When is the best time to call California EDD unemployment and actually get through?

I've been trying to reach California EDD for the past two weeks straight and I cannot get a single human being on the phone. My UI claim has been sitting in adjudication for almost a month and I have zero explanation why. The automated system either hangs up on me or tells me call volume is too high and disconnects. I work irregular hours now doing gig stuff so I can't just sit on hold all day. Does anyone actually know the best time to call unemployment and get through? Like is there a specific window where the lines aren't completely slammed? I'm at my wit's end here.

Early Tuesday or Wednesday mornings are your best bet. Like 8:01am right when the lines open. Monday is a disaster because everyone who couldn't get through over the weekend is calling in. Friday afternoons are also terrible. I've had the most luck mid-week early morning.

0 coins

Ok so literally the second they open? Do I just keep redialing until I get into the queue or is there a trick to it?

0 coins

Yes redial immediately at 8am. Sometimes I set my phone to auto-redial. The first 15 minutes are your best window before the queue fills up completely.

0 coins

This is accurate. Tuesday 8am has worked for me twice now. Once I got through in under 20 minutes which felt like a miracle lol

0 coins

I've been dealing with California EDD for years (laid off three times in the last decade, not proud of it lol) and honestly the best time to call shifts depending on the season. Right now in 2025 mid-week mornings are the golden window. But also try calling the tier 2 number if your issue is adjudication-related — sometimes that line has shorter hold times than the main 1-800 number.

0 coins

Wait there's a tier 2 number? I've only been calling the main line this whole time. Can you DM me that info?

0 coins

It's actually on the EDD website under contact options. Look for the 'UI Customer Service' section. The number routes differently depending on your issue type.

0 coins

tier 2 is real but its not always faster in my experience. still worth trying though

Honestly after spending WEEKS trying to figure out the best time to call unemployment I finally just used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it was such a relief. They basically hold your place in the California EDD phone queue and call you when an agent is ready. I was skeptical at first but I needed to resolve an adjudication issue and couldn't afford to keep missing calls or getting disconnected. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that shows how it works if you want to see before trying it. Saved me so much stress.

0 coins

I've never heard of this. Does it actually work for adjudication stuff specifically or just general questions?

0 coins

Worked for my adjudication situation, yes. I got connected to an actual EDD agent who was able to see my claim notes and tell me exactly what was holding things up.

0 coins

is this legit? sounds too good to be true honestly

0 coins

100% legit. The demo video explains the whole thing. I was skeptical too but it worked and I didn't have to sit on hold for hours.

THE PHONE SYSTEM IS BROKEN AND NO TIME IS A GOOD TIME. Sorry for yelling but I have called at 8am, 9am, noon, 3pm, every single day for three weeks and I get the same recorded message every single time. California EDD doesn't want you to talk to a real person, that's the truth. The whole point of the system is to make it so difficult that people give up on their claims.

0 coins

I feel this so deeply. I gave up twice and lost benefits I was entitled to because I couldn't get through. The system is absolutely designed to exhaust you.

0 coins

I understand the frustration but there are real agents you can reach — it's just incredibly difficult. Mid-week mornings and the tier 2 line do work sometimes, and tools like Claimyr at claimyr.com have helped people bypass the hold time nightmare.

0 coins

maybe ill try that claimyr thing. at this point i have nothing to lose

0 coins

lol just call at 8am it's not that deep

0 coins

I've tried 8am every day this week and still get the high call volume message 😭

0 coins

oh weird it always works for me. maybe try wednesday specifically

0 coins

Wednesday 8am is genuinely the move. I have no idea why but it feels like fewer people call mid-week

0 coins

Here's what I know from actually getting through multiple times this year. California EDD phone lines open at 8am Monday through Friday. The absolute best windows based on my experience are: Tuesday and Wednesday between 8:00-8:20am, and Thursday around 10:30am when some of the early morning rush has cleared but the lunch crowd hasn't started yet. Avoid Mondays entirely, and avoid Friday afternoons. Also avoid the day after any major holiday because everyone who couldn't call on the holiday calls in the next morning. If your issue is adjudication specifically, you'll want to be prepared to explain your situation clearly because the first agent may try to transfer you to a specialist.

0 coins

This is super helpful, thank you. What do I actually say when I get through? Like do I just tell them my claim ID and explain the adjudication hold?

0 coins

Yes — have your Social Security number, claim ID from UI Online, and the date you filed ready. Tell them your claim shows adjudication in progress and you haven't received any notices or requests for information explaining the hold. Ask them to check for any pending issues or flags on your account.

0 coins

this is the right answer. being prepared before they pick up is huge because the agents sometimes get impatient if you're fumbling around

0 coins

ok so i accidentally figured out something. i was calling the main edd number and getting nowhere for days. then i called by mistake at like 10:45am on a thursday and got through in like 12 minutes. i think it might be because people take their coffee breaks or whatever and theres a small gap. happened twice now so maybe its not a coincidence??

0 coins

The mid-morning gap is real. I've noticed it too around 10:30-11am. Something happens with the queue around that time.

0 coins

Adding Thursday 10:45am to my list of things to try. Willing to test every possible time at this point.

0 coins

good luck! hope your adjudication gets cleared up fast

I spent literally 6 hours across 3 days trying to figure out the best time to call unemployment for my California EDD weekly claim issue. I tried every tip I found online. Eventually my coworker told me about Claimyr and I'm not exaggerating when I say it changed everything. You can check it out at claimyr.com — they get you into the EDD phone queue without you having to sit there hitting redial for hours. Watch the video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 first so you know what you're getting into. My standby status question got answered within the same day I used the service.

0 coins

Two people have mentioned this now so maybe I need to look into it. My adjudication has been pending for 5 weeks and I'm desperate.

0 coins

Five weeks is a long time. Definitely look into it — the video demo explains everything clearly. Getting an actual agent on the line who could see my claim details was the only thing that moved my issue forward.

0 coins

I watched the demo video and I think I'm going to try this. The idea of not having to play phone roulette every morning sounds amazing.

0 coins

not gonna lie i gave up calling and just sent a message through UI Online instead. took 3 weeks to get a response but at least i didn't have to deal with the phone system

0 coins

3 weeks is a long time though. Did the response actually resolve your issue or did they just send a generic reply?

0 coins

they sent kind of a generic reply at first but it did give me a reference number so i used that when i called and it seemed to help move things along

0 coins

UI Online messages are good for documentation but for adjudication holds you really do need to speak with an agent. The written responses often can't resolve the underlying flag on your claim.

0 coins

Does anyone know if calling the 800 number vs the local office makes a difference? I heard local EDD offices sometimes have separate lines

0 coins

Local EDD offices don't typically handle UI phone calls anymore — they're mostly for in-person services and their lines generally route back to the same call center system. The main 1-800-300-5616 number is really your best bet for UI claim issues.

0 coins

ugh okay. so there's really no shortcut to the local office anymore?

0 coins

Not really for unemployment claims. For disability or SDI it's different but for regular UI you're going through the main system regardless.

0 coins

Something nobody mentions: your hold position is not saved if you get disconnected. So when you finally do get into the queue after calling a hundred times, make sure you're somewhere with good signal and don't let your phone battery die. I lost my place after a 45 minute hold because my phone went to 1% and I panicked. One of the most demoralizing experiences of my adult life.

0 coins

this happened to me and i actually cried. spent all morning getting through and then lost the call

0 coins

Noted. I'm going to have my phone plugged in and sitting somewhere with full bars when I try tomorrow morning.

0 coins

AND THEY WONT CALL YOU BACK. You just lose it and start over from zero. This is what I mean about the system being designed to make you give up.

0 coins

Yeah the no-callback thing is brutal. That's honestly one of the main reasons I'd consider using something like Claimyr because at least the callback model means you don't lose your spot if something goes wrong on your end.

0 coins

One thing worth knowing: California EDD has different departments and the hold times vary by which queue you get into. If you say 'agent' or press 1 right at the start you might end up in a general queue. But if you navigate through more options and pick the specific issue type, you might land in a shorter specialized queue. I've had faster results going through the full phone menu rather than just pressing 0 to get an operator.

0 coins

I've always just mashed 0 hoping for a human. I'll try actually going through the menu tomorrow.

0 coins

Yeah the full menu navigation can route you better. For adjudication specifically there's usually a more direct path if you follow the prompts for 'claim status' or 'pending issues.

0 coins

im reading all this and honestly its making me more stressed not less. my claim has been in adjudication for 5 weeks, i called the main number every single morning this week at 8am and got the high volume message every time. i dont know what im supposed to do. i have bills due and california edd just seems like a black hole

0 coins

Five weeks without explanation is genuinely a problem and you should try to escalate. A few options: use UI Online to send a written message asking for status and documenting the issue, contact your state Assembly member's office (they have constituent services staff who can sometimes intervene with EDD directly), and try mid-week mornings as early as 8am. Don't give up.

0 coins

Also look into Claimyr at claimyr.com — I know I mentioned it earlier but for a 5 week adjudication situation getting an actual human on the phone who can check your claim notes is probably the fastest path forward. The video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 shows how it works.

0 coins

I'm going to try the Assembly member thing actually. I didn't know that was an option. Thank you.

0 coins

Something small that helped me: when you do get through, write down the agent's ID number or name and the date and time you called. If they tell you something was fixed or a hold was removed, having that documentation is useful if the issue comes back or if you need to reference the call later.

0 coins

Oh that's smart. I wouldn't have thought to do that.

0 coins

This is actually really important advice. Always document your EDD interactions — date, time, agent ID or name, and a summary of what was discussed. It protects you if there's ever a discrepancy later.

0 coins

I got through on a Wednesday at 8:03am after trying for two weeks. The call took 52 minutes of hold but I finally talked to someone. My adjudication was held up because there was a discrepancy in my employer's wage report and I never would have known without speaking to an agent. So if you're in adjudication with no explanation it really is worth pushing to get through.

0 coins

This gives me hope. How long did it take to resolve after the agent identified the issue?

0 coins

About 10 more days. The agent submitted a correction request and told me to check UI Online in 7-10 business days, and it was actually approved within 9 days.

0 coins

Wage report discrepancy is really common and it's something that just requires a human to look at it and flag for correction. Glad it worked out.

0 coins

To answer OP's original question more directly: the best time to call California EDD unemployment is Tuesday or Wednesday between 8:00-8:30am, with Thursday mid-morning around 10:30am as a backup window. But honestly the phone system is so unreliable that even the best times don't guarantee you'll get through. For adjudication issues specifically, using a service like Claimyr is worth considering because it takes the guesswork out of the timing entirely.

0 coins

Thanks for summarizing. I'm going to try Wednesday 8am tomorrow and if that doesn't work by the end of the week I'll try Claimyr.

0 coins

Good luck! Hope your adjudication gets resolved quickly. Make sure you have all your claim info ready before the call so you can make the most of it when you do get through.

0 coins

update: I tried the Wednesday 8am thing that everyone suggested and GOT THROUGH after like 25 minutes on hold. My claim had a flag from a former employer disputing my separation reason. I never got any notice about this. The agent submitted my response right on the call. Still waiting for final decision but at least I KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENING NOW

0 coins

This is so good to hear. The employer dispute thing is exactly what I'm scared might be happening with mine too.

0 coins

Employer disputes are really common and so frustrating because sometimes EDD doesn't notify you properly. Glad you got through and got some answers.

0 coins

honestly i feel like a different person just knowing the reason. the uncertainty was the worst part

0 coins

For anyone finding this thread later: the best times to call California EDD for unemployment in 2025 based on community experience are Tuesday/Wednesday 8:00-8:20am and Thursday around 10:30-11am. Avoid Mondays, Friday afternoons, and the day after holidays. Have your SSN, claim ID from UI Online, and a clear description of your issue ready before the call. For adjudication holds, ask the agent specifically to check for any employer disputes, pending verification flags, or open issues on your claim file.

0 coins

Saving this comment. Thank you for putting it all together in one place.

0 coins

this should be pinned honestly

0 coins

Update from me: tried Wednesday 8am, got through on the second attempt at 8:07am. Had a 35 min hold but spoke to an agent. Turns out my identity verification from when I filed never fully processed. They flagged it for manual review. Should be cleared in 5-7 business days. FIVE WEEKS of wondering and it was a verification glitch the whole time.
