Can't get through to unemployment - California EDD phone lines impossible to reach

I've been trying to reach California EDD for going on two weeks now and I genuinely cannot get through to anyone. My situation is a little complicated - I was laid off from my warehouse job about six weeks ago after working there for almost four years. Filed my initial claim right away, did everything online, and for the first two weeks everything seemed fine. Then out of nowhere my weekly claim status changed and now it just shows a generic message that doesn't explain anything. I need to talk to an actual human being at EDD to understand what happened because there's nothing in my UI Online account that gives me any real information. Every time I call the main number I either get a busy signal immediately or I sit on hold for over an hour and then the line just disconnects. I've tried calling right at 8am when they open, I've tried mid-morning, I've tried afternoons - doesn't matter. I cannot get through to unemployment no matter what I try. My rent is due in two weeks and I have no idea what's happening with my claim. Has anyone managed to actually reach a real person at California EDD recently? What am I doing wrong?

ugh I feel this so hard. been calling for 3 days straight and same thing every time, busy signal or dropped after holding forever. its like they dont want us to actually reach them

0 coins

Right?? It feels intentional at this point. There's no way it's this hard by accident.

0 coins

It's not intentional but the call volume California EDD gets is genuinely insane - millions of active claims and a relatively small phone staff. That said there are some strategies that actually help, keep reading the thread.

0 coins

The 8am thing actually HURTS you, not helps. Everyone has the same idea so the lines are absolutely slammed the second they open. Try calling around 10:30-11am on a Tuesday or Wednesday - those are statistically the lower volume windows. Also make sure you're calling the right number for your specific issue. The main claim line is different from the UI customer service line.

0 coins

Wait which number should I be calling? I've just been hitting the main 1-800-300-5616 number this whole time.

0 coins

That's actually the right one for general UI claim questions. For technical issues with UI Online specifically there's a separate line but for claim status questions you've got the right number. Just try the mid-morning window instead of 8am.

0 coins

tuesday and wednesday tip is legit, mondays are brutal because everyone's been stewing over the weekend about their claims

0 coins

I was in almost this exact situation last month - status change with no explanation, couldn't get through to anyone, completely in the dark. What finally worked for me was a service called Claimyr. Basically it holds your place in the EDD phone queue and calls you back when an agent is available so you're not sitting there redialing for hours. Went to claimyr.com, took like two minutes to set up, and I got a callback with an actual EDD agent the same afternoon. There's a video that shows exactly how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - honestly wish I'd known about it before I wasted a week trying to get through on my own.

0 coins

This sounds almost too good to be true honestly. It actually works for California EDD specifically?

0 coins

Yeah I was skeptical too but it's specifically for EDD. The agent I got was able to pull up my claim right there and tell me exactly what the hold was about. Turned out there was a simple eligibility question flagged on my account that I could resolve with one phone call.

0 coins

Bookmarking this. I've been trying to reach EDD for a week and a half about an overpayment notice I don't even understand.

0 coins

ok so when your status changes like that mid-claim there are really only a few things it could be. Either there's a question about your job separation (like did your employer contest the claim), a certification issue where something you reported triggered a review, or an identity verification flag. None of these necessarily mean you're getting denied - they just mean EDD needs more info. The problem is you're 100% right that you need to talk to someone because the online portal will NOT tell you what the specific issue is.

0 coins

My employer definitely knew I was laid off, it was a whole company-wide reduction in force situation. But the employer contesting it - is that something they can do after the fact? Like weeks after I filed?

0 coins

Yes unfortunately employers have a window to respond to UI claims and they sometimes submit their response late. If they contest, it goes to adjudication which is basically a review process. Doesn't mean you lose - it just means EDD has to look at both sides. But again you really need to talk to an agent to find out if that's what's actually happening.

0 coins

adjudication is the WORST. mine took 7 weeks and I nearly lost my apartment. the system is completely broken

0 coins

Adding some practical info here since I went through adjudication last year. If your claim is in adjudication due to an employer response, here's what the process generally looks like: EDD reviews the separation details from both you and your employer, may send you a questionnaire to fill out (check your UI Online inbox AND your physical mail), and then an interviewer may call you - sometimes with very little advance notice. The key thing is to not miss any of those calls or questionnaires because non-response can result in a denial by default. So even while you're trying to reach EDD proactively, make sure you're watching for incoming contact from them too.

0 coins

I haven't gotten any questionnaire or anything but I'll definitely watch for it. Does it come through the UI Online message center or actual mail?

0 coins

Both potentially - EDD has been inconsistent about this. Check your UI Online inbox under the messages tab, AND watch your physical mail. Some people only got physical mail, some only got the online notice. Don't assume one channel means the other is fine too.

0 coins

this is really good to know, I didn't realize they could call out of nowhere like that

0 coins

The questionnaire thing is huge - I missed one because it went to my spam folder in my UI Online messages and it caused a massive delay. Check everything.

0 coins

I GIVE UP trying to call california edd. been at it for TWO WEEKS. the hold music plays for 45 minutes then CLICK. gone. called back, another 40 minute hold, CLICK. this is not okay when people are trying to pay rent and buy groceries. the whole system needs to be completely rebuilt from scratch

0 coins

Same energy. It's genuinely cruel to design a system this way for people who are already stressed about money.

0 coins

Have you tried Claimyr? Seriously not trying to be a broken record but it got me through when nothing else worked - claimyr.com. For people who literally cannot get through any other way it's a game changer.

0 coins

at this point ill try literally anything. going to check it out

0 coins

something nobody mentions - if you have an eDD account you can also try the Ask EDD online question system. it's not great for urgent stuff but for some issues you can get a response in a few days and it creates a paper trail which can actually help if things escalate to an appeal later

0 coins

I did submit an Ask EDD question actually but it's been 5 days and still says 'in review.' Is that normal?

0 coins

Yeah unfortunately Ask EDD response times have been really inconsistent - sometimes 3 days, sometimes 2 weeks. It's better than nothing for documentation but definitely keep trying to call too.

0 coins

The paper trail aspect is underrated advice. If this ever goes to a hearing, having documented records of your attempts to resolve the issue shows good faith.

0 coins

not sure if this helps but I found that calling the number and immediately pressing 1 for english then following a specific menu path got me into a shorter queue. like don't just wait at the main menu, navigate to the most specific submenu for your issue. the agent pools are apparently separate for different issue types

0 coins

What menu path do you use? I usually just hit whatever seems closest and then hold.

0 coins

for claim status questions I do: 1 (language), then 2 (existing claim), then 1 (claim status) - that sequence seemed to route me to a shorter queue than the general line. not guaranteed but worked for me twice

0 coins

I tried every menu path combination over three days and still got disconnected every single time. Some people have luck with this some don't

0 coins

Did you continue filing your weekly certifications even while you're waiting to resolve this? Because if there's a hold on your claim you still need to keep certifying every week or you could lose those weeks entirely even if the underlying issue gets resolved.

0 coins

Yes I've been filing every week even though it shows pending. Is that definitely the right thing to do?

0 coins

100% keep filing. If the hold gets resolved you'll be paid for all the certified weeks in a lump sum. If you stop certifying you may lose those weeks permanently even after the issue is fixed.

0 coins

This is correct and really important. Never stop certifying while an issue is being resolved. EDD can pay out back weeks but only for weeks that were actually certified.

0 coins

can i ask a dumb question - when they say adjudication does that automatically mean a denial is coming or can you still get approved after adjudication? I'm in a similar situation and I'm freaking out

0 coins

Not a dumb question at all - adjudication does NOT mean denial. It just means there's a question that needs to be resolved before they can approve payment. Many claims come out of adjudication approved. The outcome depends on the specific issue being reviewed.

0 coins

Okay that's actually really reassuring, thank you. I've been assuming the worst.

0 coins

To add to that - the majority of adjudication cases where the claimant responds to any questionnaires and participates in any phone interview do result in approval. The cases that get denied are often ones where the claimant didn't respond to EDD's outreach, not necessarily because the underlying facts were against them.

0 coins

UPDATE: So I finally tried Claimyr after seeing it mentioned here and I got a callback from an actual California EDD agent this afternoon. Turns out my employer did submit a late response questioning the layoff (even though it was literally a company-wide RIF) and my claim is in adjudication. The agent told me what to expect next and confirmed I should keep certifying weekly. Just knowing what's actually happening is such a relief after two weeks of not knowing. Still not out of the woods but at least I'm not completely in the dark anymore.

0 coins

So glad it worked out! And yeah just knowing the actual status is such a mental relief even when the situation isn't fully resolved yet.

0 coins

This gives me hope. I'm going to try this for my situation too.

0 coins

Okay going to Claimyr right now, just decided. Can't keep doing the redial loop.

0 coins

glad you got some answers!! fingers crossed the adjudication goes your way, RIF layoffs should be pretty clear cut for approval

0 coins

Since your employer is contesting even though it was a RIF - document EVERYTHING. Any emails about the layoff, any severance paperwork, any company-wide announcements. When EDD contacts you for the adjudication interview having all of that ready makes a huge difference. Companies sometimes contest claims hoping people won't fight back.

0 coins

I have the official layoff letter and a company-wide email that went out the same day. Is that enough or do I need more?

0 coins

That's actually really solid evidence. The official letter especially. Keep them somewhere you can access quickly because the interview notice can come with only a few days warning.

0 coins

Also write down your own account of events while it's fresh - dates, what was said, the circumstances. Not for EDD necessarily but for your own reference so you don't forget details during a phone interview when nerves kick in.

0 coins

For anyone else reading this who can't get through to EDD - the Claimyr option (claimyr.com) is legitimate, and there's also the option of contacting your state assembly member's office. Every California Assembly member has a constituent services staff member who can sometimes make inquiries to EDD on your behalf. It's slower but another avenue if you're completely stuck.

0 coins

The assembly member thing is real and underused. Had a friend who waited 8 weeks for EDD to respond to anything and the assembly office got them a response within a week.

0 coins

I didn't know that was a thing. Is it weird to call your assembly member about unemployment?

0 coins

Not at all - constituent services is literally what they're there for. Just look up your California Assembly district, call the district office, explain you're a constituent with an urgent EDD issue, and ask to speak with whoever handles constituent services.

0 coins

something that stresses me out - if EDD calls you for the adjudication interview and you miss it, what happens? like what if you're at a job interview or something

0 coins

If you miss the EDD adjudication call you need to call back as soon as possible and explain. There's usually a process to reschedule but it can add weeks to your timeline. This is another reason having your phone available and checking your UI Online messages frequently is so important during an open adjudication.

0 coins

ugh that's stressful. so basically I have to be available at all times potentially

0 coins

The notice usually gives a date range for the call rather than an exact time, which honestly makes it harder. Best practice is to just have your phone available and answer any unknown numbers during that window.

0 coins

How long does adjudication usually take right now? I've seen people say anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months and I don't know what to actually expect

0 coins

Currently for straightforward employer-dispute cases it's running roughly 3-6 weeks from when the adjudication starts to when you get a decision. More complex situations can take longer. The 3-month cases are typically ones involving multiple issues or where there was a non-response from the claimant that had to be addressed.

0 coins

3-6 weeks is rough when bills don't stop. Is there any way to request expedited review?

0 coins

You can try but EDD doesn't really have a formal expedited process for adjudication - the financial hardship angle can sometimes move things a little but honestly it's more of a waiting game than anything you can control

0 coins

Some people have had luck explaining genuine financial hardship when they finally get through to an agent - not guaranteed but worth mentioning. Also make sure there's nothing on your end that needs to be submitted because your side of things being complete can prevent additional delays.

0 coins

Random thing I noticed - if you have a smartphone you can sometimes get through faster using the EDD callback option if one appears. Not always available but when it is it beats sitting on hold for an hour and getting dropped

0 coins

The callback option is hit or miss - sometimes it doesn't show up at all and when it does the callback can come at weird hours

0 coins

Yeah I've never seen that option come up in all my calling attempts. Feels like a myth at this point lol

0 coins

Update from me too - I followed up using Claimyr like I mentioned and got through to an EDD agent about my overpayment notice. Turns out it was a data entry issue on EDD's side from a wage cross-match that misread my earnings. The agent submitted a correction and told me not to pay anything until I receive a follow-up notice. Genuinely would not have known any of this without actually speaking to someone.

0 coins

That's such a relief for you! These things are always so much less scary once you actually know what they are.

0 coins

These success stories are making me feel better about my situation. Currently waiting for my Claimyr callback now actually.

0 coins

The overpayment notice thing is so common and so often an EDD data error. Good that you got it sorted before it escalated.

For anyone landing on this thread trying to figure out what to do when they can't get through to unemployment - quick summary of what actually works based on this whole conversation: 1) Keep filing weekly certifications no matter what. 2) Check UI Online messages AND physical mail constantly. 3) Try calling mid-morning Tuesday/Wednesday instead of 8am. 4) Use Ask EDD for a paper trail even if response is slow. 5) Claimyr (claimyr.com) if you need to actually talk to someone and can't get through any other way. 6) Contact your California Assembly member's constituent services as a last resort.

0 coins

This should be pinned honestly. Saving this comment.

0 coins

This entire thread has been incredibly helpful. Thank you everyone. I'll post another update once adjudication is resolved.

0 coins

Good luck OP - RIF layoffs have a solid track record in adjudication when documented. Should be fine.
