What time does the unemployment office open - California EDD phone hours explained

So I've been trying to figure out when exactly to call California EDD because I keep missing them or getting the 'high call volume' message no matter when I try. My claim has been sitting in adjudication for almost two weeks now and I really need to talk to someone. I work part time in the mornings so my window to call is limited. Does anyone know what time the unemployment office opens and what the actual best time is to get through? I've tried 8am, I've tried 10am, I've tried right after lunch - nothing works. Really starting to stress about this.

California EDD phone lines officially open at 8:00 AM Pacific Time, Monday through Friday. The main UI customer service number is 1-800-300-5616. They're also open Saturday from 8 AM to 12 PM noon which a lot of people don't know about. That Saturday window is honestly worth trying if you keep striking out during the week.

0 coins

Wait they're open Saturdays?? I had no idea. Does the Saturday line have shorter wait times usually?

0 coins

saturday morning is way less crowded in my experience, got through in like 20 mins last time

0 coins

The Saturday hours are specifically for the main UI line. Specialty units like the disability or appeals offices typically only operate Monday through Friday so make sure you're calling the right department for your adjudication issue.

0 coins

Knowing when the unemployment office opens is only half the battle honestly. Even if you call right at 8 AM the queue fills up SO fast. I spent three weeks trying to get through for my own adjudication issue and never once got a live person. The automated system would just say try again and hang up on me.

0 coins

Ugh this is exactly what keeps happening to me. It's so discouraging. Did you ever actually get through?

0 coins

Yeah finally but it took forever. Keep reading the thread, there's some good suggestions below.

0 coins

Something that genuinely helped me when my claim was stuck was using Claimyr - it's a service that basically holds your place in the California EDD phone queue so you don't have to sit there redialing all day. You can check it out at claimyr.com and there's a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - I was skeptical at first but I got a callback from an actual EDD agent within a few hours. Way better than staring at my phone from 8 AM hoping to get lucky.

0 coins

This sounds interesting. Does it actually work for adjudication issues or just general questions?

0 coins

Worked for my adjudication situation specifically. The agent I spoke to was able to pull up my claim and tell me exactly what was causing the hold. Saved me weeks of waiting.

0 coins

ive heard of this but was nervous to try it. glad its working for people

0 coins

Going to look into this. Been trying to reach someone about my claim for 3 weeks and I'm losing my mind.

0 coins

The BEST time to call California EDD in my experience is literally right when they open at 8:00 AM. Like have the number dialed and your finger on the call button. The queue fills within the first few minutes. If you miss that window your odds drop off a cliff for the rest of the morning.

0 coins

does it matter which day of the week? like is monday worse than wednesday?

0 coins

Monday is usually the worst because everyone who tried over the weekend calls in. Wednesday and Thursday mornings tend to be slightly better in my experience but honestly any day right at 8 is your best shot.

0 coins

This is really helpful, I've been calling around 9-10 which is probably too late

0 coins

ok wait i'm confused - is the 'unemployment office' a physical place you can walk into or is it all phone/online now? because i thought they closed all the physical offices

0 coins

Great question - California EDD doesn't really have walk-in offices for regular UI claims anymore. Everything is handled through UI Online, phone, or mail. There are America's Job Center of California (AJCC) locations around the state but those are for job search assistance and employment services, not for resolving claim issues directly.

0 coins

oh ok that makes sense. so 'unemployment office open' basically just means when the phone lines start taking calls

0 coins

Exactly right. When people ask what time the unemployment office opens they really mean the call center hours. 8 AM weekdays, 8 AM to noon on Saturdays for the main line.

0 coins

I called at EXACTLY 8:00 AM three days in a row and still couldn't get through. The system said high call volume and disconnected me before I even got in queue. So even knowing when the unemployment office opens doesn't guarantee anything lol

0 coins

this happened to me too. some days its just impossible no matter when you call

0 coins

This is honestly why I ended up using Claimyr - claimyr.com - because even doing everything 'right' like calling exactly when they open sometimes just doesn't work. The demand is way higher than the capacity.

0 coins

yeah I ended up going the Claimyr route too after reading this thread actually. got through same day

0 coins

Can someone clarify something - I keep seeing people say to call 1-800-300-5616 but there's also another number on my UI Online account page. Which number actually gets you to a live person faster for adjudication issues?

0 coins

The 1-800-300-5616 is the main UI customer service line and is your best bet for general claim issues including adjudication holds. Some specialty queues exist for things like SDI or PFL but for regular unemployment you want the main number. The number on your UI Online account might be a regional or specialty line.

0 coins

Thank you! I was worried I'd been calling the wrong number this whole time.

0 coins

Also when you call, have your Social Security number, claim ID, and recent weekly claim info ready. Agents can help you faster when you're prepared to verify your identity quickly.

0 coins

my cousin works at a call center (not EDD but similar) and she told me that the agents who answer government lines are usually more stressed on Mondays and Fridays - Mondays because of backlog and Fridays because everyone is rushing. She said mid-week callers tend to get more patient agents who take more time to actually help. Not sure if EDD specifically is like this but it kinda makes sense

0 coins

That's actually interesting. I did notice the one time I got through on a Thursday the agent seemed really calm and thorough compared to a rushed Monday call I had once

0 coins

I'm going to try Wednesday morning right at 8 AM and see what happens

0 coins

WHAT NOBODY TELLS YOU: the automated system keeps records of how many times you've called. I read somewhere that repeated callers sometimes get deprioritized. Can anyone confirm or deny this?? Because if true thats absolutely infuriating

0 coins

I haven't seen any official documentation supporting that claim. California EDD's queue system is generally first-come first-served based on call time. What CAN affect your experience is calling into a line that doesn't handle your specific claim type - you might get transferred multiple times which wastes everyone's time.

0 coins

ok good because i've called probably 40 times trying to sort out my adjudication situation

0 coins

40 times is honestly not even that much for some of us lol. the system is just broken

0 coins

Thread is super helpful. Quick add - if you're calling about a specific issue like adjudication, when you get into the automated menu DON'T just mash 0 to skip to an operator. Go through the menu options and select the one that matches your actual issue. Callers who navigate to the correct department queue reportedly get through faster than those who try to skip the whole menu.

0 coins

Wait really? I've been pressing 0 every single time thinking it's faster

0 coins

Pressing 0 puts you in a general overflow queue which tends to be massive. The specific department queues are smaller. At least that's been my experience.

0 coins

This is actually solid advice. I started doing this and my wait times improved noticeably.

0 coins

gonna try this tomorrow morning

0 coins

Just want to add for anyone reading this later - the California EDD also has a chat option on UI Online for some basic questions. It's not perfect and you can't resolve adjudication issues through it but it can answer simple questions about claim status or tell you what documents you might need. Might save you a phone call if your question is straightforward.

0 coins

I didn't know there was a chat option. I'll check that out for basic status stuff

0 coins

Just log into your UI Online account and look for the help or contact options. It's limited but faster than sitting on hold for basic stuff.

0 coins

Okay I want to share my full experience because it might help people. My claim went into adjudication right after I filed. I tried calling for literally three weeks - called right when the unemployment office opens at 8 AM, tried midday, tried Saturdays. Got through exactly once and the agent couldn't help me and transferred me to a different department and the call dropped. Finally someone in another forum mentioned Claimyr and I figured what the heck. Used it at claimyr.com and actually watched the demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 first so I knew what to expect. Got a callback that afternoon. The agent pulled up my file, found a documentation issue I didn't even know about, and it was resolved within a week. Actual three week nightmare solved in one afternoon.

0 coins

This is so encouraging. Three weeks in adjudication with no answers sounds exactly like my situation. I'm going to try Claimyr today.

0 coins

did they ask you for a lot of personal info to use the service?

0 coins

It was pretty simple to set up, nothing crazy. Just focused on getting you in the queue.

0 coins

Saving this comment. My adjudication has been going on for almost 4 weeks now.

0 coins

random question - do the California EDD phone lines actually close exactly at 5 PM or is there like a grace period if you're already in queue at closing time?

0 coins

If you're already in the queue before closing time you should be able to get through. The system doesn't typically just dump active calls at exactly 5 PM. But if you're NOT in queue by around 4:30-4:45 your odds get really slim because they stop accepting new callers as closing approaches.

0 coins

Good to know, I always thought if I called at 4:58 I was still eligible to get through

0 coins

I've been dealing with California EDD for my third time going through the whole unemployment process (tech industry layoffs keep hitting me lol) and honestly the phone situation has gotten worse every time. First time in 2019 I could get through in under an hour. Now it's basically impossible without strategic planning or a service like Claimyr. The volume of claims versus the staffing just doesn't match up.

0 coins

Three rounds of this sounds exhausting. At least you know the process well by now

0 coins

Knowing the process helps but the calling part never gets less frustrating. If anything I dread it more now because I know what I'm in for

0 coins

This is my first time and the calling situation alone has been so stressful. I can't imagine going through this multiple times

0 coins

Pro tip that took me way too long to figure out: when you call right when the unemployment office opens at 8 AM and hit the automated system, speak your answers instead of pressing numbers. I swear the voice recognition routes faster than touch-tone on some options. No idea why but multiple people in my office who also got laid off said the same thing

0 coins

lol what, I've never heard this but I'll try anything at this point

0 coins

I know it sounds weird but try it once. Maybe placebo but it felt faster

0 coins

I've heard this rumor too. Never been able to confirm it but the voice commands do seem to route you through the menus faster in my experience

0 coins

Does anyone know if there's a difference between calling the main 800 number and the local California EDD office number? Like would a Fresno-based claimant do better calling a Fresno-specific line vs the general 1-800-300-5616?

0 coins

For regular UI claims, local office numbers typically redirect to the same centralized call center as the 800 number. California EDD centralized their UI call handling. Local offices primarily serve job seekers through AJCC-type services rather than handling active unemployment claims directly. Stick to the main 1-800-300-5616 for claim issues.

0 coins

That's what I suspected but wanted to confirm. Thanks for the clear answer.

0 coins

Yep confirmed this myself after calling my 'local' number and getting routed to the same hold music as always

0 coins

Update for OP and anyone else following: I was in a similar situation (adjudication hold, couldn't get through by phone, freaking out about bills). What finally worked was being super persistent about calling exactly when the phone lines open - 8:00 AM sharp - AND having all my documentation ready to go so I didn't waste any of the agent's time once I got through. Took 4 days of early morning attempts but I did eventually get through without any third-party service. Just want people to know the direct method IS still possible, just requires patience.

0 coins

Thank you for sharing this! Good to know there are multiple paths that work. How long was the adjudication hold before you got it resolved?

0 coins

Total was about 3.5 weeks including the time I spent trying to call. Once I actually talked to someone it moved quickly.

0 coins

Glad it worked out for you! I think the Claimyr route and the persistent early-calling route are both valid depending on how urgent your situation is and how flexible your schedule is for calling right when the unemployment office opens every day.

0 coins

Something I want to flag that messed me up - there are apparently some scam numbers out there that show up in search results pretending to be California EDD. Always verify you're calling 1-800-300-5616 from the official edd.ca.gov website. I almost called a sketchy number I found through a random website once. Be careful everyone.

0 coins

Really important warning. The only official California EDD UI number is 1-800-300-5616. If you found a number somewhere else always cross-reference with edd.ca.gov to confirm.

0 coins

Yikes, I hadn't even thought about that. I'll double-check the number I have saved.

0 coins

this is why the internet is dangerous, scammers targeting vulnerable unemployed people is so low

UPDATE FROM OP: Okay so I tried a few things from this thread. Attempted 8 AM sharp on Wednesday - got the high call volume message again. Then I used Claimyr after seeing so many recommendations in this thread. Got a callback about 3 hours later, talked to an actual California EDD agent for the first time in two weeks. She explained my adjudication was flagged because my employer had disputed part of my separation reason, which I had no idea about. Now I know what I'm dealing with and she explained the next steps. Not fully resolved yet but I finally have actual information after all this time. Will update when the adjudication closes.

0 coins

So glad you got some answers!! The employer dispute situation is really common and totally resolvable, hang in there.

0 coins

Great update! Employer disputes in adjudication can take a bit to process but at least you know what's happening now. That's half the battle.

0 coins

Really happy for you. The worst part of adjudication is not knowing anything - once you have information you can actually plan.

0 coins

For anyone reading this later: employer disputes during adjudication are handled through a fact-finding process where California EDD reviews both sides. You may be asked to provide additional documentation about your separation. Make sure you respond to any EDD communications quickly to avoid further delays.
