hours ugh. Did you have an appointment or were you a walk-in?

walk in, i think appointments get seen faster but idk by how much

appointments definitely get priority in my experience, walk-ins are basically on standby

honestly your best bet for resolving a California EDD identity verification issue without the office runaround is the phone. i know that sounds backwards given how impossible it is to get through but if you can actually reach a live agent they can flag your account, escalate it, and sometimes fix things on the spot that would take weeks through the online system. the trick is knowing when to call - early morning right when lines open (8am) or right after lunch tends to have shorter waits
0 coins
Kyle Wallace
AuthorI've tried calling at 8am and still waited over an hour before disconnecting. Any other tricks?

Lucas Kowalski
tuesday and wednesday mornings tend to be slightly less insane than mondays or fridays in my experience. also hitting redial immediately if you get disconnected rather than starting fresh sometimes gets you back in the queue faster

Jibriel Kohn
Or skip the wait game entirely with Claimyr - claimyr.com handles all that for you. I mentioned it earlier in the thread but seriously if you're burning hours redialing it's worth checking out

one thing nobody mentioned yet - if you're in Sacramento specifically, there are multiple EDD field offices in the metro area (Sacramento, Rancho Cordova, Elk Grove area). might be worth checking which one has the earliest available appointment rather than defaulting to the closest one
0 coins
Kyle Wallace
AuthorOh I didn't know there were multiple options, I've just been going to the one closest to me. Smart.

yeah definitely check a couple locations on the EDD site, the appointment availability can vary a lot between offices even in the same city

I got so frustrated with this exact situation a few months ago that I filed a complaint with my state assemblymember's office. Sounds extreme but honestly their constituent services staff contacted EDD on my behalf and my issue got resolved within a week. Sometimes going around the system is faster than fighting through it
0 coins
Kyle Wallace
AuthorWait that actually works?? I would never have thought to do that.

Olivia Martinez
100% works, it's an underused resource. Just look up your state assembly rep, find the constituent services contact, explain your situation. They deal with EDD issues all the time.

this is genuinely good advice, wish I'd known about this when I was in my two month nightmare

Can confirm this works - congressional offices at the federal level can also help for some benefit issues, but for state EDD specifically the state assembly office is the right call

small tip if you do go in person - bring every document you could possibly need. ID (drivers license, passport if you have it), social security card, any EDD correspondence you've received, your UI Online account info, and proof of your last employment like a pay stub or termination letter. I went once and they asked for something I didn't have and I had to reschedule which added another week to my situation

AuthorMaking a list right now. Thank you, this is exactly the kind of practical stuff I needed.

also bring your phone with your EDD account accessible, they sometimes want to look at your UI Online portal with you

Has anyone else noticed the EDD website is super confusing about distinguishing between what you can do online vs what requires calling vs what requires going in person? I spent like 45 minutes trying to figure out my options before giving up and just going to the office. There should be like a simple flowchart somewhere

The website design is genuinely terrible for navigation, agreed. UI Online is a little better once you're actually in your account but the public-facing site is a mess.

Quick reality check for OP - 'identity verification issue' can mean a few different things in EDD language and not all of them actually require an in-person visit. If your notice says specifically that you need to verify in person at an office, you should comply. But if it just says your identity needs to be verified, that's almost always done through ID.me online now. Worth re-reading the exact language on whatever notice you got.
0 coins
Kyle Wallace
AuthorJust went and looked at the notice again. It says I need to 'verify my identity' but doesn't specifically say I have to go in person. Maybe I assumed that part?

Henry Delgado
Yeah I'd try the ID.me route first then. Way less headache. You'll set up an account at ID.me, connect it to your myEDD account, complete the video verification with them, and that usually satisfies EDD's requirement.

Olivia Kay
ID.me is definitely the first thing to try for identity verification. In-person visits for this are usually only needed if ID.me fails or if there's a more complex issue flagged on the account.

lol the california edd website itself sometimes doesn't load or shows errors when you try to look up office hours. happened to me twice. try the google cached version or just call the general info line if the site is acting up

To summarize the most useful info in this thread for anyone finding it later: California EDD field offices are open Monday-Friday 8am-5pm excluding state holidays. Appointments are strongly preferred over walk-ins. Many issues including identity verification can be handled online through ID.me or by phone rather than in person. If you need to reach EDD by phone and can't get through, services like Claimyr (claimyr.com) can help connect you with a live agent without the hold time - there's a walkthrough at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10. For persistent issues, contacting your state assembly rep's constituent services office is an underutilized but effective option.

One more thing worth knowing - California EDD office closures don't just happen on official holidays. They occasionally close for staff development days, system maintenance periods, or local emergencies. The most reliable way to confirm is calling the office direct number (each field office has its own line listed on the EDD site) rather than the general 1-800 number. The local office line is much easier to get through and staff can confirm same-day hours directly.

Kyle Wallace
AuthorThis is great, I didn't know individual offices had their own numbers separate from the main EDD line.

Ryder Ross
Yep, each office page on edd.ca.gov lists a direct number. Much more useful for logistics questions than the main customer service line which routes to the general call center.

confirmed, called my local office direct number once and got through in like 3 minutes. totally different experience than the main line

If your claim has genuinely been stuck for six weeks due to an identity issue, that's also worth flagging as potentially needing escalation beyond just visiting the office. Six weeks of non-payment while in adjudication/verification hold is significant and you may have grounds to request an escalation review. An EDD phone agent can initiate that - another reason getting through by phone (whether through regular calling or Claimyr) is worth prioritizing alongside the in-person option.
0 coins
Kyle Wallace
AuthorSix weeks and counting and I've just been waiting patiently thinking this is normal. Maybe I need to be more aggressive about escalating.
0 coins
Olivia Kay
Identity verification holds shouldn't typically last more than 2-3 weeks. Six weeks suggests something else might also need attention. Definitely push for escalation when you connect with someone.

Sophia Rodriguez
Agreed - also check your UI Online account inbox for any additional notices or requests for information you might have missed. Sometimes there are action items buried in there that aren't prominently flagged.

something else that messed me up when I was figuring out office stuff - the EDD 'field office' for in-person visits is different from the 'America's Job Center of California' offices (formerly WorkSource centers). They're sometimes in the same building or nearby but they serve different functions. If you accidentally go to the job center when you need the EDD office you'll get redirected. Just something to double check when you look up the address.
0 coins
Kyle Wallace
AuthorOh wow I actually didn't know these were different, I definitely might have confused them before. Good to know.
0 coins
Lucas Kowalski
yeah its a common confusion, the job centers are more for employment services and resume help while the EDD field offices handle actual claim stuff

Joshua Hellan
even some google maps results conflate the two, worth confirming with the official EDD site for the actual office address
