What time does California EDD unemployment office close? Hours and best times to call
I know this might sound like a basic question but I genuinely cannot find a straight answer anywhere on the California EDD website. I've been trying to reach someone at the unemployment office about my claim that's been pending for almost two weeks now and I keep getting recordings no matter what time I call. What time does unemployment close? Like is there an actual window where live agents are available or am I just calling at the wrong times every single day? I work a part time gig during the mornings so I usually try calling around noon or 1pm but I never get through. Does it matter what day of the week it is too? Super frustrated and just need to talk to an actual human being about my UI claim.

California EDD phone lines are open Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm Pacific Time. Saturday hours are also available 8am to 5pm for the general unemployment line. So if you're calling at noon you're within the window but that's also peak call volume time. The absolute worst times to call are Monday mornings and right after any state holiday because everyone and their mother is trying to get through at the same time.

AuthorWait Saturday too?? I had no idea they were open on Saturdays. That actually helps a lot since my part time work is only weekday mornings.

yeah saturday is real, called on a saturday last month and got through in like 40 mins which felt like a miracle lol

Just to add to this - the 8am opening time is when the phone lines technically open but the agents don't always pick up right at 8. I've had the best luck calling between 8:05 and 8:20am before the queue fills up completely.

ugh I feel your pain. I spent THREE weeks trying to figure out when to call EDD and could never get a straight answer. their website is genuinely useless for this kind of basic info

AuthorRight?? I searched everywhere and kept getting outdated info from like 2020 which I'm pretty sure the hours have changed since then.

The COVID-era hours were different so a lot of the info floating around online is wrong. Current hours as of 2025 are Mon-Fri 8-5 and Sat 8-5. They extended Saturday service back a while ago and kept it.

Okay so I was in basically the exact same situation - couldn't get through no matter what time I called, tried early morning, tried right before 5pm, tried Saturdays, always either busy signal or being on hold for 2+ hours and then getting disconnected. What finally worked for me was using Claimyr (claimyr.com). It basically holds your place in the EDD phone queue so you don't have to sit there with your phone glued to your ear all day. There's a video that explains it at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - I was skeptical at first but I actually got a callback from an EDD agent and got my claim issue sorted out. Way better than burning through my whole afternoon trying to get through.

AuthorI'll check that out, honestly at this point I'm willing to try anything. Did you have to do anything complicated to set it up?

seconding this, a friend told me about claimyr a while back and it worked for them when nothing else did

How does it work exactly? Do they call EDD for you or do you still have to be available when they get through?

The timing strategy that worked for me: call exactly at 8am on a Wednesday or Thursday. Mondays are chaos, Fridays people are trying to wrap things up and call volume spikes in the afternoon. Wednesday mid-week tends to be the sweet spot. Also make sure you're calling the right number - there are different lines for SDI vs regular UI claims and calling the wrong one wastes everyone's time.

QuantumQuasar
AuthorOh that's a good point about different numbers. I think I might have been calling the wrong line actually. I have a regular UI claim not SDI.

Sofia Morales
The UI number is 1-800-300-5616. That's the main one for regular unemployment claims. Don't call the SDI line if you have a UI issue, they'll just redirect you anyway.

Wednesday morning is legit the best kept secret for EDD calls. I've gotten through multiple times using that strategy. Also avoid the week after a holiday weekend at all costs.

what time does unemployment close is something I googled like 50 times when I was dealing with my claim lol. short answer is 5pm but also that doesn't really matter because getting through before 5pm is basically a separate challenge entirely

QuantumQuasar
AuthorHa exactly, knowing the hours is like step one but actually reaching someone is a whole different problem

Zoe Papanikolaou
This is accurate. Technically they close at 5pm but calls start dropping or going to voicemail well before that as agents wrap up their queues.

I had a two week pending claim like yours and I was losing my mind trying to get information. Nobody tells you this stuff when you first file. The EDD website says to call but then you can't actually get through, it's maddening. What finally happened with mine is I sent a message through the Ask EDD portal AND tried calling and the message actually got a response faster than the phone did. Not always the case but worth trying both simultaneously.

QuantumQuasar
AuthorI didn't even think about the Ask EDD message portal. Does that actually get responses in a reasonable time?

Took about 5 business days for mine. Not instant but at least I didn't have to sit on hold. The responses can be kind of generic though - mine basically said 'your claim is being processed' which told me nothing lol

Ask EDD is hit or miss. Sometimes really helpful response, sometimes total form letter. Depends on what you're asking about I think.

To directly answer your question about hours: California EDD unemployment line closes at 5pm Pacific Time Monday through Saturday. They're closed Sundays and state holidays. But here's the thing - even though they're technically open until 5, if you call after about 4pm there's a decent chance the system will tell you call volume is too high and disconnect you. The system basically manages the queue and will cut people off if it's not realistic for agents to get to them before close. Early morning is genuinely your best bet.

QuantumQuasar
AuthorSo even calling at like 4:45 might be pointless? That's frustrating because I sometimes finish work early and thought I could squeeze in a call then.

Amara Nnamani
Yeah I'd skip the late afternoon calls. 8am-10am is your window really. After 10 the queue starts to fill up and your wait time balloons.

Miguel Silva
Can confirm the 4pm thing. I've had the EDD automated system literally tell me 'we are unable to take your call at this time due to high call volume' and hang up. At 4:15pm. While they were technically still open.

also depends on what exactly you need to talk to them about? like if it's just checking on a claim status you might be able to get that info through UI Online without calling at all. but if you actually need to talk to someone about an issue then yeah you need to call during those Mon-Sat 8-5 hours
0 coins
QuantumQuasar
AuthorMy issue is that my claim shows a pending status but there's no explanation and no to-do items showing in UI Online. So I feel like I need to actually speak with someone to figure out what's happening.

Jamal Wilson
oh yeah that situation you definitely need a live person. the portal won't tell you why it's stuck, only an agent can look into the actual notes on the claim.

Going back to the Claimyr thing mentioned above - I was skeptical because I'd never heard of it but I looked up that video demo and it actually makes sense. Instead of you sitting there redialing over and over it monitors the queue and you get a callback when an agent is available. Used it last week for my adjudication issue and talked to someone within a few hours. Way less stressful than the traditional approach. Site is claimyr.com if anyone wants to check it out

okay this is convincing me to try it. I've been dealing with EDD phone issues for weeks

AuthorOkay I'm definitely trying this. Two weeks of unsuccessful calls is enough for me.

something nobody mentions is that the 8am opening works differently depending on whether you call the toll free 800 number vs the direct lines. I've had better luck right at 8 on the 800 number personally but your experience may vary

Interesting, I've always used the 800-300-5616 and had okay results at 8am. Haven't compared it to other lines.

yeah 1-800-300-5616 is the main one, that's what I use too. just noting that there are other numbers that exist for specific situations and they each have their own queue situation

I work from home now but when I first filed I was going INSANE trying to figure out when to call. Took half days off just to sit on hold. Hours are Mon-Sat 8am-5pm but that means nothing if you're stuck in a two hour hold queue that disconnects you anyway. The system is genuinely broken and I don't say that to be dramatic, it's just not designed to handle the actual call volume they receive.

AuthorYep that's basically what I'm experiencing. Good to know I'm not just doing something wrong.

You're definitely not doing anything wrong. It's a systemic issue. The tips about early morning and Wednesdays are real but even then it's not guaranteed. Persistence and using tools like Claimyr are really the only ways to improve your odds.

Real talk on the timing question: 8:00am sharp on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday gives you the realistic best chance. Have the automated prompts memorized before you call so you're not fumbling through menus and wasting time. Know your claim ID number, SSN last 4, and the specific question you want answered before you're connected. Agents have limited time per call so being prepared helps you get what you need before they move on.

AuthorGreat tip about having everything ready. I've definitely wasted time with agents trying to look things up mid-call.

Memorizing the phone tree is underrated advice. Once you know which numbers to press to route yourself correctly you save a solid 3-5 minutes which matters when you're worried about getting cut off.

does anyone know if EDD has different hours during like December holidays? Asking for a friend who just filed and is trying to plan when to call
0 coins
Amara Nnamani
Yes, EDD is closed on official California state holidays. That includes things like Christmas, New Year's, Thanksgiving, etc. Always check the state holiday calendar before planning a call because a closed day followed by a reopening means absolutely brutal call volume the next business day.

Zoe Papanikolaou
And the day after a holiday closure is genuinely the worst day to call. If the holiday is on a Monday, definitely wait until Wednesday of that week at minimum.

The Saturday thing is underutilized by most people. Everyone assumes government offices are closed weekends so the Saturday queue is noticeably lighter than weekday queues in my experience. If you can call Saturday morning around 8-9am you have a reasonable shot at getting through without a multi-hour wait.

wait im confused, is it 5pm pacific or 5pm whatever time zone you're in? I'm in california so I guess it's all the same but just wondering for anyone not in the state

All EDD operations are Pacific Time since it's a California state agency. So yes, 8am-5pm Pacific. If somehow someone outside California was dealing with a California UI claim they'd need to account for the time difference.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this but the EDD also has a callback feature sometimes when hold times are very long. You can request a callback instead of waiting on hold. It doesn't always appear as an option but when it does it's way better than sitting there. You basically stay on the call long enough to request the callback and then hang up and wait for them to call you back when you're next in queue.
0 coins
QuantumQuasar
AuthorOh interesting! I've never seen that option come up but I'll watch for it next time.
0 coins
Mei Lin
The callback option is real but inconsistent. Some days it shows up, some days it doesn't. I think they only offer it when they're confident they can actually return the call within a reasonable timeframe.
0 coins
Fatima Al-Suwaidi
The callback feature plus Claimyr kind of do similar things from a user perspective - both mean you're not just sitting there on hold. Good to know both options exist.

To wrap up what this thread has established for OP and anyone else searching: California EDD unemployment closes at 5pm Pacific Time, open Mon-Sat 8am-5pm, closed Sundays and state holidays. Best time to call is early morning 8-10am, best days are Tuesday-Thursday and Saturday mornings. If you're still struggling to get through after trying those times, Claimyr at claimyr.com is worth checking out - the demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 shows how it works. Hope your pending claim gets sorted out soon OP.
